We love everything about the area, a beautiful mountain lake, tons of outdoor activities, shopping and close to Asheville, Morganton and Black Mountain.
We stayed here for a week at the end of June and had a wonderful time. The house is spacious, well maintained, clean and has famtastic views of Lake James and the mountains. We ate every meal out on the deck so that we could enjoy the views - although the lake side of the house is all floor to ceiling windows so you could enjoy the views from inside as well. We don't own a boat so we explored the area and found Black Mountain (lovely mountain town, golf) and Catawba Falls (good hike to waterfalls) to be about 1/2 hour away, Asheville is about 45 minutes away. The homeowner let us use his kayaks which were great fun for all. As far as the stairs to the lake are concerned - forewarned is forearmed. They are steep and long but we all managed to get up and down several times a day, some of us stopping to catch our breath more often than others! I think to make the very most of your vacation at this home it would be good to either have your own boat or make arrangements to rent a boat through the homeowner or perhaps at the marina. The homeowner was very easy to work with and provided lots of brochures, maps and other helpful info at the house to ease in exploring the area. We highly recommend this rental.
Celebrated my 50th Birthday here with small family group and had a wonderful time! House is beautiful, clean and comfortable and lake is clear, deep and quiet. So enjoyed breakfast on deck with breathtaking mountain views followed by afternoons of tubing, wake boarding and skiing with our boat. Dock for boat and our kayaks was super convenient, if a bit of a steep hike! A great place to stay to enjoy the lake, nearby state park with hike/bike trails and short distance from Asheville.
Our family of 4 and visitong parents enjoyed staying here over the week of July 4th. We brought our boat and had a great time skiing, tubing and touring Lake James. The house was beautiful, clean and in a great location near Marion and directly across the lake from a new marina (3 minutes by boat) with a good restaurant. The descent to the boat dock is very steep, but our parents who suffer from bad backs (multiple surgeries) and rheumatoid arthritis were able to make the trip multiple times per day.
The dock is ideally located on deep water near the ski course.
We got to experience a great fireworks show on the lake on July 4th.
We hope to travel back there soon!
Our early fall week at Lake James was perfect. It was unusually warm so we were able to tour the Lake by boat. The leaves were just beginning to change color, so our drive to Linville falls and back along the parkway was beautiful. We chose the house for the views and the beauty of the house itself. The property exceeded our expectations in both regards. The description and photos are helpful, but the experience itself was even better. The home was extremely clean and well-maintained, the owner helpful, and it was altogether a wonderful rental. The steps to the lake that have been mentioned in previous reviews are important to consider if elderly individuals or small children are in your party. But we found them to be good exercise. We highly recommend this property and hope to return.
Our family of five enjoyed a terrific stay in this home. The owner was reliable and flexible. The layout is ideal either for a family with teenagers or multiple families with the upstairs/downstairs. Everything was clean and up to date. The porch was absolutely perfect for morning coffee or an evening glass of wine. The gated community added extra security.
Boating on this lake is perfect as there are many quiet coves and beautiful views of the nearby mountains. The new marina is conveniently located right across from the dock. The stairs could be an issue if you have tired legs and want to frequent the dock. We went up/down a few times daily and even made a game of it to time ourselves on how fast we could do it. I guess it is all in the perspective.
The only downside if you are looking for one is there are no upscale restaurants within a short drive. Fortunately, the place is close enough to visit Biltmore for the day where we enjoyed wonderful meals. There is a good size gas grill where we grilled steaks so plan ahead and enjoy dinner in. Overall an excellent choice!
This home is in a beautiful gated neighborhood. We all felt that its location was probably the best on the entire lake. The 4 bedroom, 4 bath, 2 upstairs and 2 down, was the perfect layout for our gathering of 4 adults and 5 kids. The kids enjoyed the pingpong table every evening while the adults hung out on the deck to enjoy the clean air and incredible views. Hint: keep the lights off at night and the bugs will never bother you. If you haven't been to Lake James before and are looking for a mountain lake, this is the place to be. This lake does not restrict boating or jet skiing as many lakes do. It is very large yet not at all crowded. The mountain views are incredible and the area has tons of activities to offer. I did at least 40 hours of research to find the perfect lake and perfect house for my family of 5 and my sisters family of 4. Save yourself the time and go here! My goal was to find a mountain lake home on a very clean lake that offered privacy, boating, horseback riding, zip lining, hiking. This has it all. We also went to the Biltmore Estate, drove up route 226, awesome drive, to Little Switzerland (have dinner at the Mountain View restaurant!) and went to a Mine near Little Switzerland,(you'll see the signs). I'm sure you've read others reviews that mention the steps (142) down to the lake. They are a bear but without them you'd never get the incredible view this home offers. We were fortunate enough to talk the very accommodating and helpful owner into letting us rent his boat for the week. It's a really nice ski/wake boarding boat that we used everyday. Our kids ages 10-15 loved tubing behind the boat more than any other activity we did. We will, with out a doubt, be back hopefully ever year.
