'Check out our Video' You can find it if you scroll to the right after the last picture above.

Built in 2010, the Barefoot House is an excellent value for your Sayulita vacation! It has a lovely, quiet location atop Gringo Hill; just an 8 minute walk to the plaza and 2 more minutes to the beach. Sunsets are stunning and the views of 'Monkey Mountain' and the Sayulita jungle are simply gorgeous. With two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a sleeping loft, it is perfect for a family or two couples. It can sleep 4-6.

Barefoot House boasts a large, salt water, solar heated pool with a shallow 'splash zone' for the kiddies. If you're not familiar with salt water pools, they are a luxurious alternative to traditional chlorine pools. They use low levels of salt to 'chlorinate' and maintain the PH of the pool. Without harsh chemicals the pool water leaves skin silky smooth and doesn't sting kiddie eyes.

The patio furniture is perfect for soaking up the rays or whiling away the lazy days under the shade of the pergola. The property is tastefully landscaped with tropical foliage and fruit trees. It has a delightful outdoor shower for rinsing off after a day at the beach or showering under the night sky bright with stars. Simply dreamy.

The fully equipped kitchen is open to the living room and has a 6 burner gas stove, a full size fridge/freezer with ice maker, and even a dishwasher! (A rare treat in these parts.) There is a whole house water purification system allowing our guests to drink the water from any tap in the house. The dining table can seat up to six and the kitchen bar has seating for four more. There is a flat screen TV (no cable available at this time), DVD player, as well as an XBOX game system with games. There is a portable BOSE sound system to use with your device. We have a small assortment of movies, books, games, and kids' toys.

The master bedroom has a king size bed with 600 thread count Egyptian cotton sheets and fabulous pillows. Two sets of hand crafted French doors open to the pool. The master bath has gorgeous Parota wood counter tops, dual sinks, and a custom rock shower with rain head.

The second bedroom has a queen size bed, as well as a sleeping loft with an additional queen bed. The sleeping loft is ideal for kids (or limber adults). The second bedroom has a private bath with a stunning rock shower and rain head. The two couches in the living room can double as twin beds (although one is shorter than a normal twin - again, perfect kid size). Both bedrooms and the living room have their own air conditioning units with remote control. Each bedroom has a safe that will fit your laptop.

Barefoot House in Sayulita is equipped with a small assortment of beach gear available to our guests including beach towels & chairs. We hope that you'll be able to 'unplug' as much as possible while on vacation, but we do have Wi-Fi available to our guests.

We're super excited to announce that the Barefoot House is on the move toward becoming Green! We recently added an extensive rooftop solar system that helps to offset our carbon 'barefoot' print.

If you are interested, our 6 seater golf cart is available for rent for an additional $60 per night. This is a lovely mode of transportation around town, especially when lugging groceries from the Farmers Market and tired kiddos.

Wherever you decide to stay, we hope that you enjoy Sayulita as much as we do.

About Heather Stewart

We're the Stewart Family - Dave, Heather, Cole, Emerson, Eve and Soleil. We live on the Central Coast of California. We own a small business and we try to live a lifestyle that allows us to visit Sayulita as often as possible. In 2009 and 2010 we spent 6 months living in Sayulita. The kids went to school at the public schools in town, and we built the 'Barefoot House'. We had the time of our lives. We surfed and ate fish tacos to our hearts' content. We hope to live there again someday. But, in the meantime, we are offering our cozy casita as a vacation rental.

Heather Stewart purchased this house in 2010

Why Heather Stewart chose Sayulita

We bought our 'little piece of paradise' in March of 1998 when our oldest (now almost 19) was just a baby. We visited a few times after that and then got busy with life. You know how that goes. Four kids and 10 years later we came for a visit and remembered just how special Sayulita is. We made plans to return for a 'cultural exchange' and to build our little casita on the hill. In 2009-2010, we spent 6 months in Sayulita and oversaw the building of our bungalow that we affectionately coined 'The Barefoot House'. You'll have to visit to find out how it got its name. Hint: You'll love the salt water pool.

