About The Owner

'Singing Sands' in Arch Cape, Six Miles South of Cannon Beach, OR

In 1929, my great aunts, Elsie and Marie English, bought the Arch Cape Hotel and re-named it 'Singing Sands.' Family stories tell us it had been used by fur trappers and postmen.

Elsie and Marie came down from Seattle in the summers and provided room, board, and beach fun to relatives and paying guests. Highway 101 did not reach Arch Cape at that time, so they had to drive on the beach at low tide.

After Elsie and Marie retired from their teaching and school administration professions and moved to 'Singing Sands' permanently, they found it uncomfortable for winter living. Around 1955, the old 'Singing Sands' was torn down, and a new 'Singing Sands' was built, which I inherited in 1979.

The present 'Singing Sands' contains original furniture and happy memories. It is on an ocean front lot with easy beach access. There is a view of the famous Castle Rock, about one mile out to sea.

'Singing Sands' sleeps six. A single bedroom is located on the first floor with two twin beds and a bathroom with a handicap-accessible shower. Upstairs are two bedrooms, one with a queen-sized bed and another with twin beds. This bathroom has a tub. Each bedroom has a view of the ocean.

The living room has a fire place (wood is provided), and the fully equipped kitchen was recently remodeled. Both rooms have ocean views.

The Owner purchased this house in 1955

Ideal location for those of us who prefer a mostly empty beach

  • 5 of 5

All three bedrooms had great light, loved the Dutch door to keep the dog in while enjoying the sound of the surf. Easy kitchen for cooking and great fireplace.

Definitely a place for coming back as beach access easy too.

Perfect place for us!

  • 5 of 5

This was our 5th time staying at Singing Sands. We love the Arch Cape beach and this house has become our favorite. Being able to get to the beach right from the front yard is great especially when you have young kids. The house itself is lovely. It is as if you went back to the 60's, in an authentic way. The covered patio is great, there is a mud/laundry room and ocean views from every bedroom. We also appreciate the twin beds in 2 of the rooms for friends or siblings that don't want to share a bed. All around a very special place!

What a wonderful house!!!

  • 5 of 5

The views! The beach (not crowded)!!! The rooms! I didn't want to go home! This place is gorgeous, it's like I stepped back in time into a beautiful house. The decor is very retro but not tacky. I loved that we had 2 bathrooms. I do wish the master bedroom was downstairs, but who can be picky with such a beautiful place really? I loved the 100 year + old jade plant. The couch in front of the huge windows over looking the beach was a joy to relax on. There were towels a plenty (and not gross old ones either). The washer/dyer with detergent was a lifesaver since our teenage son only pack 1 pair of pants lol. Poor kid jumped into the ocean and it suddenly dawned on me he probably didn't pack appropriately, his face was priceless when he realized his mistake.

We had everything we needed to cook a hearty meal. I just wish I had brought ingredients to bake cookies as you could smell that someone has baked many batches full of love in the house. The whole vibe in the house was so loving and positive, I can't wait to return. We were pleased that the dishwasher was fixed on our second nights stay (these things happen with any house, but it was fixed so timely). I did notice that the garage door opener is a bit finicky, you can't close it all the way, but every house has it's quirks.

It was a joy to chat with a retired fisherman who told us stories on the beach about the history of the town and the place we stayed. He even gave us tips on going to the left of the bend at the beach at low tide to see the "arch cape" that gives the name of the beach we were on. I really wish we were evening/night owls as we had clear nights and the fire pit just beyond the back yard would've been lovely to have a cup of tea while watching the stars.

I can't wait to return! This house has the pride of ownership and the love of family embedded into it.
