Kiahuna Plantation is a low density beach front Condo Resort, the only one on sunny Poipu Beach. Contact owner for best price at 562-691-3643. FREE Wi-FI & Internet connection. The use of the pool, tennis and the Fitness Center at the POIPU BEACH ATHLETIC CLUB are also FREE for our guests. If you book with or through OUTRIGGER, you probably won't have FREE ACCESS to the new POIPU BEACH ATHLETIC CLUB.

New Legislation. Starting July 1, 2012, a new law HB 2078 regarding rental properties has been in effect. This law requires out of-state owners, like us, to post our local agent, Roy Thompson, 808-742-2200, and our Hawaiian Transient Accommodations Registration No. W40955782-01.

Volker & Regina Bauerle, the owners of the 2-BR, 2-BA Condo, will handle all the booking by phone 562-691-3643. A superior Management Company with an office at the Kiahuna Plantation manages our unit.

Nestled within 35 acres of lush lawns and tropical gardens are plantation style buildings, no higher than a palm tree. Our unit is open and airy due to large sliding doors and windows with louvers that open to catch the cooling Hawaiian trade winds.

The master bedroom on the first floor features a King Bed, 2 night stands, a separate dressing room and full bath with tub. The master bath has been completely renovated. A dresser - with a TV on top - and 2 large closets are provided for your clothes including a safe for valuables. A 6' sliding door leads to your private lanai with 2 lounges and a chair & table where you can relax with a good book and listen to the birds sing. New Island Shutters have been installed in the master bedroom for your privacy.

Our 2nd bedroom has 2 single beds, a night stand, a large dresser and a closet. The guest bathroom, which has been totally renovated is off the hall featuring a large enclosed shower, with a sink inside a cabinet with a granite top.

On the 2nd. floor, the living/dining room (great room) is spacious (20' x 24'). The full-service kitchen was recently updated with new cabinets, a stove, microwave dishwasher and refrigerator. Even a small oven is provided for warming up bread, or making toast. An electric coffee machine, mixer to make your tropical drinks & smoothies, and all the dishes, pots and utensils you need are provided. Next to the kitchen is the dining area with a glass top table and 6 chairs.

Two people can sleep on the pull-out couch in the living room, which has been re-upholstered. A 42” LCD TV sits on top of a dresser with FREE cable provided, including FREE Internet service for your computer. The drapes in the great room have been replaced recently with off-white Island Shutters.

Your private balcony is right outside the living room, where you can - if you like - eat most of your meals, like we do, to save money. We usually shop at Costco in Lihue. They have a large variety of fish, sushi & sashimi, appetizers, and ready-made meals, including wines & spirits available. The Lihue Costco features more products than our local Costco in California. There is ample room for 6 people to eat, using the round table & chairs on the balcony. In addition, you can also relax on a lounging chair and sip your favorite drink while watching the colorful birds in the huge, 100-year-old monkey-pod tree facing the balcony. We especially like the red-crested cardinals. They'll eat right out of your hands.

Recently, the entry and the kitchen tiles have been replaced with 16'x16' tiles, installed in a diamond pattern.

A new barbeque below our property will help you get quick, cost-efficient meals on your table. Even a hamburger or hot dog tastes better from the BBQ at the Kiahuna Plantation than at home.

However, if you prefer eating out and you don't want to drive, here are some of your choices: The Plantation Gardens Restaurant is right around the corner from our building. Across the street at the Kiahuna Shopping Center are several places to eat. A favorite with guests is Keoki's Paradise with open air dining. Across from Keoki's, a new restaurant -- THE OLYMIC CAFE – has opened in February 2016. They occupy the spot where Roy's Poipu Bar & Grill was located. Roy's moved to the new Kukui'ula Center, 1 mile west from our condo. The new restaurant is named EATING HOUSE 1849. Or you can eat at The Bangkok Happy Bowl, located on the NE corner of the Poipu Shopping Village. Next to them is a stand, where you can eat a Puka Dog with a choice of unusual toppings.

One of the newest additions for fine dining is a mile west of our complex at the Kukui'ula Village in Koloa. Merriman's is good, but pricy. Our favorite for special occasions is Josselin's Bar & Grill, right across from Merriman's. Jean Marie Josselin used to be the owner/chef of A Pacific Cafe in Kapaa, possibly the best restaurant in Hawaii. Unfortunately, it closed a few years ago. We were pleasantly surprised when our favorite chef opened his new restaurant in 2010. You got to try the Lychee Sangria. It is out of this world, made with white wine (not red like your typical sangria) plus secret ingredients. One of the staff members gave us the recipe for this killer drink. We now serve it at our home to special guests. Everybody raves about it.

