This gorgeous, 2-story 1874 home is a perfect place to vacation, as it is strategically-located on the Island, has a large kitchen/dining area that is well-stocked, has a large yard, a wonderful back patio and also a special “picnic area” with 2 picnic tables next to the home. HOBO Retreat has 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a convenient laundry room, and is well-decorated with a coastal theme throughout. We even made a special bedroom/bath with a Pirate Theme for the children! (We are child-friendly and have available 2 toddler stair gates, as well as a Pac N’Play and sturdy highchair, if needed. We apologize, but we cannot take animals, as some renters are allergic and we must respect them also.) Our “Retreat” is located 3 miles onto Mt. Desert Island, is 4 miles to Acadia National Park entrance/Visitor Center, and is a quick 10- minute drive to reach downtown Bar Harbor (where there is shopping, eating, excursions of all kinds, Shore Path with its historic homes and plaques to provide information about the area). Our home is also readily accessible to any of the 5 Harbors located on this island, each harbor with its own “flavor” and atmosphere. Available in HOBO Retreat, we have put together two special handouts for our guests: “Suggested Things to Do/Experience” on/off the Island, and “Recommended Eats” on/off the Island. Please view our photographs in this listing, as they contain pictures of this property, and a variety of photos suggesting things available to experience in this beautiful area! We hope you thoroughly enjoy your time on Mt. Desert Island, as it is very special, is a place to cherish and make wonderful memories with those you enjoy and love! (NOTE: If this rental is unavailable during your requested time frame, please check out our “HOBO Chalet-#999493”, a newly-constructed and beautiful home that also sleeps 8 comfortably. It is located toward the back of this property by the peaceful woods, insuring your privacy, and has also been loved by all who stay there!)

This charming house was perfect for our family vacation. It was convenient to Bar Harbor, dining, and hiking. The house had everything we needed and more. We really enjoyed staying here.
Property was very clean and well stocked. The downstairs was well laid out, but the upstairs was awkward ( having to walk through a bathroom and bedroom to access each). The location was great, near downtown Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park.
Great location to access the north attractions, Hull Cove entrance to the park and Bar Harbor itself. The house was perfect for the seven of us (adults) and was well maintained, comfortable, and beautifully decorated. Cozy, comfy and as described. The hosts had the place well stocked and accommodated us! Yard was spacious for outdoor activities as well, and Hadley Point nearby was great for nighttime fires.
The Hobo retreat was clean and comfortable, and a nice place for our young families to stay. Our boys especially loved the pirate room! The yard was expansive and we had beautiful weather where we could enjoy the time outside. The only thing I would comment on as a possible negative is the proximity of the home to a very busy road, as the road noise was a bit more than I expected. This impacted us minimally, however, and the fact that we were less than 15 min to downtown Bar Harbor and the Acadia Park entrance was perfect!
The unique home at 2 Hobo Lane was charming and so comfortable - lots of space for everyone and the kitchen had everything we needed to enjoy our time. The owner was responsive and helpful, and we appreciated the book of recommendations they provided! Would recommend and would book again!
Lots going for this property! The location was excellent and it was very well stocked. We were a party of 7, two separate families, staying a full week and never ran out of the essentials. One thing I will say for future guests is that the layout is a challenge for two families
Outstanding location!Take advantage of the bus, they will stop right outside if you ask!The house is nice, large, and has a great lawn. However, it’s close to the road, and if does get a bit noisy. I’d also call out that, there are two bedrooms upstairs that, you have to go through one of the other two bedrooms to get either downstairs or into a bathroom. So, make sure you like everyone you’re staying with!

My First Trip to Bar Harbor ME
The house was old and in the course of modernization, the layout was a bit strange but lovable. The upstairs should only be used by people less than 6 feet tall. The house was centrally located between Acadia Nat Park near Bar Harbor and the other 2 main harbors of NE and SW Harbor. My main gripe was that we couldn't drink the water. Maybe it said that in the ad..I didn't notice it. Again no big deal but we did have buy bottled water for coffee and taking pills (That what seniors do). I would love to go back there again and would stay in the same house but the drive is a pain.

