Two floors that can be completely independent - perfect for an extended family!
Your jaw will drop when you come to the end of the driveway and look out over the ocean to the view of Acadia. The entire property is called Main Stay, and this house is known as 'The Barn', but don't be fooled by it's name. This building has been lovingly cared for and recently renovated, with every comfort in mind. Each floor has 1,000 square feet of living space.
What makes this rental so unique is the way it is configured. Each floor can be used as an entirely separate unit, because each has a full kitchen, bath, sleeping, dining, and living area. There are three separate sleeping areas with very comfortable beds. The Barn at Mainstay can easily accommodate three couples, with two fold out sofa beds with brand new mattresses that are great for kids. The property would be ideal for two families traveling together, or for extended families. One favorite feature that brings lots of comments is the antique cast iron sink in the kitchen.
Our family has owned Main Stay for four generations. My grandmother's family bought the property back in the early 1900's and built a small family camp they called Sea Breezes. My parents retired there in the 1970's, and now my two brothers and I each enjoy our own homes on this idyllic piece of Downeast Maine.
I work as a Sr. Account Manager for Apex Learning, and my husband works for West Marine. We have a terrific teenaged son, and our much loved lab. Our favorite thing to do is go out on our boat and enjoy fishing and sightseeing from the water.
My husband and I spent the past several years extensively renovating 'The Barn'. Everything was done with the understanding that some day, we will be able to retire to our Maine home. We hope you will love it as much as we do.
Liz Price purchased this barn in 1911
The view from the tip of Oak Point looking toward Mt. Desert Island and Acadia National Park is nothing short of spectacular. There are many islands in Western Bay which are populated by seals, eagles, and even bison. The boating is legendary, the environment is pristine, and the beauty of the area is simply breathtaking.
One of the great features of this location is it is so private, and yet so convenient to everything. The airport is minutes away, and Ellsworth is great for stocking up on groceries and dining out.
The sun and moon rise over Cadillac Mountain which is framed in the huge sliders and windows. The weather changes constantly. Many mornings are still and calm, inviting kayaking and powerboating, and the afternoons often bring lively breezes that are perfect for sailing. Right around the point is Union River Bay, and Blue Hill can be seen from the southwest side of the point. Because the property faces mostly south, we have lovely sunshine that reflects off the water, so even in the winter you feel bathed in light. Foggy or stormy days bring their own pleasures, with antiquing or shopping nearby, or quiet afternoons curled up by the fire with a good book. The extensive lawn is perfect for any type of outdoor activities you might enjoy.
The unique beauty of Acadia National Park is just minutes away. There are so many things to see and do! Bar Harbor is filled with fun shopping and dining options. You can enjoy a day on a windjammer or go out on a lobster boat. Although you technically could go through Acadia National Park in a day, you wouldn't be able to do more than scratch the surface of all it has to offer in just one visit. We always get a pass to the park so we can go as often as we want while we are there. You must see the Loop Road, the views from the top of Cadillac Mountain, the Thunderhole, Sand Beach, the Carriage Roads, and so much more. Plan on visiting the Jordan Pond House to see 'The Bubbles' and try their famous popovers.
Relax and breathe in the fresh clean air, watch the waves crash on the pink granite cliffs, smell the fragrant pines, hear the gulls call. But, be careful. Once you experience the coast of Maine, it will never leave your heart.
Our family of eight stayed at the Barn at Mainstay in the month of March. We have been vacationing in Maine for about 20 years in different cabins and homes. We can say with all certainty that "the Barn at Mainstay" will be our "permanent" vacation house! The views are spectacular. The home was clean and the furnishings were all so nice. We loved daily shell hunting and the kids loved playing in the very big yard and woods in the back. Our family definitely recommends this beautiful home!
This was our first visit to Maine. We were thrilled with the amazing view of the water and easy access for kayaking! (We were right across from several islands to explore) We spent most nights outside enjoying the view on the very cozy outdoor furniture next to the fire. The kitchen was well equipped with anything and everything you would need. High end cookwear and knife set! (We are from New Orleans so we like a good kitchen to cook in). The owner was easy to reach when we had a minor issue. The barn at Mainstay was fabulous.