What makes this house unique

We like to think our house is rather cozy. The beds are plush and beautiful with lots of pillows. Since we were here during the construction we were able to add a lot of personal touches that make the house homey. Also, since we built the house to accommodate our family it is equipped with comforts like a dishwasher, full size fridge with ice maker (heavenly), and a whole house drinking water system so the kids can brush their teeth with no worries. These are really nice features when traveling with kids.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Hi Dave,

We would love to head back to your little piece of heaven in Sayulita 4/12-20 (we'd actually been planning on Feb 15-23 but switched dates since you are already booked - we love your place...and I almost never go back to the same place twice so that says a lot). Please pencil us in if it hasn't booked since I looked at the calendar.

Awesome!!! The Barefoot House is AWESOME!

  • 5 of 5

Loved this house, very comfortable and nicely decorated. The pool was so fun to have right out on the patio. The walk up “gringo hill” was enjoyable since there is often a nice breeze and beautiful views of the mountains and ocean.

Owner Review of the Barefoot House during the holidays!

  • 5 of 5

Hi there! My name is Heather Stewart, and my husband and I bought our little slice of paradise in 1998 when we were young newlyweds and just crazy enough to buy untitled land in Mexico (much to our parents' combined chagrin). We didn't do much with our land for over ten years while we put down some roots and started our "grown up life" in California. In 2009-2010, we spent 6 months living with our 4 kids in Sayulita during which time construction was completed on the Barefoot House. We just got back from an awesome stay at the BH, and I was prompted by VRBO to leave a review of my stay! So although, as the owner, this review will be slightly biased, I thought I would take the opportunity to share some of my thoughts about our time in Sayulita and at the Barefoot House (Dec. 28 - Jan. 8). First, I can't say enough about the really great location. Town was really busy during the first half of our stay, and it was SO nice to be able to retreat to the peace and quiet of our house on the hill (and sleep!). Second, the pool and pool deck were really relaxing. There are so many fun things to do in and around Sayulita, but one of our favorites was just relaxing by the pool. The sun is perfect on the pool all day and the surrounding trees are home to tons of really cool birds and several iguana families. Sitting by the pool and looking out across the deck into the trees allows for an amazing living espectáculo (show). While we were there, we replaced the knife set (they were quite dull - my apologies to our previous renters). We also replaced some other basic kitchen stuff that we found subpar (new frying pans, new wine bottle opener, new potato peeler, new can opener, etc). There is a brand new fridge with chilled water and ice maker. I love on demand ice! The brand new propane BBQ works great (some friends brought up some fresh caught mahi-mahi. We sashimi'd some and BBQ'd the rest. SO good!! You can charter a panga right off of the south beach, near Don Pedro's and do some fishing, if you are so inclined.) As usual, I always appreciate the whole house water filtration system, especially with the kiddos. I don't have to worry about them brushing their teeth and forgetting not to slurp any water. And, I'll let you in on a little secret. Summer is my favorite time of year in Sayulita: less touristy but still lots to do; no wait at the best restaurants; warm ocean; tropical weather; and, my favorite, fireflies off of the pool deck!! Enjoy! ~The BH Fam

Barefoot Paradise!

  • 5 of 5

We spent a week here with another couple and LOVED it! There was plenty of room for all of us. Bedrooms at opposite sides of the house allowed for some privacy. Well supplied kitchen. When the blender broke, we notified the house manager and had a replacement the next day. The pool was wonderful, we spent most of the day lounging in the sun and swimming. Rented the golf cart for going into town in the evening. It was close enough to walk to town, but I have a foot injury, so the golf cart was a treat! Would definitely stay here again.