Thank you for your review on the HoBo Retreat. We love the hear feedback form our renters so we can make improvements for future renters. The house was constructed in 1874 and there was an addition of a modern kitchen and downstairs bath completed in 2004. We have re-decorated all the rooms in the house in a coastal themes and due to the age of the original house the upstairs bedroom doors are shorter than homes of the modern age. Most people like that New England feel. I am 6'4" and I do have to watch the low doors when we are there. The home is on a filtered well system and although you can drink the water, we prefer to use bottled water for dinking and coffee. You will find the home has a very comfortable feel and we strive to make your stay enjoyable and memorable. If anyone ever has any question before or during there stay, feel free to call Bob or Heather anytime. FYI, the name HoBo Retreat derives from our first and last name initials. Heather O & Bob O.
We had two families (7 ppl) staying here for a week. The house is cute, well stocked, conveniently located, and comfortable (AC is a rarity in Maine). There were 2 small issues:
1. The upstairs shower was out of service (needed a new door, not resolved during our stay). This meant 7 ppl sharing one shower which was difficult.
2. The layout is a little challenging if you have a full house. The upstairs bathroom is accessible through a bedroom. There is a second access from a staircase, but to get downstairs you have to go through the first floor bedroom (which also has no door to that stair). The whole arrangement is a bit uncomfortable and 2/4 bedrooms are effectively trapped with the only bathroom access through another bedroom.
Other than the layout this is a great place to stay on island!
This was the perfect place while visiting MDI. We were able to get to all of our places in a short amount of time which helped with our early morning activities. The home was very clean and roomy. Enjoyed sitting out on the porch after a long day of hiking. Loved all the helpful tips they provided. Offered things to do and places to eat. Our favorites were the Chart Room, Jordan’s for blueberry pancakes (to die for), and Jordan’s Pond. Must get the blueberry lemonade.
The house is next to a busy highway and you can hear traffic while in the house. It didn’t disrupt our sleep however we were afraid to open the windows because of it. The house has four window ac units- living room, main floor bedroom, upstairs hallway and one in an upstairs bedroom. Two bedrooms didn’t have AC. They also provided fans. Unfortunately it still got pretty toasty and humid in the house even though the week we were there it was in the 70’s. The house also had a musty smell to it. The house was well supplied with toiletries and towels. Appreciated the W/D. Little disappointed they didn’t supply coffee (which I knew because I asked) and the fridge was empty. No condiments or anything.
I would suggest to have the following make the stay just a bit more convenient:
*supply coffee
*beach blanket and/or chairs
*cooler/ice packs (we left a cooler and 8 ice packs)
*condiments
*AC in every brm and more fans
If heat doesn’t bother you, I would highly suggest this location. It really was a game changer.
Former neighbors met at the Hobo Retreat for 6 days of exploring Bar Harbor and lobster eating. The kitchen is completely equipped, the 2 bathrooms gave each couple privacy and the back porch was a great place to relax.
We rented both houses on hobo lane for a family reunion. Both houses were beautiful and well kept and stocked. We enjoyed making s’mores around the fire pit! The houses are located so that everything is just a short drive away. Thank you to Heather and Bob for hosting us on our first trip to Maine!
Everything was perfect. Cottage was located in the perfect spot. It was clean and had a neat layout with nautical decor. I loved the raspberries around the house!
When we walked we were just amazed at how beautiful and clean this home is. Everything that we needed was at our fingertips, and it is beyond me how anyone can have a whole house set up so perfectly. Beautifully decorated, comfortable and felt like home. The kitchen has plenty of room to cook, and the table is large enough for 6 adults and 2 young children to spend time eating and playing games. Bedrooms were comfortable and bathrooms had everything you might forget at home. I guess the only thing I’d say, and not being negative, is that with 6 adults and a 4 yr old, someone was always in the bathroom when it was needed by this 4 yr old. Good thing a potty was brought by parents. Close to Acadia, Bar Harbor and anywhere else you’d want to go. Perfect. Thanks for the perfect vacation home for our family!
My family of kids and grandkids had a wonderful week at Hobo Retreat near Bar Harbor. The house was immaculately clean with great appliances and decor. Thank you for the air conditioner. When we arrived it was in the mid 90’s…can you believe that for Mt Desert Island. Main floor was very comfortable and upstairs bedrooms warm but ok for sleeping.
Thank you Bob for allowing us to stay and relax in your fine house

