What an opportunity to spend your family vacation in a vintage historic inn turned single family home. Built between 1857-61 by a local captain, Jacob Shop Mayo. He built this home for his family on this location so that he could oversee his ships in the harbor. Located just a few minutes walk into the village of Southwest Harbor on the "Quietside" of Mount Desert Island. This home has many historic features but has been nicely updated to accommodate a larger family or group. Each of it's five bedrooms has it's own bathroom, and many feature sitting areas and outdoor access to either decks or the garden area. Dining and living area can comfortably accommodate up to 10 guests. Kitchen has 2 dishwashers, ranges, & refrigerators to make meal times a breeze! This historic home has many outdoor areas to enjoy as well. The shared garden area will also have Adirondack chairs and a fire pit for roasting marshmallows. Charm is this house's middle name, your family will love to come back again and again to this little piece of heaven that we call Southwest Harbor! Please be patient with photos, we will update as we're able to get them... former family is in the process of moving on to new adventures!

This was the perfect spot for our family!! We loved being on the quieter side of the island but still in walking distance of shops and restaurants. The house was wonderful, charming with tons of space and beautiful views (and a bathroom for every bedroom!). We would definitely stay again!

We stayed a little over a week in July and had a lovely stay! It was perfect for our group of 9. 4 adults, who took the 2 masters, and 5 older teens. We all appreciated how big the house was, yet comfortable. The family room was perfect for us all to gather, and we squeezed in around the long table. The kitchen had all the essentials, and then some! I have stayed at a lot of VRBOs, and I must say the kitchen had the best knives in any that I’ve stayed in. It is also a bit bigger than the pictures made it seem. We appreciated all the little extras: toilet paper, paper towels, random spices, etc. There are even two washers and dryers! Had a little bar too. Very easy walk to town for delicious ice cream, popovers, coffee, and little shops. Christie was also a great communicator. If we head back to Maine, we would definitely stay here again.

Super central and spacious

Perfect central spot for our family reunion. Lots of gathering spaces and easy walk to town. Great for rainy day puzzling and board games as well as jumping off spot for all of Mt Desert Island. Some low ceilings and narrow stairs, but that just adds to the charm. 10/10, will return.

Beautiful Home Away

Our family of 8 adults and 2 kids enjoyed our family time in this beautiful tastefully decorated house. Bedrooms and bathrooms for everyone and also room for quiet time. Even great quality books and toys for our grandchildren. Short stroll to Main Street shops and Acadia NP. Kitchen well equipped with cooking utensils tho we ate out most of the time. Well recommended stay!

Kitchen and bathrooms are extremely well stocked, deco is classic, classy and well furnished Lots of private and quiet spaces for 9 of us. Love the double frig, cooking ranges, and lobster pot cooking. Our host Christi is most responsive and accommodating for our needs . Thank you for a lovely home and great customer service.

Great House in Southwest Harbor

Our family of 10 stayed at the Captain Mayo House and we had a wonderful time. The house is really amazing, so many rooms! The kitchen was great, 2 stove, 2 dishwashers, 3 refrigerators and Keurig coffee makers. All of the dinnerware and utensils were very nice. The pancake mix is to die for! Most of the furnishings are brand new including the matresses. We slept well! It is a one block walk to downtown Southwest Harbor, many little shops and one store dedicated to artisans from the area. We ate at Beals Lobster Pier (185 Clark Point Rd) and Eat A Pita (326 Main St), both were very good. I am not sure if Eat a Pita is still the name, but the address is correct. We also ate at the Colonel's in Northeast Harbor, short drive away. You must not miss Jordan Pond in the park, a great experience and pop-overs! I highly recommend this property to make great family memories!
