About the property

House, 2 Bedrooms + Loft + Den, 1.5 Baths, (Sleeps 4-6)

A quintessential Maine retreat, filled with the natural beauty of wood and sunlight and all the comforts you desire. Enjoy your coffee on the deck, breakfast on the screen porch, and a dip into David Pond any time you like just a short walk down the road. Experience the beauty of a mature perennial garden with its lush colored flowers, birds, and butterflies. Treat yourself to true quiet, true darkness, and stars so bright you feel that you can almost touch them.

This beautiful log cabin sits on four wooded acres surrounded by hundreds more, with lakes in every direction. Sunlight streams into the gracious main floor through large, trapezoidal windows above and two sliding doors to the generous wrap-around deck. The living area is open concept, kitchen-dining-living, with a majestic cathedral ceiling and an adjacent furnished screen porch/sun room, where your hot tub awaits. Also on the main floor is a bedroom with a double bed, and single bunk above, the main bathroom, and a small flat screen TV for keeping up with the world while you make dinner.

Upstairs in the master bedroom, wake up in your comfy log queen bed and catch the sunrise through the upper windows. Enjoy your own half-bath, sitting room with loveseat that opens into a single bed, with plenty of room for a pack 'n' play if needed. A high chair, crib, toddler bed, and various other baby items are available upon your request. All closets and dressers are fully available for your use throughout the house.

On the lower level, but still above ground, is a large family room (or third bedroom) with a double futon, 32' flat screen TV, and spa quality treadmill. From there, a doorway to the outside takes you to the front lawn on the right, or to the outdoor shower with a wooden privacy screen on the left. If you have never taken a shower under the sky, you are in for a treat! Of course, there is a shower inside as well!

From the house, you can walk, mountain bike, snowshoe, or cross country ski through a beautiful conservation area forest to Basin Pond and beyond. Nearby are many established and maintained, well-marked hiking trails, snowmobile trails, mountains to climb, golf courses, lakes for boating, and even a wild animal park. You will enjoy a sense of peace and seclusion while knowing that you can still hop in the car and go out to a great coffee spot, if you wish. The Olde Post Office Cafe is only a 10 minute drive north in quaint Mount Vernon village, written up in DownEast Magazine.

Extensive shopping is available at two Augusta exits from I-95, exits 109 and 112 (25 minutes away) as well as a vast array of restaurants and an award-winning health club and spa. Freeport, home of L.L. Bean and a host of other outlet stores, is 45 minutes south. A trip to the coast, or to Portland, or to Sugarloaf Ski Area takes about 90 minutes. Bar Harbor, Acadia National Park, and Baxter State Park are farther away but worth the ride.

You will emerge from this vacation rested and refreshed, having seen stars brighter than you can remember. You will leave the state truly understanding the highway sign slogan at the border that reads, 'Maine, worth a visit, worth a lifetime.'

Keywords: Beautiful log home, nestled between the charming villages of Kents Hill and Mount Vernon, lake access on pristine David Pond, just south of Parker Pond and west of Echo Lake, near Kents Hill School, Camp Laurel, and the Belgrade Lakes.

About Kathleen Jameson

I moved to Maine in 2003 in the spirit of simplifying my life, and I have never looked back. I left a high powered position with many employees and a lot of stress, and embraced the Maine people, places, and lifestyle. Maine has one of the lowest crime rates in the nation (the lowest of all for violent crime), people are honest and hard working, and we all seem to value the beauty of our natural surroundings. There is a lot of culture to be found, and plenty of fun outdoors, to be sure. My husband is a retired scientist now editing scientific journal articles, and I retired from higher education and am working part-time for an environmental nonprofit.. Grandchildren have suddenly become a big part of our lives! We look forward to sharing our getaway with you, as we have moved nearby into our permanent retirement home but cannot let this log home go just yet. We hope that you will enjoy it as much as we have!

