Ship’s Light has looked down Cross Street to Chatham Village Center for more than 180 years. Built and occupied by some of Chatham’s most eminent residents since 1825, it was converted to four housekeeping apartments for summer visitors circa 1945. Lovingly restored by long-time current owners, this gracious antique home offers modern comfort and convenience with the character and charm of a bygone era.
The 'Lillian Spohn' apartment is on the 2nd floor and has 3 rooms with a flexible layout--perfect for a couple or a family of three vacationing on a budget. Accomodates 2 adults and 1 child easily; larger parties must receive permission from owners in advance, and may require additional payment. The large eat-in kitchen is light and airy with full-sized appliances and seating for 4. The bedroom has a comfortable double and twin bed, while the living room has a pull-out couch, for additional sleeping accommodations. The living room also has additional seating, cable TV. Wi-Fi is available throughout the house. There is an indoor half bath and a fully-enclosed outdoor shower for the exclusive use of Lillian Spohn renters. The shower is conveniently located at the base of the outside stairs leading to the apartment. Robes are provided. A small covered upstairs deck, side yard and gas grills are also available for renters; shared use of a washing machine and dryer is available in the garage.
Centrally located within a short walking distance of excellent Chatham dining, shopping, movies and band concerts, the house is three blocks from the town salt water beach on Oyster Pond, and one mile from Coast Guard Beach, a great stretch of Atlantic Ocean and dunes. Many individuals, couples and extended families consider Ship’s Light their vacation home. We invite you to join them in making your vacation something special.
The Lillian Spohn apartment at Ship’s Light is rented from Saturday to Saturday during the summer and shoulder seasons and by the week or weekend during the off-season. Other units with unique features are also available and the whole house can be rented as a 5-to-6 bedroom home for family gatherings.
The Coleman family has owned and loved Ship's Light since the mid-1970s. Like several owners before her, Lena Coleman lived at Ship’s Light year-round and rented its apartments to summer visitors. After she passed away, Bill, Roz and Allison Coleman undertook successive renovations and updates to the property, continuing to rent it during the summers to long-time friends and new guests. It has been a labor of love to work on this lovely house over the decades and it evokes in us strong memories of the generations that have come before us; in their honor, we have named each apartment. Lena, like others before her, looked forward to the summers when her long-time renters would return to visit, bringing with them stories of their winter months and great friendships built over many years; we are proud to continue this hospitable tradition in the heart of Chatham.
Located on a quiet street just off Main Street, Ship's Light is perfectly located and convenient to everything. You can walk downtown to shop in Chatham's great stores, enjoy a meal at a great restaurant, get ice cream, see a movie at the recently-restored Orpheum Theater and attend Friday night Band Concerts; it’s a short walk to the public library and Methodist, Episcopal and Congregational churches; other churches are also nearby. Chase Park and the grist mill are right around the corner; Oyster Pond (a nice swimming beach) is a short 1/4 mile stroll; the Atlantic Ocean is about 1 mile away. The Lillian Spohn apartment is a comfortable and affordable launching pad from which to enjoy all that Chatham and the Cape have to offer.
It's all about location and this place is perfect. The house is within walking distance from the quaint town of Chatham in a beautiful residential area. Restaurants, shopping and the beach are within a couple of miles. We stayed in the upstairs unit which has some low ceilings- not great if you are 6'4" like my husband. Otherwise, just perfect! There is even a garage available to store bikes. Allison was very accommodating when we arrived early and Roz was very helpful too!
My daughter & I spent a 3 night stay in this cute apartment. The beds were very comfortable & we loved the location (just a short walk from Main Street). The outside shower may not be for everyone but we loved it! Just be careful not get locked in like I did! Allison was very pleasant to work with and I hope to book another stay in her rental in the future!
I recently stayed at the Lillian Spohn apartment and it was beyond perfect for my stay. Very clean and real Cape feel. I would recommend Allison to anyone. Flexible check out times allowed me to enjoy the duration of my stay.
Will definitely stay here again.
This property is an easy (1 block?) walk to restaurants and shops on Main Street. That was especially great for us since our car was unexpectedly in a shop for repairs for one day but we could still easily enjoy Chatham on foot. The apartment we were in wasn't spacious, but it did have everything 3 women needed. The kitchen is nicely equipped if you plan to do any cooking (we didn't). The shower is indeed outside, and there doesn't seem to be any lighting outside (other than lights triggered by motion detectors when you enter the yard), so make sure you take your shower before dark. The apartment was perfectly clean when we arrived, and, since it hadn't been occupied the night before, we were able to check in a bit early. That was a nice plus.
It was ok not alot of follow up with the people renting . We we're very poorly met by the owner who didn't introduce herself and started a conversation with what seems to be the problem ( because i had called the person who rented the place saying we needed more toilet paper and that the place didnt seem to have been cleaned prior to our arrival there was garbage left in the place and towel s didn't seem clean.) that being said we were charged an extra fee for the fourth person as they always knew we ´d be 4 and first thing we were told by the owner is im not happy seeing you girls are four here . We we ´re like how rude ! Especially since we we re honest about it and we re never told it would be a problem by the person who rented the place to us. There was mold in the fridge so we had to take time to clean it all with javel cause we intended on doing some groceries. The sink in the bathroom is discusting and in need of change . Other then that it was good as we only came to sleep there. The outside shower was good other then for the fact that neighbors could see us come down and up the stairs in our towels.
Great house in a great location-- basically walking distance or a short drive away from anywhere you'd want to go in Chatham. My fiancé and I loved our stay at the Lilian Spohn apartment and will definitely be returning!
1/4 mile walk to Oyster Pond; other beaches available close by on ocean, bay and Nantucket Sound. Excellent birding at Monomoy wildlife sanctuary.
