Charming Oceanfront Cottage-Great Views and 20 Feet from Shore

Bedrooms 2
Half Baths1
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 7 - 90 nights

About the property

Quaint Seaside Cottage, 2 Bedrooms, 1.5 Baths, (Sleeps 4)

Sea Smoke is a delightful cottage offering a peaceful and cozy getaway with spectacular, long views up and down the lovely ocean bay surrounding Rays Point.  This comfortable 2 bedroom, 1½ bath cottage is located in a quiet neighborhood of other cottages and farms on one of Washington County’s most scenic peninsulas. There are wonderful panoramic views of the ever changing tides with many granite points and islands to explore.

One of Sea Smoke’s biggest advantages is its location – there are only a handful of rental cottages close to the services and amenities of the quaint fishing village of Milbridge, yet far enough away to offer wonderful oceanfront views and countryside privacy. Unlike many of the very remote areas around us, Sea Smoke is conveniently located just 5 miles from Milbridge’s small village center where you will find a good modern grocery story, two restaurants, pharmacy, gas station, public library, medical center, and a couple of cute gift shops to explore. Although there are other lovely cottages to rent across Downeast Maine, you’ll find the convenience of our location combined with Sea Smoke’s scenic, rural atmosphere to be a big plus.

Offering numerous amenities, this clean and comfortable cottage is just 20 feet from the water's edge. Sea Smoke's close proximity to the shore ensures terrific up close water views. Visitors have direct access to the shore via a short set of stairs located in front of the cottage.  A waterside patio is the perfect spot for relaxing with a book while basking in the sun’s warmth and enjoying the refreshing cool afternoon breezes that come off the ocean and bay.

Sea Smoke cottage takes its name from the occasional and brief summer fogs that roll in gently and peacefully from the open ocean and down the bays along the rocky coast of Downeast Maine.  From the cottage you can enjoy watching the clammers as well as the lobster and pleasure boats that come in and out of the channel leading to the open ocean.  You'll delight in watching the late afternoon sun create a spectacular show as its rays light up the pink and orange granite shores of nearby Blaskett Point and Peace Point.  At night you can watch the moon rise across the bay, enjoy thousands of stars, and even the occasional display of the northern lights.

Sea Smoke is the perfect size and location for a small family or for couples wanting to get away from it all. The interior of the cottage is decorated with a country contemporary flair, centered around its water views and rocky shoreline.  The master bedroom offers a queen bed, large closet and an attached private half bath. The guest room features two twin beds. The cottage also has a fully updated center bath, with tub & shower. There is a glass fronted great-room that includes a dining area, living room with classic wood burning metal fireplace, satellite TV with DVD player, Wi-Fi Internet, and a well equipped kitchen. The cottage includes many extras such as CD player, washer, dryer, games, outdoor gas grill, firewood, phone, and all linens/towels. Cell service is good in the area for most carriers including ATT, Verizon, and others.

The waters off of Sea Smoke are wonderful for kayaking or canoeing with the tides to “seal island” where you will see numerous seals and nesting birds.  This is a tidal bay with DownEast tides changing by as much as 14 feet every 6 hours. So, launching from the cottage is limited to hours around high tide; there is a deep water launch site in Milbridge.

There are several pairs of Bald Eagles nesting nearby, and they are often seen flying over the bay in front of the cottage. You will likely see seals, terns, loons, ducks, and other shore birds along with the foxes, porcupines, and deer that call the Rays Point Peninsula their home.  In July and August you can pick wild blueberries and raspberries along the road. The area around the cottage is perfect for walking or biking.

With the cottage's central location along Maine’s beautiful Downeast coast, vacationers have many options to choose from when planning the day’s excursions to take advantage of the area’s plentiful sights, activities and cultural events.

In the immediate area of the cottage we recommend hiking and exploring the beautiful ocean side McClellan Park in Milbridge or doing a boat tour of the local islands or the Puffin colonies at the beautiful Petit Manan light house.

You can also visit Petit Manan Wildlife Refuge (Recently renamed Maine Coastal Islands National Wildlife Refuge). The coastal hiking trails are spectacular and the seabirds colonies are a wonder to watch.  Petit Manan also allows public access and picking in the refuge's enormous wild blueberry barrens.

An absolute must is the 15 mile drive to see the stunning mainland section of Acadia National Park at Schoodic Peninsula with it spectacular granite cliffs and large crashing surf.  The park offers wonderful walking trails and you can drive to the top of the 'mountain' for breathtaking views of the ocean, islands, forests, and other mountains in the area.  Along the way visit the small but charming walking villages of Corea and Winter Harbor where you will find a passenger ferry service to Bar Harbor.

Take a day trip to Bar Harbor (60 minutes), or travel up the coast to explore Campobello Island (Canada) and FDR's beautiful summer home (60 minutes).  In the same area, you will find the breathtaking Quoddy Head State Park Lighthouse, the easternmost point in the U.S., with wonderful hikes and walks including an arctic bog nature walk.

Whatever your interest, this terrific area will not disappoint vacationers looking for the real Maine experience.

