Overview

About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms + Bunk Area, 3.5 Baths, (Sleeps 6-8)

We invite you to escape to this beautiful, very private traditional Ocean Front Hawaiian home, just minutes from downtown Kona and a wide variety of other attractions.

This 2850 square foot home is perfect for family gatherings with a large master bedroom, a queen-bed bedroom, a 'bonus room' with bunk beds, and two and half baths. There is an additional studio-style 'ohana' (apartment) that is attached to the main house that has a queen bed, private bath, kitchen, washer/dryer and private entrance. The home is furnished in a comfortable, casual Hawaiian theme...some of the furniture is hand-made by Hawaiian artists. There are ceiling fans throughout the house. The kitchen is well-appointed with everything necessary to cook and then some, such as a blender, rice cooker, etc.

Open the French doors that stretch across the front of the home to allow in the Trade Winds, a wonderful respite from A/C. During the day, take a trip to the volcano, go whale-watching, visit the restaurants and shops of downtown Kona, or go deep-sea fishing. There are fascinating tide pools in the lava rocks right behind the house that are home to sea turtles, crustaceans, and an abundance of small fish. This house is a short walk from the sandy beaches of Magic Sands, or a half mile drive to the protected lagoon known for snorkeling. Be prepared to see gorgeous fish and gentle sea turtles!

Make sure to be home in the early evening, around 6pm, to relax in the hammock or on the lounge furniture and catch the famous Hawaiian sunset while drinking a Mai Tai! (see recipe below). During the winter months, watch carefully for the migrating humpback whales that swim. and sometimes breach, right in front of the house. If you're not in the mood to make your own Mai Tai, walk two doors down to Jameson's restaurant, which has a five star ocean view and wonderful food.

At night, each bedroom is filled with the sounds of waves crashing onto the lava rocks. This property is gated and walled which lets you relax and think of nothing but being part of a tropical paradise.

About Kathy Johns

We love to travel and of course, stay in nice places. Over the years, we've taken our 2 children many places they'll never forget. We hope our Kona beach home will become one of those unforgettable memories in your travels as well.

Kathy Johns purchased this house in 1999

Why Kathy Johns chose Kona Coast

We came to Kona and fell in love with it, now we would like to share that with you.

What makes this house unique

It could not be more ocean-front than this, watching sea turtles, tropical birds, dolphins and whales while eating breakfast, remaining in the United States but feeling like you are a world away.

Guestbook comments from the manager

I wanted to thank you for the fantastic accommodations during our recent stay in Kona. They exceeded our expectations, and we did not miss a single sunset…and the sea turtles even showed up a few times!

I will definitely be in touch if my travels take me to the Big Island again!

Great location, great view from the back lanai.

  • 4 of 5

The house met our needs. Great location. Really beautiful view of the water and lava rocks from the back yard. The kitchen was well equipped with everything we needed to cook. The only drawback was that there was no air conditioning in the house, except a unit in the master bedroom. So the house was very, very HOT, even with all of the fans blowing.

Fabulous!!

  • 4 of 5

I would have given 5 stars if there was aircon in other bedrooms. Kids room never cooled down even with fan and windows open. Falling asleep for them was challenging. Aside for some updates, the location is the best !! I would recommend this location- tons to do - we didn't cover many things despite staying 6 days! Walkable beaches were so great for our group with 3 small kids

Beautiful home in a great location

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time staying at the Pineapple house. The kitchen was well equipped and clean. The living area was perfect for our family to watch the NHL & NBA finals, we enjoyed the games with the french doors open...the sound of the ocean and breeze was perfect. Each room of the house is on the ocean side so you can fall asleep to the sound of the ocean and a nice breeze. The house should be advertised as 4 bedrooms, the bunk room was perfect for our 19 year old son. The beds were all comfortable, the house has all the linens you need and plenty of beach towels. There is plenty of snorkel gear and beach toys.

We grilled on the large propane grill several nights and enjoyed dinner on the patio. The house is less than 10 minutes away from a large shopping plaza with a grocery store and drug store. It's also less than a 5 minute walk to a nice beach.

The owner is very responsive to emails and went above and beyond to ensure we were having a nice stay. I highly recommend the pineapple house.

Amazing Ocean Front Property

  • 5 of 5

My family and i stayed at this property for 5 nights between May 19th and May 24th and we could not be happier with what we were provided with. There were 8 of us yet we were all extremely comfortable here. The extra Granny flat with its own kitchen really helped with the space.

The view and spectacular sunsets cannot be put into words and have to be seen. We cooked on the BBQ almost every night and all amenities and dishes were kept clean and orderly.

This was truly a no fuss property with instructions for entry and departing made extremely easy.

The property is only a 2 minute walk from a public beach where you can snorkel from and sea life such as turtles, however all you need to do to see turtles is look from the window of the property as they were in abundance around the rocks.

My Family an i would like to thank Kathy for allowing us to stay in her wonderful property and will definitely be returning on our next visit to the Big Island.

Mahalo,

Alex

Great house in perfect location

  • 5 of 5

I almost hate to write such a positive review, since it increases the chances that the house won't be available next time we want to stay. Sharing is the right thing to do, however.

The house is very welcoming. There's nothing stiff or formal about it, and it feels like home right away. The master bedroom is exquisite, and the other two are quite serviceable. There's also a separate ohana unit, which can stand alone, with its own kitchen, TV etc. The house is very well equipped.

I also love the location, about five miles south of Kailua, close to Magic Sands Beach. MSB is always crowded, but there's a lovely little uncrowded beach with good breeze just two doors down. What with Sam Choy's and the KTA supermarket two miles south, you can go for days without going near a t-shirt shop. If you prefer to be up in the thick of it, you're only minutes away.

The best thing about the house is its very wide (100"?) lanai along the water. The intrepid can swim and snorkel off the lava rocks. The rest of us can watch the sea turtles and schools of fish just off the lanai.

You'll be very glad if you choose to stay here.

Awesome oceanfront location!

  • 4 of 5

If you want to be close to the ocean, this is the place. Wave spray from sea wall on the car every morning, turtles & fish always in view, dolphins at a distance every day. House is older but very clean & well kept. If the surf is low (which was only our 1st day) you can snorkel right from the house. Great central location in Kona.

Tide pools with fish and sea turtles right off back wall. Walk to Magic Sands beach, 3 minutes away. We are very close, less than half mile away, to a beautiful public beach with protected lagoon for swimming and snorkeling.