We were pleasantly surprised to find that many of our needs were met in this house. There plenty of towels, all of the kitchen supplies, and even some laundry detergent for use. The owners were great with communication, and very kind.
The property was great. Perfect for my 2 kids and my young niece. They had plenty of room to play!
The only downside was the set up of the house, in regards to getting to the upstairs. In order to get to the upstairs hallway/rooms you had to either: 1. Go up the narrow stairs and walk through the bathroom and pirate room, or 2. Walk through the downstairs bedroom to get to another set of stairs. Being that we had 2 different families staying there, no matter which way we spun it, it was going to be tricky. But we made it work!
We personally enjoyed that every room had laundry baskets, dressers, hangers (in all closets), and lots of space to put all of our things. We were able to unpack everything and put it where we needed it.
We loved our stay and would definitely stay again! Thanks for the great space!
This is a great rental! We had booked this trip in 2020 but had to cancel due to an immunocompromised child and the pandemic. We were able to get our money back and booked the same house this year. Check in process was simple and well communicated. The house is spacious, with 1 bedroom on the main floor, three additional sleeping areas upstairs, two true bedrooms and a Pirate themed walkthrough bedroom. We had plenty of space for 4 kids ages 2-12, two parents and two grandparents. There are two bathrooms as well, one up and one down. This house was built many decades ago and shows features of the building techniques of its time, however, it has been nicely modernized and updated throughout. It does sit next to a busier road but that really didn’t bother us at all, nor the kids, as we had AC units or fans for each bedroom to help drown out any noise. The home is well stocked, has a dishwasher, washer and dryer which was very convenient, modern appliances, WiFi and a big screen TV. It is several miles to Hull’s Cove visitor’s center for Acadia National Park and about a 10 minute drive to downtown Bar Harbor. We would not hesitate to book the same house on a return visit in the future.
Spotlessly clean. Close to Bar Harbor’s downtown area and Acadia. Right next to a busy road so a tad noisy at night, but we were all so tired from hiking that we slept through it. Communication from owner prior to trip was A+++.
The house was lovely, and every detail of decoration was perfectly comfortable and perfectly “Maine.” The kitchen was completely outfitted, and the porch and yard were great places to relax. Very comfortable beds and nice linens.

About the host
Hosted by Robert Overly
Bob & Heather from Phoenix Arizona have 6 children and 8 grandchildren. Bob is a small business owner and Heather is a physical therapist for more than 39 years. Our favorite past time is coming to Maine, hiking Acadia Park, exploring the Coast, and relaxing (and working!) on our cozy getaway home!
Why they chose this property
While vacationing here in July of 2008, Heather saw this house with a 'For Sale' sign in the front yard. Since we were both really 'taken' with this Island, we backed up, took a peek at the house, and soon after, decided to invest in a getaway so different from the Southwest. After returning home to Phoenix, we made an offer and the rest is history. We have a summer home 3013 miles door to door from our home in Phoenix, and look forward to each summer when we return to Maine!
What makes this property unique
Our home in Bar Harbor is the only place that we really feel like we are on vacation and while we are there, we stop thinking of our work and the problems of the world. It truly is a very relaxing place and you can never run out of new experiences and adventures on the Maine coast.
