Come stay in our beautiful farmhouse in the lovely Fulford Valley, nestled between Mount Maxwell and Mount Bruce on 5 acres of farmland and forest. Family friendly and quiet, we have a fully equipped kitchen and a huge private backyard to listen to the birds. We're located steps from the lovely Salt Spring Island Brewery and have walking trails down to Burgoyne Bay park. Our property also has a duck and several chickens! Our place is perfect for children – just let us know if you would like us to set up a travel cot, highchair, change table or potty, and toys (we also have safety gates installed). We're surrounded by birds, flowers and lots of trees. It's the perfect peaceful retreat in both summer and winter.
You are welcome to use the yard, wander through the fields, or explore our forest. Please don't enter the chicken area without your hosts, but if you would like to say hi to them, come knock on our door! Our family lives in the front side of the house (separate access and everything) and we're pretty friendly! If you have children, you're welcome to use the sandbox and slide with parental supervision. We don't guarantee the backyard is 100% free of nettles but we do our absolute best!
We respect your privacy so we provide all our guests with fresh chicken eggs as well as other local breakfast ingredients for you to prepare. We also bake fresh sourdough for our guests when time (and our toddler!) permits. The water from the tap is safe to drink as it comes directly from the spring at the top of the mountain and then goes through both a particle filter and UV filter. It's the best water we've ever tasted!
Our family lives in the adjoining house, so we're available to help with anything you need, but do ask you stick to quiet times to respect our peace and quiet. We also have a large, very friendly puppy. You're welcome to interact with him if you would like, but you don't have to!
Please note that the bathroom is located on the second floor, up a set of stairs, and through the master bedroom, so the space is not suitable for those that cannot use stairs.
Our property is not impacted by the new short term rental rules in BC, due to our location on Salt Spring Island. However we do meet the requirements it sets, out of respect for it, as the space shares a roof with our primary residence (and we serve an a la carte continental breakfast as we are a bed and breakfast).
Pets: We generally do not accept pets due to the livestock on our property, however if you have a very well behaved animal, please reach out to us and ask – we assess on a case-by-case basis. Please note that we do charge a pet cleaning fee as we must do an extra deep clean to ensure the space is fur-free for the next guests.
Our prices include all fees. No hidden fees.

We had a lovely stay at Nettledown. Our toddler had a great time saying hello to our hosts’ dog, duck, and chickens every morning, and playing in the yard. The accommodations were cozy and a short drive to the beaches and Ganges. Serene was very accommodating and responsive. Highly recommend a stay!
This was a great spot! Beautiful place with everything you need, especially if you have kids. They had it all: highchair, changing table, cot, toys….. plus eggs! We had a great stay and will definitely come back.
Great place for my family of four to spend a couple days on the island. Convenient location between Fulford and Ganges. And, as a bonus, a (very) short walk to the brewery. Eggs and bread were a tasty breakfast. Would stay here again.
Like staying with family. Our 7 year-old spent most of her free time playing with the host’s very friendly dog and shared their son’s sandbox with him. Very quiet location. Great access to Burgoyne Bay trails.
We enjoyed our stay at Nettledown. Serene met us at the driveway and gave us a brief run down of what we needed to know. She responded promptly to all questions. She baked an amazing loaf of homemade sourdough bread and provided farm fresh eggs for breakfast. The home is in a very quiet rural area between two ferry terminals, an easy 30 minute walk to a beautiful pebbly beach, and easy access to everything the Island provides.
We had a lovely time staying at the farm over new years. Freshly baked sourdough and eggs from chickens in the morning was such a treat!! Great communication and easy to settle in - definitely recommend for a warm comfy stay on Salt Spring!
Very relaxing. Wonderful location. Quiet. Really enjoyed the good coffee and sour dough bread for breakfast. The chickens, duck and (big) puppy were like family and made us feel right at home
This place was so quaint and comfortable. The hosts were lovely and the check-in process was very smooth. We had lots of fun exploring the area with our 7 year old, watching the chickens, duck and rabbits. The place was clean, with plenty of bedding and the fans were much appreciated with how hot it was! Would definitely recommend this place for families with small children, there were lots of games, books and toys for younger kids, as even for really young kids they had stuff stored like a high chair, cot, toys for littles, and baby gates! What a beautiful space, thanks so much for hosting us!
This property is beautiful, the space is clean and comfortable, and the sourdough and fresh eggs were delicious! All of these things would be enough to give this charming home a 5 star rating, but Serene and Rodolfo themselves bring this home to the next level. I have never met such charming and welcoming hosts! Thank you Serene and Rodolfo, your kindness made our visit.
P.S. we love Balu!
I was born in Vancouver but have been lucky enough to live all over the world, and my husband is from Mexico. We love hosting because we love meeting new people, hearing their stories, and sharing our beautiful island with them. We love being outside, watching things grow, biking around the neighbourhood, and learning all about farm life.
Why they chose this property
My husband and I moved to Salt Spring to find a safe, community-minded place to raise our son with lots of trees, open space, and animals. We chose the Fulford Valley as we think it is one of the best parts of the island – close to the mountains, the bay, and enough space to raise animals (and little humans!). It feels like a rural paradise, but it's only 5 minutes to the ferry and 15 minutes to town.
What makes this property unique
Our property was originally built in the 70s and has a lot of character as a result. From handcrafted hardwood flooring in some sections to warm cedar panelling and open, light-filled lofts, our home feels like a cozy farmhouse – but with more space! We are also uniquely situated on our property with a large open field in front (for the best view of the mountains) and then our property runs all the way up the forested mountain behind us until it meets up with the provincial park. We've planted several gardens since arriving and fully fenced the yard to keep little ones from getting into trouble!
