Built in 1906 by the pioneering Tolson family, this property was the first private school on the Gulf Islands and was later a creamery and then the private retreat of a technology billionaire and his family, during which time the property was greatly restored.
A vast variety of birds and other wildlife make this 4 acre property home. Watch the swans, eagles, hummingbirds, blue heron, quail and other exotic birds from the enormous picture window and expansive veranda. Raccoons, otters, deer and other critters are curious, safe and plentiful.
There is much to do here for all ages. On the property, there is plenty of exploring to do, and the 300 feet of private beach front to enjoy. The main lawn is large enough for a serious soccer game. Pick fruit and berries at several times of the year, then bake them into a pie in the great kitchen that looks into the gorgeous back gardens.
Various flowers are usually blooming all over the park-like gardens and landscaped terraces. Numerous exploration paths weave throughout the property.
Off the property, hiking, kayaking, sailing, golfing, fine dining, casual dining, patio drinking, swimming, shopping, scuba diving, a day at the spa, fishing, yoga, farmers markets, etc... are all close at hand.
The house is set up perfectly for entertaining and relaxing alike. With plenty of space indoors, the adults can enjoy the evening with a roaring fire in the main living room, while the kids use the spacious upper living room or the entertainment room to watch movies on the big screen and play games of all sorts. There are plenty of bedrooms to go around, all beautifully furnished and well appointed. The three full bathrooms mean that no one is waiting for their turn for a shower. The big gourmet kitchen provides the space to cook a grand meal while onlookers enjoy a glass of wine without every getting in the way.

This house is operated by the Island Heritage Appreciation Club which allows members to use it to cover the costs. Membership is open to all those who appreciate well-maintained heritage properties.

I'm a city boy from Vancouver, who has always dreamed of enjoying and maintaining an island heritage property (You don't so much 'own' such a property as take your turn looking after it)
Traveling is in my blood, but I love the natural wonders and serenity of the Gulf Islands of British Columbia more than anywhere else I have been privileged enough to visit.
An environmentalist at heart, I am sensitive to keeping this property chemical free and the house as healthy a living space as possible.

We fell in love with this late 19th century estate when a friend bought it many years ago. Every opportunity to visit that came up, we made it a priority to get there.
This is one of those properties that changes your life in so many ways, and all of them for the better.
Once you arrive at this property, you no longer need your car. Everything you need is within close walking distance. But when you enter and close the gate behind you, you are in a private world all your own and the outside world ceases to exist. It is the very best of all worlds!
Perfect for a family vacation or reunion. The house is large (we were 8 grownups & 2 toddlers) with lots of nooks etc so everyone can hang out together or get away with their own space. More importantly it is also bright, comfortably furnished, and feels completely private (at the end of about 300m driveway up a hill), yet so close to Ganges town with a bakery/coffee shop literally across the road at the end of the driveway. Children play park also just 1 minute further away.
Before punching in the entrance code, I stood on the verandah and enjoyed the view of Ganges Harbour with its variety of moored boats and other marine traffic coming in, and thought how lucky we were to have found a rental in such a secluded and lovely site. Once in the house, I was even more delighted, as it had a gracious air, was well furnished and the living room with its colourful art glass installation over the fireplace flanked with the bookshelves was a highlight for me. We were a party of five old friends, so once the house was explored, we decided the only fair way to allocate the bedrooms was to draw straws - and I was not the lucky person who drew the one for the master bedroom with its great view and ensuite bathroom, but was happy in my small upstairs one. It was a real plus to be able to stroll into Ganges for meals, art gallery visits, and restaurants - plus two excellent bakeries. I very much hope we will be able to have at the least an annual visit to this spacious and charming house, set in its extensive grounds.
This lovely 5 bedroom heritage house overlooks Ganges so you can easily walk to town to explore the shops, art galleries, restaurants, the Market, etc. Yet the house is secluded. The scent of the cedar trees over the back patio was intoxicating. The house is comfortable, well equipped, artfully decorated and met all of our needs so was perfect in every way for our girls' getaway. There were nine of us and we never felt crowded. Lots of space. The view from the house is amazing. We were all curious about the history of the house and it would have been nice to have had that on hand. We hope to make our getaway an annual event and if we decide on Saltspring again, we will definitely come back to this house and will recommend it to others. Thank you!
We were seven women celebrating a fiftieth birthday. The home was well organized, the views were beautiful and the proximity to town was very convenient. I would go back!
From the moment we pulled up to the white gates of the property, we knew we were in for something special. The house was secluded, yet so close to local amenities that the car was unnecessary. We often sat in front of the large picture window overlooking the water drinking our cups of tea, commenting on the picturesque views and the changing tides. This house has everything you could possible require and then some. Enough space for everyone, inside and out. Lawns, beautiful gardens, games to play, books to read, artwork to admire - the list goes on and on. Nearby we recommend the Oystercatcher and the local Inns for dining - in fact anywhere is good. All the shops have their own unique products and you can spend hours browsing and spending. The house was clean, tidy and perfectly explained in the listing. Well recommended. Just wish we had more time there.
This is a fabulous property. Literally on the edge of town and the edge of the ocean. There is a big lawn which allowed for multiple bocce games. We went kayaking from the rental place next store and easily accessed coffee shops, bakeries, groceries, etc. te house is beautifully set up and furnished. Everything we could possibly need. The house is full of original art which made it all the more enjoyable.
We were able to have big meals, sit around the fire, watch a movie and lounge very comfortably. We loved every minute of our stay.
Not related to the property- Saltspring is a fabulous island. Great arts, crafts, beer, wine, baked goods and if the timing is right (which it was) insane amounts of blackberries!

We experienced a beautiful 15 min drive from the Fulford ferry, only to discover an even more gorgeous heritage home! Centrally located, two minute walk to amazing breakfast, coffee, and the fantastic market, this place far exceeded our expectations. It is in the heart of everything Ganges, yet tucked away in a secluded lush garden. The house was quaint and private, yet had all the modern luxuries that made it a perfect accommodation for our group of 8 girls! Tons of natural light and amazing bay views. The beach is accessible through the yard which was also amazing.
Michael, the owner was helpful and very easygoing.
I would recommend this property for any large gathering looking to have a relaxing and comfortable stay!!
wineries, organic farms, yoga retreat and drop ins close by, many artist studios, farmers market and fair, book stores, video rentals, antique stores, clothing stores, restaurants and delivery, pubs, heritage museums, music venues, theater, old fashioned movie house (current movies though).
When you are on this very private property you would never know that this is all at your doorstep.

The 'Maintenance' fee of $150 covers a final pass by the cleaners, consumables and resetting of the property for the next guests. Because our cost to have such an extensive home and property fully cleaned after a departure exceeds this, guests are requested to leave the property significantly as they found it. Alternately a 'Full Clean' fee of $300 allows guests to depart without lifting a finger.
Although this site states that refunds will not be given on deposits, we do have a deposit refund policy that provides our guests with protection. Because people book a house like this well in advance, if you cancel it will very likely sit empty. But if you must cancel, the policy is: 100% of deposit refunded if cancelled within 30 days from the date of booking (over 90 days out), and 50% if cancelled more than 60 days prior to arrival date.