Sea Smoke cottage is 1½ hours from Bangor and the Bangor International Airport, 3½ hours northeast of Portland, 5½ hours from Boston, 8½ hours from New York City, and 2 hours from St. Stephen, New Brunswick. The house is 1 hour from Bar Harbor and the Mt. Desert island portion of Acadia National Park.

Sea Smoke cottage welcomes well behaved dogs and smoking is not permitted. A minimum stay of 4 nights is required.

fantastic oceanfront cottage

  • 5 of 5

We had an amazing vacation at Sea Smoke Cottage. Milbridge allows for great proximity to Bar Harbor, Acadia, and exploring the beautiful coast line. Rogue Bluffs was one of our favorite walks and well worth the drive. The cottage itself was a great fit for us - clean and comfortable, 10 minutes to town for groceries and gas, a cozy wood stove, TV/DVD player, and of course the private and peaceful oceanfront location. We especially appreciated the dog-friendly accommodations at Sea Smoke and surrounding areas as well. Last but not least, many thanks to the caretaker Mike for his prompt attention to all of our needs. Thank you again for a most wonderful vacation!

Wonderful Charm

  • 5 of 5

This wonderful charming cottage was our home base for discovering Maine and its harbor towns. The property exceeded our expectations in every way and the property owners were incredibly hospitable. Our experience was phenomenal and the property pictures aren't capable of capturing the extreme beauty the cottage provided us. Since we've left we can't stop telling all our family and friends that there is no better vacation value than Maine and the Sea Smoke Cottage.

Peaceful, relaxing,

The vacation of a lifetime.....

  • 5 of 5

As I sit here on my last day at Sea Smoke, I am reflecting on the wonderful vacation we had here in Maine. I am looking at the beautiful bay (high tide) with the sun reflecting off of the water, so peaceful and so beautiful! I cannot believe it is time to leave - would have loved another week - maybe next time 😊 We would take a walk to Rays Point every morning - a definite must to get your day started. We also visited Acadia National Park / Schoodic Point, McClellan Park, Cadillac Mountain, Bar Harbor (such a cute town) and had a carriage ride at Carriages of Acadia. I had quite a few lobster rolls too - a definite must - delicious! After all the activities and being able to retreat every night back to Sea Smoke - it truly was an amazing and relaxing time. We had a couple nights grilling at the cottage which was great with the fantastic ambiance. Sea Smoke had all of the amenities one needs for the perfect vacation. The cottage was peaceful and charming with a rustic feel - truly exceptional! Thank you for everything - our best family vacation to date! We will be back Sea Smoke and cannot wait to see you again!!

A hidden gem on Rays Point

  • 5 of 5

Sea Smoke proved to be a perfect gathering place for a week of fun and relaxation with friends. The cottage has a rustic charm, offers privacy and a serene ocean bay view. We loved going for long walks in the morning, watching all of the wildlife and seeing the spectacular sunrises/sunsets. The waterside patio was perfect for enjoying meals outside while watching the tide roll in/out. The location of the cottage makes it very convenient to get to the local stores and restaurants, nearby towns and even take several short day trips (we visited Acadia National Park, Bar Harbor, Belfast, Camden, Cherryfield, Corea, and Ellsworth). This property truly is a hidden gem and a real value. This will become an annual destination for us.

Exactly What We Wanted- Cozy, Clean, Scenic, and Quiet

  • 5 of 5

I am several weeks late in posting a review. However, I feel compelled to post because the reviews here helped us make a very good selection. Also, I want to thank the owners of this very nice cottage and the caretaker who was so helpful for the perfect week we spent here. The house was exactly what one hopes for - very clean, cozy, comfortably appointed, nice and quiet. We truly relaxed here and recharged ourselves. Like others have mentioned in their reviews, the views looking out over the bay were big and beautiful, and the patio is very nice for spending a morning or afternoon. Being that it was a cool weather time of year, we enjoyed fires in the living room's open stove fireplace at night and making two big pots of hearty seafood stew with large quantities of fresh seafood we purchased in town. There's plenty to do in the area if you want to stay busy - Acadia, lighthouses, Schoodic, Bar Harbor and so on. We did visit Schoodic and Quoddy Head- both great. For us, however, the best parts were reading by the fire, enjoying the peaceful tranquility of the setting, watching the wildlife, and going for refreshing walks - all of which we did and thoroughly enjoyed. It was late in the season and we didn't bring our kayak because of weather concerns. However, we'll return, and definitely bring our kayak because the area is PERFECT for kayaking. This was our first time to Milbridge. It's a good little town with all the basics - grocery, bank, post office. The location of the cottage was 3 or so miles out from town on a peninsula with bays on either side. It is a convenient location to town yet far enough out to feel very private. I think some of the other nearby areas we considered- Corea, Steuben, Harrington- would have been a bit too far out since they have to go to Milbridge for groceries and such. That's why we were pleased with Milbridge for our choice. The cottage itself was cozy and comfortable. Cozy is the word that just keeps coming to mind whenever I think about our time there- relaxing on the couch late at night, fire going, wife's fuzzy slippers, soup on the stove, glass of wine in hand, good book or movie to look at. We also thought it was a good price for a nice place - especially after driving around and checking out a couple of others we had considered in our search. So, I'd say this is a good choice if you want a nice, comfortable place with all the basics covered because you can be active or just relax in great scenic surroundings.
