Cozy Rustic Cabin in the Woods for a Private Mountain Retreat
Situated on 2 acres on the western slopes of the North Carolina Appalachian Mountains, Fern Hill Overlook offers magnificent mountain views, lots of privacy, and is conveniently accessible to local attractions and activities.
Curve up the driveway between rock ledges and rhododendron to a rustic cabin which is not easily visible from the road. A large carved bear greets your sight as you round the bend in the driveway.
Park under the deck and walk up the stone steps. At the top of the steps, there is a bench big enough for two and a stone patio. It's a great spot for quiet reflection. Go through the house or follow the deck to the front porch for BREATHTAKING mountain views and a glimpse of the river in winter. No other cabins are between you and the river. Put the two rocking chairs together and share nature's beauty and majesty with someone special. Or, soak in the hot tub on the deck and enjoy the scenic views and forest setting. Be sure to keep an eye out for deer passing by but please respect this property as a sanctuary for the native flora and fauna.
This cabin has many amenities including full length windows, an updated kitchen and open floor plan. It is nicely furnished with rustic style furniture and accents. The master bedroom with a reading area takes full advantage of the windows and views. Firewood is provided for the wood burning stove which keeps the cabin cozy in even the coldest weather.
Located only 25 minutes from Boone or Blowing Rock, it's a short ride for shopping, touring, or skiing. Head in the other direction and you can spend the day in Tennessee at Watauga Lake! Browse the collection of books in the cabin for reading on a rainy day.
Bear images and figures are included in the decor. Count the bears in and around the cabin and turn in your total to confirm whether you found all of them. Further details are available.
Fern Hill Overlook is accessible year round but four wheel drive or chains are recommended for this property in winter months due to the significant slope of the driveway.
Although the cabin does not have central air-conditioning, the relatively high elevation and ceiling fans usually keep it comfortable year round. There are 3 sources of heat during cooler months to keep the cabin warm and cozy. As a rustic cabin in the woods, the possibility of an outdoor fire spreading to the cabin is a concern. Therefore, no outdoor fires (grills for cooking, fire pits, etc.) are allowed. Wildlife such as deer and turkey may occasionally be seen crossing the property. These 2 acres are to be respected as a sanctuary for animals. No discharge of weapons of any sort is permitted.

A native Floridian, I grew up in a beautiful, almost tropical, but very flat landscape. By contrast, the mountain scenery is magnificent in a very different and dramatic way. I love each season and the change of scenery it brings at the cabin. The natural setting and majestic peaks seen from the front porch make Fern Hill Overlook a great personal retreat. (I live in NC now about 4 hours away from my cabin.) If you are looking to experience the mountains in a private wooded setting, I invite you to consider Fern Hill Overlook.
Sandra purchased this Cabin in 2006
Why Sandra chose Sugar Grove
In May 2006 we found this permanent private rustic vacation cabin which is perfect for us. It is a truly special spot that has a feeling of seclusion on 2 acres, an awesome view of the mountains and seasonal views of the Watauga River.
What makes this Cabin unique
Hot tub for relaxation. Rocking chair front porch. Close to the river. Wooded. For necessities, there is a nearby grocery, deli and gas station. We consider this property a refuge for the wildlife and the people who visit. Please respect our desire to maintain this property as a sanctuary for everything within its boundaries. We hope that your stay here will be an experience to store in your chest of treasured memories.

Sandra was very helpful when corresponding. The view is fantastic and it's only 20 minutes to Boone!
Very cozy place to get away!
We absolutely loved it. Beautiful views. Cozy home. Owner was quick to help us when we had a question. Highly recommend this place.
Very cozy and private
I loved it. Only one thing I would change is a softer master bed. Otherwise it was perfect!
Enjoyed our stay! My grandson loved the porch and yard. Lots of room to roam but yet we felt comfortable we could keep an eye on him, with the woods the boundaries were set. Beautiful view from porch, living room and master bed room. Hot tub was awesome ! Easy to find, and easy to get to Boone, Blowing Rock and Villa Cruz
Amazing place .
We really had a great time, very very nice place.
Romantic/Secluded Atmosphere with Great View
This is such cozy little cabin, me and my boyfriend stayed here the first weekend of May to celebrate our 3 year anniversary. Going into this vacation our main goal was to disconnect from everything and everyone to focus on each other. That is exactly what we did. Upon arriving we did encounter minor trouble getting up the steep driveway. We also found that the TV was not working and as well as the oven, which we found old food in. But we made do with the stove and the micro wave. The board games, the wrap around porch and last but not least, the hot tub were our favorite things about the cabin. We did see deer in our yard while there. You really do feel secluded and like you are living in the wilderness while staying here! We were not prepared for how cold it was up there! The hot tub was a great fix for that though. Overall our stay there was what we wanted, the disconnect and spent much needed quality time together.
I am happy to know that the cabin provided the atmosphere you wanted to your getaway. After you left, I checked on the problems you reported with the oven and TV. Apparently a storm prior to your arrival caused an electrical fluctuation that damaged the TV and the control panel for the oven. Those appliances are scheduled for replacement in June. My cleaning crew has also been notified to make sure they check the inside of the oven as well as clean the surface. Thank you for sharing your experience.
Enjoy majestic mountain views, the crisp tang of the air, the abundance of wildlife, the splendor of the leaves in fall, the sound of the river after a rain, and the character of this mountain community! In this very private setting, the hot tub on the deck is a great way to relax while you enjoy the view. It's a short drive to Valle Crucis. Be sure to visit the Mast General Store and Annex there. Music in the Valle features local musicians in the community park on Friday nights during the summer. For “downtown” shopping, it is about 20 minutes from Boone. There’s a great grocery right around the corner from the cabin for any necessities. Ski resorts in the area provide sporting activity in the winter. For warmer weather, there are opportunities for horseback riding, kayaking, canoeing and whitewater rafting.
