Overview

About the property

$375/nt Nov 1-20. Ocean Front Duplex, 2 Bdrm/1 Bath. Exquisite!

Location Location Location! Honu Hale Lanikai's location exactly in front of the Mokulua Islands provides endless hours of outstanding views from both bedrooms as well as the living room, dining room, backyard, side deck and even the upstairs bathroom. Easy access (your own private railed stairway down to the ocean) means you can swim, snorkel, kayak, fish, etc. right from your yard. Your days are filled with the sounds of waves, trade winds blowing through the coconut trees and picturesque sailboats, kayakers and outrigger canoes going by. Lanikai provides a fun and healthy lifestyle in a friendly beach community. It's perfect for families as well as couples wanting a relaxed Hawaiian style home environment away from the busy and crowded resort areas.

Honu Hale Lanikai (Honu means turtle, Hale means house) is a simple and comfortable two bedroom two-bath oceanfront vacation home in beautiful Lanikai. Great for families. And with one of the very best views in Lanikai, as it sits directly in front of the twin Mokulua Islands.

Honu Hale Lanikai has one bedroom and one bath in the lower beach house. Attached is a two-story unit with an upstairs master suite (the "Dolphin Suite") and the ocean front Ohana Room on the lower level. Honu Hale Lanikai can accommodate up to six guests: 2 upstairs in the master suite (King bed), 2 in the downstairs bedroom (Queen Bed), and 2 on the living room futon (Queen).

We are in the process of converting Honu Hale Lanikai to a duplex (Oct 2017) and adding a bedroom downstairs. This means that if you rent now that you will get both units, and an extra (third) bedroom. The conversion is scheduled for completion by November 1.

Mahalo, Mahalo, Mahalo!

We came to this place for the wedding of our daughter, sister, and friend. It was perfect that we were all able to stay together in this beautiful house on the water. This excellent setting with the view of the 2 little islands, with the outriggers, kayakers, boaters and swimmers brought back the memories of the beautiful place that brought us all together, Palau, and that made us all family. ... We so enjoyed our early morning swims with the gorgeous sunrises. The colors from the sunsets were amazing. The stargazing incredible. All the neighbors were so kind and friendly. Most of all we enjoyed our daughter's, sisters's and friend's wedding that was a dream come true for us all. We made so may more beautiful memories here to share with one another and friends when we meet again.

Thank you so very much for the wonderful stay in your beautiful home. We had such a relaxing vacation here. The view is incredible and we loved the privacy! Our kids will never forget this experience, nor will we! Everything was just perfect--couldn't ask for a more accommodating home away from home.

Each day a coconut floats in from 'unknown' islands. Watching crabs (from a safe spot) walk along. Watching many bird or geckos, that's what I did.

Kevin Ross, age 10

Thanks for hosting our vacation! We loved the sunrises, Air Chair (we bought one for back home), hammock and the Internet for researching Luau times, etc. We really liked the upstairs. We loved taking pictures of the 2 islands and playing soccer in the backyard with a beach ball. The geckos were great and swaying palm trees were perfect in our pictures.

We hope to come back soon! The Ross/Wingavaer families

Best View of Paradise

  • 4 of 5

Our family of five thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. It's a nice location with the best view. For sandy beach we walked about four beach accesses down, not a big deal. We launched our kayak from one beach access down and put the paddleboard out right off the back yard stairs. The driveway was spacious and secure. The covered patio was a plus, as well as the perfect back yard. Loved the ocean breeze here on the windward side.

Mahalo John for being very easy to work with.

It has its Pros and Cons

  • 2 of 5

This is a review for those who care about the details and like to know the truth about where they stay, so here goes:

Positives about the property:

- Amazing views, outstanding location, reasonably private

- BBQ is excellent, Washing and Drying machines are excellent

- Wireless Internet speed was great

- Landline phones for upstairs/downstairs intercom worked well

Negatives about the property:

- Hot water levels poor, water pressure poor

- Stairs outside a little rickety, not suitable for those with mobility issues

- Security is non existent almost, you can get into the property both upstairs and downstairs with ease if you really want to, most windows are rotted where they should seal/lock

- There are no smoke alarms, not sure if this is legal or not, but its dangerous

- Vegetable peelers are blunt, buy your own

- Bed linen is polyester, you'll get hot, even with just a sheet (remember there is no air/con, and the ocean breeze takes 3-5 days to acclimatize to. We purchased our own cotton sheets at our expense

- There is no working light above the kitchen table where you eat

- Lamps across building are tricky to turn on and off, hard to explain

- One blind upstairs is broken

- The oven, well lets just say you should avoid using the oven

- The toaster cannot fit a slice of bread in it, expect to trim the bread to make it usable

- Fridge is rusted, lights in kitchen are rusted

- Don't dry clothes on outside chairs, we got some rust on our clothes as a result

- Access to the water down the stairs will be tricky if anyone has mobility issues (we had no issues)

- No-where to hang wet towels and clothes, needs a simple hanging line

- There is no mobile reception when in the house (we tried t-Mobile and AT)

Summary: Very tired looking house, needs some tender loving care, but amazing location.

Thanks.

A Great Cottage in a Wonderful Location

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our entire week+ at Honu Hale -- the house was spacious, clean, comfortable, and just earthy enough to feel like home. Although we never met, John was totally responsive and attentive, fixing a minor plumbing issue on a weekend, and making sure everything was right for us -- which it was. We are already planning our next trip to Lanikai, and this is our first choice for accommodations.

6 relaxing days with kids

  • 4 of 5

The house is well equipped with guide books, towels, barbecue and nice table protected from wind for outside dining. The hammock and swing chair were often occupied and enjoyed.

Enjoyed having a washer and dryer. There were tables and chairs everywhere. The bed and bath accessed by outside stairs worked out well for us as it is a very large room that easily accommodated 2 children sleeping on the floor. View is lovely. There was never any sandy beach in front of the house as some photos showed but a nice beach was ~1/2 mile walk away. We did see a turtle by the sea ladder once. Kitchen does not have dishwasher. Oven is odd, old and unlike any I've ever seen before and we ruined 2 pizzas learning how it worked.

It was very windy the whole time we were there and water is not very clear so snorkeling from Lanikai was not good when we were there (late Feb). Main house could not be secured as window ledges are rotting away, screens are on outside of window and sliders could not be secured. Best to lock valuables in upstairs bedroom.

Special place!!!!

  • 5 of 5

Love this place, very homey and comfortable, many different little hangout areas.

I love that it is kept as a casual beach house, but has all the comforts.

Especially enjoyed the open air family room for dinners.

In the morning the little deck off the kitchen is great for sunrise coffee for the early birds .will love to come back soon!