My husband, myself and my parents along with our two four legged friends stayed here for a week towards the end of September and had a wonderful, relaxing and amazing vacation. The property is simply beautiful! So peaceful, wonderful views, great access to the ocean. The home itself is also perfect, with plenty of space and everything you need right there. It is located close enough to the town of Bar Harbor and to Acadia National Park to be able to see everything you would want to see and experience, while being able to enjoy your own quiet piece of paradise at the end of the day. We hated to leave after our wonderful week there, but am looking forward to hopefully being able to go back again to enjoy this beautiful property next year.
Beautiful house and grounds with an incredible view! The house worked well for our two families. The location was ideal for us as we ventured into Bar Harbor and Acadia often. One of our favorite modern updates in the house - the countertops in the main level kitchen. The owner was very responsive and easy to work with.
Our family of 6 completely enjoyed ourselves in your home. We rented kayaks for the week and enjoyed ourselves so much paddling the surrounding waters, watching the seals and exploring Alley island that we didn't make it to Acadia park until the following week. Which, by the way, is stunning! My 6 y/o son asked for his birthday if we could go back to Maine...and this was after we completed our 12 hour drive home. I would be happy to oblige him~! Thank you and we hope to come back again soon.
We were thrilled to arrive at "The Barn". This very tastefully house has everything!
Charm, spectacular views of the water and landscape and a cosy gas fire. There is nothing you will want for in this home.
The garden has plenty of space and a lovely seating/dinning area to take in the breath taking views of the ocean.
Liz was very helpful. Her information about places to visit was great! We loved Acadia and got to try some fresh lobster!
We had a very relaxing and refreshing weekend. We will definitely be back.!!!
The Barn at Mainstay is within minutes of Acadia but in a peaceful secluded setting away from the crowds. There is so much to see and experience in the area. If you enjoy hiking, biking, and kayaking, this is the best place to do it. Explore the many carriage roads in the national park. Go to Wildwood Stables and take a carriage ride. Pack a picnic and find a spot along the loop road to watch the waves crash on pink granite cliffs. Drive to the top of Cadillac Mountain where the 360 degree view will leave you speechless. Drive over to Northeast Harbor, one of the most picturesque anchorages in New England. Southwest Harbor is home to some of the most prestigious yacht builders in the world. Go to Beal's Lobster Pier to eat - the only place where you can get a better lobster is at the Trenton Bridge Lobster Pound, which is only about 10 minutes from The Barn.
Take a scenic biplane ride from the Trenton Airport, where you will also see scores of Lear Jets from the rich and famous who flock to the area. Go over to the adorable funky, quaint town of Bar Harbor to shop and get a bite at one of the many restaurants, and then grab an ice cream cone and sit in the park overlooking the town pier where yachts and lobster boats sit side by side. There are art galleries, specialty shops, lots of pubs, bookstores, and so much more to explore. Take a cruise on the beautiful windjammer, Margaret Todd. Whale watching, puffin cruises, seal sightings, try your hand at lobstering - these are just a couple of the fun water activities you can enjoy. For a special occasion dinner, nothing can beat the Bar Harbor Inn, but there are so many places to go for breakfast, lunch and dinner, you won't ever run out of options.
After a busy day of outdoor activities, come back to The Barn for some quiet times sitting down by table rock with a glass of ice tea or perhaps some nice wine. If you are visiting during a time when there are cool evenings, start a fire in the chiminea. One of our favorite things to do is to put a blanket down on the grass later in the evening and watch the stars come out. If you are there in August, you will see the Persied Meteor shower. The view of the Milky Way is beyond words. Because of the clarity of the clean ocean air and the purposeful reduction of light pollution on Mt. Desert Island, the night sky is filled with stars so lovely it will remain a treasured memory forever.
A great day trip is Camden, one of the prettiest little towns along the coast. Make sure you go to the top of Mt. Battie for the full view of the harbor. Another favorite trip is Schoodic Point, which is reknowned for huge surf after ocean storms. If you go into Ellsworth, make sure to stop at Jordan's for their fried clams. Yum!
We started a ritual when our son was young of going to Pirate's Cove miniature golf on the road to the park at least once every visit during the season. He's 19 and we are still going! Lots of fun and a great family activity.
It's easy to stay active and busy, but I will confess, there are many times I just can't bring myself to leave the beauty and tranquility of The Barn at Mainstay. Once you experience it, I'm sure you will feel the same way. There is something so peaceful and relaxing, that I look forward to quiet days when the weather isn't the best so I can curl up with a good book and move from coffee, to tea, to wine as the day progresses. Do that at least once. It will cure what ails ya.