If you like Mexican food, the Kukui'ula Village recently opened a restaurant, the Tortilla Republic Grill & Margarita Bar, that takes care of your cravings. Our grandson and fiancée told us that the food and atmosphere is better than at Mexican restaurants in California.

Around the Kiahuna Plantation property you find a multitude of beautiful blossoms and colorful foliage. Take in the aromas of sweet plumerias, orchids and hibiscus. Watch the palms gracefully swaying in the breeze, and find flowers, trees and shrubs you may have never seen before.

The Moir Cactus Garden is another spectacular attraction on the resort grounds, created almost 80 years ago. You'll discover that this Condo Resort is so much more relaxing than similar places on Oahu and Maui with their hustle and bustle.

A short walk from our condo will lead you to the best swimming beach on Kauai. Feel the warm white sand sift through your toes as the Hawaiian sun embraces you. Gaze at the brilliant blue waters of Poipu Beach and watch as the sunrays dance on the waves. You can go surfing, boogie-boarding, snorkeling, sunbathing, or reading a good book under a palm tree in the vast lawn facing the ocean. Free towels and beach chairs are provided at the Beach Hut for our guests. Surf-and boogie boards are available for rental. Surf lessons are also available.

The famous Poipu Bay Golf Course, former site of the annual Grand Slam tournament, is 2 miles east, next to the Hyatt Poipu Hotel. The Kiahuna Golf Course is just north of our property. Other great golf courses are nearby. As one of our guests we'll reveal the name and location of a little-known golf course where you can play for less than $30. If you're interested, just ask us.

Many other fun things, like horseback riding, scuba diving, windsurfing, etc. are available close-by. If you like hiking, we can help you find the perfect trails. You can reach the Waimea Canyon in about one hour by car. Mark Twain called it 'The Grand Canyon of the Pacific.'

About Volker Bauerle

My wife Gina and I love to travel to exotic destinations. We've visited Tahiti and neighboring islands 7 times, and the Fijian islands 3 times. We also took cruises in the South Pacific, Mexico, Caribbean, Mediterranean, and Scandinavian countries including Russia.

We've been in Oahu, Maui and the Big Island, but avoided Kauai because we heard it is the wettest spot on earth. However, once we found out that the Poipu Beach area only gets about 35 inches a year, we booked a trip. When we discovered Kiahuna Plantation, we knew that this 'Special Place' was our own personal Paradise.

We've been operating our own Carpet & Interior Store since 1963. At times it was so hectic, the only thing to keep us from going out of our mind was our condo in Kauai. A couple of weeks at this healing island (people call it the Garden Island and Healing Island) helped recharge our batteries.

In 1987 we got tired of selling the same old regular carpets. That's when we developed a system to create one-of-a-kind carpets matching each client's decor. Home-and business owners loved it.

In 1991 we opened a hands-on workshop to teach our secret craft to entrepreneurs from the US, Canada, Singapore, the UK & Ireland, Saudi Arabia... Over 600 individuals were trained and they now operate their own business offering custom carpets in their areas.

Most of our annual conventions were conducted at the Kiahuna Plantation. Our Affiliates just loved this wonderful place, almost as much as us.

Daily we enjoy our 4-5 minute walk to Poipu Beach. We find a shady spot under a palm tree in the lush lawn facing the ocean and read a book.

Besides playing tennis or reading a good book, swimming & snorkeling are one of our favorite things to do. We also enjoy longer hikes up in the mountains, or along the beach. Grilling local fresh fish or meat on the BBQ below our property is more satisfying to us than spending a lot of money at restaurants.

Why Volker Bauerle chose Poipu

Our first visit to Kiahuna Plantation was in August 1980. A friend raved about this 'Special Place' (translation of 'Kiahuna') because of its beautifully landscaped property and the spectacular Tennis Club. That's exactly what we were looking for.

You see, my wife Gina's brother, sister-in-law and their son visited us from Germany, And since their son Wolfi Leitner, was the Bavarian Junior Tennis Champion (later to be selected to the German Junior Davis Cup with Boris Becker, Michael Stich...), we wanted to treat our guests to the finest.

On first sight we fell in love with this low-key condo complex. Everybody enjoyed this special vacation...and the accommodations, the tennis, beach and the tranquility of the island made it especially memorable.

My wife and I returned 3 years later. That's when we found out that the condos were individually owned.