Why Kathleen Jameson chose Fayette

I love log homes, and we have actually owned three of them over the years. This one is the most striking because it faces due South and the light is amazing. It has passive solar benefits and just has a great feel. Because it is not all tongue-and-groove inside -- the ceiling and some of the walls are white or other colors -- it is not dark like some log cabins. The angle of the sun was calculated well, since the light streams into the living area in winter and warms the house, but in summer it hits the roof so that it does not overheat the house. It has great cross ventilation with the windows open and is quite comfortable in the summer.

What makes this cabin unique

We love the true silence, the sighting of animals, and the stars. I always enjoyed going into the hot tub before bed or when first rising to enjoy the peacefulness of the morning or the stars late at night. We enjoy the opportunities there for outdoor activities of all kinds.

Everything and more!

  • 5 of 5

The log home was the perfect setting for a memorable New Year retreat. I feel relaxed and rejuvenated. This is definitely a place I will keep in mind for future vacations. The hot tub is fantastic, the log home is well equipped and the setting is peaceful and perfect. Kathy is an excellent host and takes great care in making sure her guests are comfortable. I couldn't be happier and highly recommend staying here. It will be the best decision you will make if you're looking to recharge and enjoy some peace and quiet.

Christmas in Maine

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely time at this log home! Everything was neat, clean, and very comfortable. The owner, Kathie, was beyond nice and did everything she could to make us feel welcome, as well as making sure we got plowed out (major snow/ice storms while we were there!). We also had our two dogs here, and they loved it too! I would definitely recommend this place to people with dogs and/or family, and we would rent again when we return to Maine. Thank you Kathie!

Idyllic Retreat

  • 4 of 5

My husband and I spent a relaxing and enjoyable three nights at Kathie’s log cabin. The location was serene and peaceful as you are surrounded by woods. You’re just over 1/3 mile to lake access which we walked to one late afternoon, sat on the rocks and enjoyed the calm and beauty of the pond and fall foliage. The cabin itself was very clean with all of the amenities of home. Kitchen was well-stocked with spices, pots & pans, dishes, etc. I bought some things to add to the stash that I find myself using quite a bit: Ziploc bags, olive oil, and PAM. We had wanted to use the grill but didn’t have any luck so we cooked our ribeyes over a roaring fire in the fire pit. One of our favorite things to do while outdoors. We ate out on the deck which has a nice table and chairs. The hot tub out on the screened porch was one of my favorite parts of this trip. I loved being able to peel back that cover and get in at any time. Absolutely wonderful. Plenty big for four people.

We spent some time at local spots including the Apple Shed Bakery for some sweets and picked up pizza our first night at the Fayette Country Store (pretty good!). If you can, head a bit south to Castonguay Meats. This is where we got our ribeyes, farm eggs, and fresh bacon. Awesome place!

Kathie was responsive when we needed her and I appreciate that she isn’t obtrusive into your private time. I texted her a few times and let her know that we would love to come back at some point. We have done different stays using HomeAway and similar sites. This was by far our best experience.

You will not be disappointed!

The Perfect Escape

  • 5 of 5

Wow! My husband and I were in search of a peaceful, romantic weekend getaway and this cabin was more than we hoped for. It was clean, comfortable, well stocked and impeccably maintained. We felt the stress of our busy lives roll off our shoulders as soon as we pulled up to the property. We spent plenty of time in the hot tub and had nightly fires in the fire pit outside. The deck is a great place to unwind with coffee or a glass of wine and watch the stars come out. We purchased meals at The Apple Shed Bakery so after a day of exploring a few surrounding towns and the beautiful scenery, we were able to come back to the cabin and heat up a delicious dinner. Kathleen was wonderful to deal with. I had emailed her a few days before our stay with a question regarding kayaking in the area, and she answered me right away with the names, information and phone numbers of nearby companies, and where the best places to kayak are. Our weekend ended too soon, but we are already planning to return in the very near future!
