About Bruce Fine

I have lived in the mountains with my family for 12 years. Having spent a good bit of my adult life in cities like Los Angeles, Houston, and Miami, I can say with confidence that this is my family's last stop. This home sits at the crossroads of the Blue Ridge and Smoky Mountains, and there is no where else on earth that I've found that has the beauty, the peace and the restorative nature of this special place. My children are 19 and 15 and I feel blessed with the knowledge that they have grown up in a very unique and cultural rich environment. You'll feel the same way as well after just one week!!

Bruce Fine purchased this house in 2008

Why Bruce Fine chose Smoky Mountains

Balsam Mountain Preserve is unlike any mountain community I've ever seen. They all have beautiful views and picturesque settings, but living in Balsam is like living in a national forest. Most of the mountain can never be developed because it's in a conversation trust, so there is a sense of peace and a connection with nature that is real. The 24 hour manned security is also a plus. Balsam feels secluded, but it's really just ten minutes from Waynesville and Sylva. Both towns offer a huge variety of shopping, dining, and entertainment options. Asheville is only 40 minutes away. Finally, the access to Balsam is hard to beat. It's located just off the Great Smoky Mountain Expressway, so it's literally a four-lane drive from anywhere - no 2-lane twisty mountain roads to maneuver to get here. It's easier to get to than any mountain location I've ever seen.

What makes this house unique

Balsam is a private community with 24 hour onsite security, a fully staffed Nature Center and over thirty miles of private hiking trails that wind across streams and waterfalls throughout the property, some reaching elevations as high as 5,400 feet. The trail system is truly amazing! My wife and kids love to get outdoors and have all-day adventures on the trails with peace of mind, knowing they are inside a private community. One of the trails leads to a private campground inside Balsam that has outdoor grills, a trout stream, a covered Pavilion, and camping sites. One of my kids' favorite spots!! There is also a Nature Center at Balsam staffed by full-time trained and educated naturalists, an experience not to be missed. Make sure you check out the live Birds of Prey program, which includes a close-up look at a beautiful Bald Eagle. The Nature Center is a real treat for young and old alike.

Absolutely perfect stay! beautiful home and breathtaking views!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I just returned from a week at this home, and I absolutely did not want to leave. It was perfect. The preserve was beautiful. The home was secluded with breathtaking views from every window. The patio was our favorite. The weather was perfect, and the view of the trees and the mountians was almost surreal. The TV above the fireplace was a nice touch. We could enjoy being outside and unwinding for a busy day of shopping or sightseeing in the numerous towns that are within a few minutes drive. I really liked the French Doors which open from the living room, and kitchen onto the patio dining area. The separate living areas were nice as well. My mother-in-law stayed with us a few days, and she had the entire bottom floor to herself. We can be pretty active. She enjoyed having a place to get away and relax. The owner is extremely welcoming and helpful. We are returning in the fall. (It was the only way my husband could get me to leave) Everything about this home was 5 stars..... Absolutely perfect!

Owner's Response: Shannon, thanks so much for your review and for booking another visit to the home later this year before you even checked out! That is very gratifying and confirms for us that we are doing things the right way. Look forward to having you back in October.

beautiful home, clean, unique, comfortable

  • 4 of 5

Loved out stay. I didn't realize we would have access to the pool, tennis courts, and golf. Make sure you eat at the Boarding House at the top! The hot tub needed cleaning and then did not heat and could not be fixed while we were there.(That is the reason for only 4 stars) Unfortunate but it did not ruin our stay. Loved the screened in porch and spent most of out time in front of a morning and evening fire. Top quality home and would highly recommend.

Owner's Response: Susan, Thanks very much for your review, it was a pleasure to have your family as guests. The hot tub was cleaned and the heat pump was replaced just prior to your arrival but unfortuneatly the technician did not repair it properly. My apologies for the inconvenience. As for the Club amenities, as a rule, guests of this home do not have access to them. The General Manager has the discretion to offer access on a case-by-case basis and that's what happened for you. Glad you had a great time!

Beautiful Mountain Home filled with comfortable furnishings and beautiful artwork. The views of the Blue Ridge Mountains is breathtaking and every day's sunrise and sunset brought a different scenery to life. Our family enjoyed all aspects of our stay and the kitchen was well stocked for meal preparation. Thank you for this incredible opportunity to spend Thanksgiving in the Mountains! We will be back!!

Beautiful home with loads of privacy!

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time at this beautiful mountain home! Bruce was wonderful to work with - very responsive and informative. The home itself was welcoming and grand at the same time. The screened in porch with outdoor fireplace, seating area and dining table was fabulous. We spent a lot of time out there enjoying the nice breezes and wonderful view. Making s'mores in the evening was a treat. The home was well appointed and decorated with tasteful artwork and furniture, while still feeling very comfortable. The master suite was huge! Plenty of room to relax. It was nice to have bathrooms for every bedroom. Everyone had their own space in the house, while still enjoying the common areas together. The sun greeted us every morning through the large back windows of the house - no window treatments on them brought the outdoors inside, which was a nice touch. Michael at the Nature Center on property was awesome! He spent time educating us about snakes and other local "neighbors" - he even gave us a mini birds of prey encounter with one of the hawks at the center. Hope, the bald eagle, was also amazing. Highly suggest stopping in to check it out. We also ventured to the Nantahala Outdoor Center (NOC) for flat water kayaking - approx. 35 minutes from the front gates. Mike was our guide and he was excellent. Highly recommend going there, if only to people watch. Walked around downtown Sylva - some cute shops and cafes. Just remember that small downtown area shops close early, so give yourself enough time to explore. Overall, we had a great mountain vacation! I would recommend this house to anyone looking to get away from it all, while still having ammenities not far away.

Family Vacation in the NC Moutains

  • 5 of 5

The house is truly gorgeous in a beautiful part of the country. It is conveniently located near both the towns of Sylva and Waynesville so that was very nice to have. The Food Lion in Sylva is very nice and very well stocked. The house is absolutely gorgeous and spotless. Professionally decorated, it is very large with plenty of space for everyone. The master suite is gigantic. The views are great from the porch and all of the bedrooms. Kitchen is well equipped and and all the linens and towels are high quality. The house has everything you need. The hot tub is great and very well maintained The drive up from the main road is steep and curvy and partly on gravel but it was no problem for any car. The bedrooms are very bright in the morning so if you want to sleep late, keep that in mind. A truly gorgeous home worth every rental dollar.