In January 1985 we bought unit #223 and never regretted it. Ron, our oldest son, celebrated his 30th. and 40th. birthday, together with his family. Our oldest granddaughter Cassidy, who was 2 years old when visiting for the 1st. time, spent her honeymoon with husband Ben at Kiahuna. Brothers Chase & Clay, surfed many times on Poipu Beach. Our son Ray with wife and twin girls Rachel & Robin from Houston, TX were here as well. Robert, our youngest, knows Kiahuna inside and out.

Sepp & Christa from Munich enjoyed two additional vacations with us. My sisters Dagmar & Sigrid from Stuttgart, Germany visited us while I celebrated my 50th. birthday. Marty, my brother and family love to join us in Kauai as often as possible. Many friends from California vacationed with us here and had a wonderful time.

Gina and I usually visit Kiahuna twice a year, in May and October. We've been asked: 'Don't you get tired of this place?' Our answer is 'No, we still discover new places to hang out, new hikes, waterfalls, etc.' Kiahuna Plantation is our home away from home and we can hardly wait to visit again.

What makes this condo unique

It's a short walk to Poipu Beach and to the new POIPU BEACH ATHLETIC CLUB (POOL, TENNIS & FITNESS CENTER), because our condo is right in the middle of the property. 5 restaurants can be reached by foot within 5 minutes. A Whaler's store is across the street for buying groceries, including a large selection of wines & spirits, T-shirts, sweaters, postcards, calenders & gifts. Starbucks is across the street as well, to take care of your caffeine cravings.

Less than a mile is the new Kukui'ula Center with little shops and several restaurants. The choices range from hamburgers & hot dogs at Bubba's, to quality Mexican food, to organic, to upscale at Merryman's, to our favorite -- Josselin's Bar & Grill, specializing in 'Tapas' and 'Lychee Sangria.' You can also find a seafood restaurant that opened in October 2012...

Old Town Koloa is a couple of miles away with its quaint shops, markets and restaurants.

Less than a mile from our condo you can learn how to scuba dive and get licensed.

Beautiful grounds and very spacious condo.

Next time you probably need to book a unit at a different property because all 2-bedroom, 2-baths condos at the Kiahuna Plantation are on 2 floors. The bedrooms, baths and lanai are on the lower floor, the living-room, dining-room, kitchen and the balcony are upstairs, for a total of 1,584 sq.ft. Most of our guests prefer this layout. They are also grateful that the Poipu Beach Athletic Club -- where the pool, tennis courts and Fitness Center are located -- is away from all condos, so there is no noise from kids and teenagers playing "Marco Polo" and other games in the pool. One reason our condo is so popular is: It is centrally located where you can walk to the beach and the Poipu Beach Athletic Club in about 5 minutes. Best regards, Volker & Gina Bauerle

Perfect for families

This property was perfect for our family, our 2 year old and 5 mo old. It is close to the beach and to the Sheraton bakery which my son loved. You can walk to the pool and he spent most of his time on the water slide. No fault of the owner, it is pretty hot in the unit at night. They provide lots of fans and that helps but if there isn't a breeze at night it is pretty hot.

The unit is not luxury, if you are looking for that this is probably not the place, but for young families and the price it is great.

Owner's Response: Dear Geoff, thank you for your review. Usually the trade-winds and the ceiling and portable fans we supply are sufficient to cool down each room. However, sometimes the trade-winds stop for a short time in summer/fall where guests may feel uncomfortable. A cold shower, or a quick dip in the ocean has helped us to cool off. Our 1,584 sq.ft. 2-BR, 2-BA condo is suited for guests with or without children who appreciate the spaciousness of our 2nd. home and the low nightly rate, which is a rare combination. When we first vacationed at the Kiahuna Plantation in 1980, we fell in love with the low-density buildings, no higher than a palm tree. Most of all, we liked the feel of the Old Hawaiian way of life. There was no annoying air-conditioning, and the Plantation Style furnishings made us feel like we were living in the good old days. Luxury furnishings don't fit the Kiahuna Plantation. Our wicker furniture and other items represent the traditional Hawaiian look we are trying to preserve. If you want to spend your vacation at a luxurious place, you may be better served at one of the hotels nearby, where nightly room rates are close to twice the amount we charge for our 2nd. home. So--if you are searching for a condo with a large living-room and dining-room, full kitchen, 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms that rents for considerably less than most hotel rooms, our 2nd. home may be just right for you. Once you experience the laid-back Hawaiian lifestyle, you may agree with 48 out of 50 guests -- who sent their unsolicited testimonials to vrbo/HomeAway -- that our condo is the Best Value on Poipu Beach.

