This is a cozy cottage sitting directly on the shore of private Lake Gardner on top of Mount Gardner in Bath NH. This is a private area that feels remote, but is not far from necessary shopping area and restaurants.

About Jane Warren

I am a business owner who lives in Massachusetts, but love to get away to the White Mountains for rest and relaxation. I have a local property manager and cleaning service for the benefit of my tenants if anything is required. I like to rent the cottage to people who respect the property and the quiet location.

Jane Warren purchased this cottage in 1986

Why Jane Warren chose White Mountains

I originally purchased this property for my own use, but as I seem to have less and less time for vacationing, I decided to rent the cottage during times that I will not be occupying it.

What makes this cottage unique

This is a great place to de stress from the hectic world! The forest and the lake are wonderful surroundings, away from city and town life. Bath is close by for shopping, restaurants, groceries, and laundry. One of my favorite places is Lost River caves which is close by, but there are many beautiful spots. The Fall is also a great time to visit.

Guestbook comments from the owner

I have always wanted to stay in a rustic cabin with a screen porch overlooking a lake. After serching on Craigs List I found this place and it was what I was looking for. It is a simple cabin with two decent size bedrooms. It has a nice large claw foot tub for a good soak. There are some floaties and a aluminum row boat. The lake itself is very serene and warm to swim in. No motor boats! Very quiet and peaceful, especially nice to sit on the screen poarch and watch the moon come up over the water. I even saw a loon one morning.

The living room and kichen are tiled in Mexican tile. You must bring your own sheets, towels and blankets which I like to do anyway cause I like my own stuff. It is really out of the way but only minutes to a little town with all you need and we took some great trips to through the White Mountain region, also close. It is simple and rustic which I like but if you need luxury, it may not be for you. The kitchen is fully equiped so no need to bring pots and pans.

All in all, a good place to relax and get away from it all; lovely for swimming.

The location is beautiful, remote, and peaceful. We had a wonderful time and hope to stay here again in the future. The house was great and exactly as advertised.

A quiet, cozy, fun little getaway!

  • 5 of 5

Depending on your point of view, we were on the correct side of the mountain. Cell service, internet, and even tv reception were non existent. (There is tv and a bluray player with movies already there). I had to drive to the next town over to get phone service and go to establishments to get wifi. I enjoyed being disconnected.

But what was existent was just the best. You're only 10 minutes away from the walmart, so for starters anything you need is minutes away. The house and lake? Fabulous. The swimming was so refreshing in the cool water and the fishing was tremendous. My wife, 5 yr old son and I caught 40+ fish in 4 days. Don't take your eyes off your rods bc the smallmouth are big enough to take your rod in the water and then you have to jump in fully clothed after it...I was taking another small mouth off a hook for my son when that happened and just before we landed him he snapped the line when he went under the dock! Bust. We only went on the boat once, the majority of our fishing was right off the dock. Perch, golden shiners(I know, right?!), catfish, good sized pickerel and small mouth bass was what we caught. My mom wanted me to bring her back some bass, but we let them all go. Eating our meals on the screened in deck without anyone on a connected device took me back to my childhood. The grill is new. We roasted marshmallows in the fireplace...getting my 5 yr old to eat any was another story.

But there's more to do than just stay put at the house. The ride up on "the kanc" was breathtaking and we did stop and go to the lost river gorge and beaver pond scenic view. Just a half hour away. We went sight seeing around Bath and there's a covered bridge just down the street from the house. Although no moose or bear (no bear was a good thing) we saw plenty of deer, turkey, chickens and cows.

My family had a lot of fun up there and I can see us up there again next summer.

Great stay, beautiful views

  • 4 of 5

Overall our stay was pleasant! I'll start with what we loved:

The location, it's so quite and private from it all, yet only 10 min to the local store. Also the porch over the lake is where we spent most of our time relaxing. The views are great, we got to see the lunar eclipse in perfection! Also, It's very nice of them to leave a row boat to go out on the lake too! We loved that and the nice little fire pit! We enjoyed our stay and would recommend this place to our friends.

There are some small improvements that could be made. Our small complaint is the furniture. We traveled a lot on our stay so it wasn't too concerning, but the couches are comfy, but well overdue for replacement. There's no coffee table in the living room. The beds provided are not the most comfortable. There is a pull down full bed thats quite hard. The two twin beds are fine, but the queen upstairs bedframe was previously taped on the leg which gave out at night. All fine for a nights sleep, but certainly not the most comfortable.

We anticipated the water coming from the lake, as we were told, so there is a minimal smell from from doing dishes, but it's not bad.

It was a fabulous spot to visit and we certainly made use of what they had to offer. If your looking for some peace and quite, this is a great little spot!

Quiet and remote

  • 3 of 5

The property was a bit of a drive, but not too far from stores, I'd recommend bringing a vehicle that can handle rough terrain . The lake was quiet and perfect for kayaking and canoeing. However the water wasn't too inviting to swim in. The cabin was a good size but needed some TLC both inside and out. There wasn't much of a yard (although the dock made up for it), the kayak and row boat had no paddles (there were only canoe paddles), 2 of the 3 tiki torches were broken, the big grill was too dirty to use, there was broken glass and cigarettes in the fire pit, broken glass inside on the floor, and there were hornet nests around the property. I would advise bringing drinking water because all the water in the cabin was supplied directly from the lake, which wasn't too bad, but I still wouldn't drink it. Warn friends ahead of time that you'll have no cell phone service or means of communication for a while becaause cell service is spotty at best (although I expected this and actually enjoyed it).

Water pressure went out during our stay and we had no water the first night, but they quickly sent someone out to fix it the next day.

Overall it was a nice quiet qetaway, in a nice little community, the view of the lake is great, but the cabin needs a little TLC. So if you don't mind roughing it a little then it will be perfect for you.

Owner's Response: Our cottage is in the White Mountains, so roads can be steep. The only unpaved road is the road up the mountain. It is less than 1/8 of a mile and rather steep, but it may be worth noting. Depending on your cell provider, you will have limited cell reception. Mine works if I stand in the driveway area but the mountains interfere with reception in many places all over the state. I am very sorry you found the swimming uninviting and I am not sure what you meant by that exactly. The water in the lake is tested by the State of NH yearly and is fed by a mountain spring. Prior to your review, I had already replaced the paddles which came up missing per my property manager. Anytime something like that occurs, I would advise a tenant to call me directly so I can rectify any issues. The tiki torches were not supplied by me and must have been brought in by a former tenant. I would consider them a fire hazard, so I may also add “no tiki torches” to my check in information! My furnishings are older, as it’s a camp, not a vacation condo, but I pay to have it thoroughly cleaned after each rental. I will advise my cleaning crew of the fire pit and glass. There are two grills on the property, one brand new and one old one that we have not removed yet. Not sure why you didn’t use the new one ? Most importantly, my check in information says that drinking water must be brought in by the tenant, and that the water supply from the lake is not for drinking, so this should not have been a surprise. I am sorry that your experience was mixed. Any issues could have been addressed very promptly with a phone call the day of your arrival. . No one should be afraid to call regarding any issues right away. I want everyone to have a great time .Why be unhappy and wait until your stay is over ? I am glad you found the peace and quiet to your liking. This is what we love about the place as well.
