Are you looking for a convenient and comfortable beach getaway? To get here it only takes us a few minutes from Williamsburg and there are no tunnels and the Colonial Parkway rarely has any road rage drivers or traffic jams like those found on the interstate or 158 to Nags Head.
Whether you like to play on the sand beach, bask in the sun, sit in a swing, lay in a hammock, go crabbing, fishing, or boating, or curl up with a good book or sack out with a good movie, Getaway has it all.
Gloucester is still a community that feels like a small town, much like Nags Head in the early 80's, with lots of local shops and local restaurants, but still has some nice franchises and chain restaurants if you are not but so adventurous.
Traditionally rented by the week, we can make special arrangements for a weekend or split week. Do you have family coming to town? Why not put them up here?

About Greg Granger
I was born and raised in Williamsburg, Virginia. Married my beautiful wife Lisa and we have three great kids who enjoy canoeing & kayaking on the river.
Greg Granger purchased this House in 2007
Why Greg Granger chose Hayes
I chose to buy this vacation home because of its proximity to Williamsburg. It is close enough for a quick drive and just far enough to feel like you are really getting away. Growing up in Williamsburg we often traveled to Virginia Beach or the Outer Banks of North Carolina for vacation. Now a lovely drive on the Colonial Parkway over the Coleman Bridge and we are there without the headache of a long traffic filled road trip.
What makes this House unique
My family loves to spend a day on the river kayaking, canoeing and lounging on the sandy beach. After a full day on the river we enjoy cooking out with friends, and maybe playing some volley ball or horse shoes. It is so laid back and relaxing for all of us. We Love the hammock and swing. Great place, room for everyone, and enough bathrooms, excellent place.
Driving to the location was easy. Upon arriving we found our way in and were surprised by the layout of the house. We explored every corner. Big kitchen with plenty of pots, pans, plates and cups. The master bedroom was impressive. The upstairs confused people but quickly got the hang of the upstairs layout. The outside access to the river was great. There were a few cons we noticed: the hand-held can opener didn’t really work, some of the pillows were kind of flat, and there were a few spiders but that’s nature’s fault. All in all everyone had a good time staying there. It was good location for what we needed.
Gorgeous river front setting and comfortable home
We rented this home for a family 50th anniversary. There were 9 of us and the accommodations were comfortable. The kitchen has plenty of countertop space for preparing food and adequate tools and utensils. The layout of the bedrooms was a bit unusual because you have to pass through two of the bedrooms to get to the upper loft room and the child's room. This didnt bother us so much but it may others depending on how much privacy guests need. We enjoyed the hammock by the beach area and got permission to fish on the neighbor's dock which was delightful. The back deck and yard could use more seating or lawn chairs, as the only ones there were from the back porch and a bit cumbersome to move. The master suite and bath truly are a wing of the house that is its own spacious area. The laundry area is only accessed however through the master suite. There are 3 1/2 baths in this home which was fine for a group our size. The water does have a strong sulphur smell to it which is fine for showers and washing dishes, but we brought drinking water. All in all we were very pleased with this rental.
Great place, but not what I expected
The house itself was pretty roomy and comfortable, but I wish they had disclosed that the water was Well Water, as I am pregnant and not allowed to drink well water. You do have an option of purchasing water, but all showers and baths smelled horribly of sulphur from the well water. It was quite a shock. It would smell up the whole house during "bath time".
The beach is smaller than I expected but the children enjoyed it. Make sure you have swim shoes as it is VERY Rocky and slimey. The kids all had a good time playing in it, and the water doesn't get extremely deep. The owners offer use of a canoe and that was super fun, as was the hammock. A lot of little extras that kept the kids happy and busy!
The AC unit froze up a few times as whoever was in the house prior to us left the unit to "on" rather than auto, and it froze up a time or two after that as well. I contacted the owners and they are going to be looking into it and fixing it.
Most of the rooms do not have TV, which isn't a huge deal as we weren't there to watch tv, but it would have been nice to know as we could have brought some of our own dvd's to watch. The homeowners do leave some in the rental for your personal use.
Beyond that the location is away from a lot of people, we did have a few surprise visitors (neighbor dogs and goats!!) that delighted my kids. I would recommend as it did sleep all of us quite comfortably, but I would seriously suggest maybe doing something about the water as it was really quite a disappointment.
The Shea, paz, Graham ,Willis stay
Our stay was wonderful, plenty of room for everyone the price was right. We loved the property & how everything was accessible. We even discussed coming again.
We are from Roanoke VA and stayed at the Get a Way during my son's graduation from Christopher Newport. We had plenty of space for our family and relatives. The house is very nice and has a great kitchen to prepare meals. It did rain most of our visit but the house is located on the York River, has a very nice beach area and huge backyard with trees. Great for relaxing. We would definitely return to this house for a relaxing vacation.
The location was darn near perfect. The view was awesome. Plenty of room in the house for everyone. Easy drives to Williamsburg, Yorktown and Jamestown. No complaints!