Owner's Response: Hi Lissa ~ Thank you for the feedback, and I'm sorry you were anything less than enamored with the Barefoot House. We pride ourselves in making sure that our house, yard, pool, and staff are exceptional. I am available on my cell phone 24/7 and by email. Nancy, our house manager, lives just down the way and is also available at a moment's notice to help our guests with anything they need while staying at the Barefoot House. I wish you would have reached out to either of us during your stay so we could have made those things right. There is an extra propane tank in the garage that Nancy would have had hooked up for you. The stove/oven are brand new, so again, I wish you would have reached out to us so we could have walked you through getting it going. We stock the house with the basic consumable items for our guests' convenience (paper towels, sponges, dish soap, hand soap, toilet paper, etc.) but we don't stock the house with things like tin foil, wax paper, or zip locks. Everyone has their preferences for those items, and there is no way for us to keep everyone's preferences stocked at the BH. Thanks for letting us know about the dish towels. Yoli, our housekeeper, is wonderful so I imagine that was just an oversight. Thanks again for the feedback and the reservation. ~Heather

Great Trip

  • 5 of 5

We had the best time in Sayulita. The barefoot house was a fantastic fit for our family; myself, my husband and 2 year old son. Setting-up everything with Nancy was very easy. Our arriving flight was 40 minutes early and I was concerned that the car service might not be there, but he was! The driver said they check the flight status, smart. They even arranged to have a car seat there for my son. It made the travel, so easy. We rented the golf cart and it was vital in getting up and down the hill. Probably not a terrible walk for some, but with our son and beach gear; the golf cart was key. Truly cannot wait to go back. Very nice town, lots of ex pats and others who frequent the area.

Beautiful home but not ideal location, plus needs some updating

  • 3 of 5

The house is beautiful and we had a great time but it does need some LTC. We ran into several issues we were not expecting. First, the location, it's great that it sits on a hill, but just getting to the house, it is so steep we were afraid to fall every-time we had to climb the driveway and just bringing things to and from the house was not pleasant. Also the BBQ grill did not work, we bought lots of meat only to find out we could not cook it, we notified Nancy but she was not able to resolve the issue. Then we rented the golf cart for two days but due to issues of the golf cart not charging properly, we did not have the keys to the golf cart for the two full days. The AC unit in the master bedroom was leaking a lot of water, the lights in the bathrooms were very dim. Not having access to the washer and dryer is also a big negative since we had to pay extra for laundry, having a pool and beach close by we needed to wash towels more often than once a week. The dining table felt like it was going to tip over, very loose and flimsy. The kitchen utensils and containers could use some updating as well.

Owner's Response: I am really surprised by this review. I went above and beyond to accommodate this large group, and I was very gracious in allowing them to have additional family members from the area come visit during their stay although that is usually against our policy. The guest made their reservation for 6 people (which is our max), but then they arrived with a group of 7. Our driveway is very steep, but I'm surprised that the guest says they weren't aware of that. This is copied and pasted from our personal correspondence, before their arrival at the Barefoot House: "First, our driveway is very steep and narrow and parking is very tight so there is really only room in the driveway for one car." And this description is copied and pasted from our Barefoot House Guest Letter that every guest receives (but doesn't always read): "The Barefoot House is ahead on the right, down a very steep driveway." We do our best to make sure our guests have an accurate understanding of what to expect from our lovely, hilltop location. Our washer and dryer share a space with our pool room equipment so we keep it locked so small children can't get in there with the machinery and pool chemicals. We always provide access to our laundry facilities if a guest requests access. I am available on my cell 24/7 and by email and so is Nancy, our house manager, who lives just down the way. We would have happily provided access had the guest requested it. Also, Nancy provided this group with extra towels when they requested them, but with their large group and additional visitors I can understand why they struggled with towels. The BBQ ran out of propane during this reservation. We have since purchased a second propane tank so we don't have a delay in getting it filled. I will happily reimburse the guest for the meat that they were unable to cook. The golf cart needed it's charging computer reset. The guest was without the cart for a few hours while they were at the beach. I have refunded 1 day of their golf cart rental for the inconvenience. The hand made, traditional equipale table is very well made, but I can understand how it may seem flimsy. I assure you it is a fine table. The lighting throughout our home is designed to be subtle and relaxing. We appreciate the feedback regarding the kitchen utensils.
