About the property

Relax and enjoy a cozy vacation with your family, friends and pets on the Shenandoah River.

Sweetwater Vacation Properties newly renovated cottage on the South Fork of the Shenandoah River (Mile 12) north of Luray, VA. Area offers excellent hunting as well as ultra-lite and fly-fishing for Small Mouth Bass, Brim, Red Eye Bass as well as baiting for old standbys like catfish and carp. There are numerous hiking and riding trails throughout the area and over 26 miles of good canoeing water with public access. If you are into plants and trees, there are a wide variety of both in the area. I also recommend a good book and a pair of binoculars for bird watching (Baltimore Orioles are nesting along the river in spring and early summer) or curl up by the campfire or in the hammock with that favorite novel you have been meaning to read. This is definitely Virginia Outdoors at it's finest!

Sweetwater Cottage, #5 Lorelei Lane, Luray, VA, is newly renovated and is situated on 3 secluded acres along the Shenandoah River). The Cottage has a fully equipped kitchen with gas stove and oven, dishes, silverware, pots and pans, coffee maker, microwave, waffle maker, and a full bath with tub/shower combination. It now has two bedrooms, living room, dining area picnic tables, large fire pit, gas grill, and a NEW 12’x40’ screened-in porch with a spectacular river view. Sleeping arrangements in the cottage includes two queen size beds and one double futon bed in the living room and one double futon bed in the dining extension. There is DSL Internet and NETFLIX, TV/DVD player as well as a CD stereo player available. About Jan Dertzbaugh

Married in Washburn, WI, in 1974 and traveled to many different places while in the Army settling in Remington, VA (2004) with Bear (half lab and golden) and Daisy (Pound Puppy)! Jan is a highly successful domestic engineer and mother of Tim and Casey. John retired from the Army in 1995 and is still serving at PEO Soldier, Ft. Belvoir, VA. Jan and John enjoy fishing in both fresh and saltwater, being with our kids, and being of service to our Lord and Savior.

Jan Dertzbaugh purchased this cottage in 1995

Why Jan Dertzbaugh chose Luray

Sweetwater was love at first sight! We originally purchased it as a private retreat, but found that being able to show others the Virginia Outdoors and what a relaxing time was all about was extremely gratifying and decided to start sharing it with others . Life here moves at the speed of the river - very slowly! The river at Sweetwater washes away all the stresses associated with life in and around the National Capital region and rejuvenates the mind, body and soul as only the peace and solitude of the outdoors can.

What makes this cottage unique

Love sitting out along the river bank on a cool spring morning listening to the songs of the Baltimore Orioles or the owls hooting on a warm summer night while sleeping on the screened in porch. The peace and tranquility of floating down the river on a warm summers day while laying on an air mattress with my face submerged under water with mask and snorkel watching the river bottom and all the associated critters pass by. Or the joy of a “gourmet” smore cooked to perfection over a campfire while playing 4, 5, 6, and 12 stringed instruments and singing (or howling) with friends and family is one of life's greatest pleasures. Being rewarded with a nice bass as a result of a not so perfect cast. Finally, marveling at all of the wonders that surround you at Sweetwater and appreciating the beauty of God's creativity!

Quick family and fishing getaway

  • 5 of 5

My family and I just wrapped up our trip to Sweetwater today, and we were extremely sad to leave. The cottage is very well appointed, very clean, and offers incredible river access. The views from the water are stunning, with river bends in each direction at the foot of a mountain. The sun sets almost exactly over the peak of the mountain to the west. We had neighbors arrive on our second day, but privacy was never an issue, nor was noise.

We had rain through a good chunk of one of our days, but never grew bored. There are tons of games, the wi-fi was reliable and fast enough to have the TV and 2 iPads streaming simultaneously with limited picture quality interruption. The screened in porch is fabulous. We took practically every meal out there, and it offered our daughter a great deal of freedom to go inside and out without worry.

The kitchen was surprisingly well stocked. There are a plethora of pantry items at disposal, and it would seem most guests pay it forward with what they haven't used, be it paper goods, bottled water and every condiment under the sun.

The bedrooms were good sized and offered plenty of temporary storage. They also have the most amazing blankets. Each room has individual heat and air to control the climate in a flash.

The bathroom has a nice sized tube and the water pressure is good.

The large living area lets in an abundance of light and has a view of the river from anywhere. The leather chair under the books looks like any old chair, but is life altering when you sit down with a book, a cup of coffee and open up the french doors to the river in front of you.

We didn't utilize them, but there were canoes and all the supplies needed for a day on the water. I spent many hours in the water fishing. The water was typically ankle-to-knee deep in most spots, with a waist deep pocket here and there.

The owner, Jan, was a pleasure to work with. Extremely quick to respond, gave us all the information we needed, and otherwise let us be, which is perhaps the best thing of all.

Luray is a short drive away. We did not visit during our stay, but did so go on our way home. There are tons of places to eat, obviously the caverns, and a really nice little zoo full of rescue animals. This is also your nearest grocery store as far as I could tell.

This place was amazing for our family of 3. It delivered on everything we were looking for an then some.