Great town on beautiful beach and wonderful beach club especially when traveling with kids

Overall the stay was great! The grounds were beautiful and it was super easy to get to from the airport. The beach access/hut with towels and chairs was great. The condo had some boogie boards for the kids and an umbrella for the beach which was essential because there is not much shade at poipu. The condo was clean and mostly updated but the carpeting throughout was very dated feeling. The living room furniture was wicker and not very comfortable for lounging. The kitchen was pretty well equipped although the cutlery was super dull and hard to cook with and it would have been nice to at least have some basic cooking items like oil and vinegar in addition to Tupperware to store leftovers. I'd say my biggest complaint was the Sprinkler system on the property that woke me every morning at 4:45 and then repeated 2 more times within an hour or so. There is no AC which was totally fine since they were very well equipped with fans and the breeze was amazing but there was no option to drown out the noise from outside. The unit is also the back of the property so it was about 30 yards to the main road which also added some morning road noise. The master bedroom was on the far side of the unit but with all the windows open you could still hear some Road noise. I'm super sensitive to noise in general so it's possible you wouldn't notice. My husband who is not that sensitive didn't get bothered by road noise but did wake up startled by the sprinkler the first few mornings until he got used to it. It was nice that the bedrooms are on the lower level of the unit so there is no noise issue with upstairs neighbors. The poipu beach club across the st was incredible and the highlight for the kids. It was super relaxed with a very fun pool (with slide) and access to a gym, exercise classes, tennis courts and many more fun games. We were very thankful this existed because in the summer the ocean on poipu beach is much rougher than in winter time. The waves were quite large and a bit intense for children under the age of 6. Apparently the waves are intense on the south side of the Island in the summer and the north end of the island is a bit calmer and then it flips the rest of the year. My 9 year old was fine but our 6 year old definitely needed close supervision in the ocean( there is no lifeguard at the beach at the condo complex) Overall we loved Kiahuna and poipu beach!

Owner's Response: Aloha Lauren, and thank you for your views about your vacation at our 2nd. home. Since we live in Southern California, we are not able to supply condiments at our condo. That's why we advise our guests to bring some of their own, so they don't have to buy them at the market across the street, or at other super markets. Regarding articles to store left-overs, in the kitchen cabinets are several jars in different sizes that can be used for that. Nobody so far has complained about the cutlery and we had no problems 4 months ago during our last visit. Our wicker furniture may not be the most comfortable, but it represents the traditional Hawaiian look we try to preserve. Over the years we've replaced the carpet throughout the condo 5-times. It was mainly residential carpet, but they didn't last. The current carpet is a commercial, multi-colored carpet suitable for rentals to families with small children. And since we rent our 2-BR, 2-BA unit to families with small children where accidental spills happen, we have to be practical. Our carpets get professionally cleaned 2-3 times a year, which is costly in Kauai. It is even more costly to replace 125 sq. yds. of carpet numerous times. Since our replacement costs have to be figured into our nightly rates, we try to keep these costs at a level where we don't have to raise our rates considerably. We realize that our condo is not in the luxury level, but our rental rates reflect this. For comparison, a single 300 sq.ft, 1-bath room at a hotel close-by rents for more than our 1,584 sq.ft. 2-bedroom, 2-baths condo that includes a lanai outside the master bedroom and a balcony upstairs. Regarding the noise factor, since each room features overhead fans PLUS additional, portable fans, the louver windows can be closed to block out noises. No place is perfect for everybody, but 48 out of 50 guests -- who sent their unsolicited testimonials to -- have rated their experience at our 2nd. home a perfect 5. Many previous guests who loved spending their vacation in our condo have returned for a 2nd. and 3rd. time. Sorry, Lauren that you don't agree with the majority of our other guests who are convinced that our 2nd. home is the best value in the Poipu Beach area. Maybe next time you are planning a vacation in Kauai, you may be better served to book a luxury condo where you pay double to triple the nightly rate you paid at our 2nd. home.

Kiahuna Plantation is the only condo resort on the south side of the island that has its own beach at Poipu Beach. Swimming, snorkling, surfing, paddle boarding, or just relaxing on the big lawn with a good book, facing the ocean are some of the attractions that travelers enjoy. Nearby is a diving school where you can get certified. On the premises is a restaurant and 4 more across the street from Kiahuna Plantation. Unlike other places, tennis is FREE for our guests. Our pool, next to the tennis courts, is also open again since December 23, 2013. In addition, a new Fitness Center has been added to be enjoyed by our guests -- AT NO COST -- in the newly named POIPU BEACH ATHLETIC CLUB.