Owner's Response: To the Kevin M family: Thank you so much for taking the time to write such an outstanding review!! Your review is something that Jan and I strive for and speaks to our goal of sharing what the good Lord has blessed us with and to bring people and family closer to Him as well as each other! I never get tired of the river views! With the distant Shenandoah Mountains down stream and the Massanuttens upstream, it is never dull or boring!! The constant changing of the seasons, plus the ever changing weather conditions always makes the mountain views exciting. The new porch and accompanying river view has been a big winner for us. We love sitting out on the porch in the morning with our coffee and a pair of binos watching the birds and, most recently, the Baltimore Orioles nesting along the river banks. Since John loves to cook, the kitchen is usually stocked with his favorite seasonings and we love to share that with our guests. We are so glad you enjoyed your stay and we look forward to hosting you again soon!!! Thanks again for your wonderful write-up! Blessings and best wishes for Love, Peace and Joy!!! Jan and John

Perfect cabin in a beautiful location

  • 5 of 5

We are a family of 3 with a small dog, and we had an amazing time here. Cabin is clean and exactly as described, and it has anything you could need. Location is secluded without being too isolated. We spent our time in the nearby Shenandoah Natl Park, canoeing on the river, and just relaxing in and around the cabin. Jan was responsive and easy to communicate with, and we would definitely stay here again.

Owner's Response: Thanks you so much for your wonderful review! It is amazing all the things you can do and see when visiting Sweetwater during the "winter months". Although there are more water activities to experience in the warm weather months, the cooler temperatures divert people in other directions that prove to yield equally rewarding experiences. We are so glad you and your family enjoyed themselves and look forward to hosting and showing you a good time in the warmer months!

A nice quiet weekend away from it all.

  • 4 of 5

The property is well maintained, with a variety of things to do. When it rains (It did some), we used the porch and the deck under it. And the entertainment center was well stock to keep the little ones from getting bored. Luray was just up the road with its small town charm, but had all of the amenities that we all expect all of the time And on the nice days, we canoed and kayaked the Shenandoah, and hiked the woods and trails in the area.

Pretty Cottage in Peaceful Setting on banks of the Shenandoah River

  • 5 of 5

This cottage is a perfect get away spot, and while hesistant to share the secret of this gem, I highly recommend without any reservations at all! The cottage itself is nicely decorated with a fishing theme, very clean, and well stocked (kitchen supplies, movie selection, star watching and bird watching books). It's location along the banks of the Shenandoah River offers endless opportunities for gazing at, and listening to the river running by. We enjoyed building a daytime and night time fire in the fire pit, and siting in comfortable rocking chairs around the fire. There is a very pretty, long deck attached to the cottage and facing the water. In addition, there are kayaks and canoes to use, and plenty of paths to walk on around the cottage. We chanced upon the owners, and they were very pleasant and attentive to their property. Oh, and we brought my little 11.5 Shih Tzu and he felt very comfortable here (they even have a mechanism to screw into ground by river to which you may attach a leash. Ziggy loved that). Final note: It was fun to drive by horse and cow farms and look at other cottages along the way to this property. This cottage is truly a gem.

A nice place to stay, easy owners to work with.

  • 4 of 5

We really loved this house, and it had plenty of space for my wife and myself. The kitchen was laid out well, and we could both work at the same time. While there is no cell phone coverage in the house, between the wifi and that the owners allow you to use the land line, this was not a problem at all.

The biggest struggle we had was the last road before the house. For about 2 miles, the gravel on the road is mostly stripped away, and is incredibly bumpy. We tried to make sure we never had to leave the house more than once per day. This probably isn't a big deal for SUVs and Trucks (who seemed to rip down the road), but for our tiny car, it was a hassle.

The other struggle, and this is no fault of the owners, is that GPS is just unreliable. On our way in, our GPS thought that there was a road over the mountain that the George Washington National Forest is on near the house. We know we weren't alone because we wound up stopping at a house, and the owner said that this happened all the time. So make sure you write or print out directions before you leave. Again, the owners were great and once we got service between where we were lost and the house, they helped us get back on track.

Again, the house itself was great, and the access to the owners DVD collection, games, canoes and kayaks was wonderful. The view of the river each morning as the fog lifted was fantastic to watch as we sat on the deck to eat breakfast. The owners really couldn't have been nicer. I would recommend this house to others who are looking for a quiet retreat with a wonderfully scenic view.

So Peaceful and Relaxing

  • 4 of 5

THANK YOU Jan and John! This house was great. It's off the beaten path, but so worth it. I loved roasting marshmallows over the open fire and just sitting there and watching the lazy river go by. I'm already planning a spring trip in my head. 😄

PS: For reference, pass Lorelei lane and turn right on Riverwater. We totally missed this in the directions. Also, you drive a couple of miles on a gravel road, so plan your vehicle choice accordingly.

Owner's Response: Jennifer: Thanks for your review and so glad you liked Sweetwater. We have spent a lot of quality family time at the fire pit right next to the river. It is a great place to decompress and create a couple of gourmet smores and listen to the water running over the ripples before bed time. Yep, the good new is that Sweetwater is off the beaten path. The bad news is that Sweetwater is off the beaten path. There is about 2 miles of country gravel road before you get to the cottage. If you miss the directions in our VRBO listing, you may have a "rougher" road getting to the cottage. Hope to see you again soon!!! John
