Spacious well-appointed home with everything you need just moments from downtown Hilo. With three bedrooms and two baths, this Reed's Island home is a wonderful place to stay while you enjoy all that the Big Island has to offer.

The master bedroom with its ensuite bathroom opens up to a small lanai that's perfect for enjoying your morning coffee. Later, enjoy the large family-sized lanai off the open living/dining/kitchen open floorplan central area. The front lanai is large, covered and ready for enjoyment.

Behind the house is the Wailuku River and its many waterfalls. You can see several small ones from the back lanai. For privacy, across the river is a large undeveloped parcel so you can sit out and enjoy this all to yourself if you so choose.

Down the street are pieces of Hilo history like the Shipman house. The Reed's Island area has always been a highly prized neighborhood with an eclectic mix of old and new homes - no two alike.

From the house, you could walk or take short drive into downtown Hilo. On the way you will pass the Hilo Public Library, with its historic stones (the Naha Stone and the Pinao Stone). Because of the role the Naha Stone played in the history of Hawaii, its worth a visit. An ancient legend said that the one who moved the stone would rule all the islands, but if you took the challenge and failed, you were killed. Kamehameha took that challenge and succeeded - and he did rule all the islands.

Further downtown is a wide assortment of shops and restaurants where you can find everything from high-end fancy chopsticks to amazing art. The food varies from "burger and fries" to higher-end meals sourced with local ingredients. Downtown Hilo is something you truly should experience.

Pluses and minuses.

The house and location were excellent. Close enough to walk or jog into town and the riverside location was private and exotic. The rental is a terrific bargain. On the negative side, the sound of the roaring river (A LOT of rain while we were there.) and coqui frogs were deafening making it difficult to sleep. Because there is no AC the doors and windows had to remain open for comfort.

Owner's Response: Mahalo nui for your review, Sanford! We're so sorry that your trip was during that stormy period. Usually the little stream sounds so pleasant... I can imagine what it was like during that rain, tho! We hope you did still enjoy your time in Hilo, never the less. We'd love for you to return one day so you can enjoy the area when the weather is normal :-) Take care!

Serenaded by the sound of the forest

  • 5 of 5

It is astonishing that a place so close to the center of Hilo could be completely surrounded by the forest and the river. The songs of the frogs through the evening and night is wonderful. Even more astonishing was the lack of mosquitoes :) The house has everything you need but I did have some difficulty using the stove top, it seemed a little temperamental with the pans? I don't know if that was just me?

Reviewer Comments:

WOW!!!! Fantastic Place!!! Rain Forest retreat. Excellent location, close to grocery stores (KTA), movie theatre (Kress), Kosmic Kones. Great location for visiting Volcanoes National Park, Waipio valley, and Mauna Kea.

Must do's - Kilauea iki trail @ VNP, hike down the STEEP 4wd road at Waipio and see the Hi'iawe falls, Drive from rain forest (Wailele Nalo house) to alpine @ Onizuka visitor center at Mauna Kea (temp. dropped 30 degrees in 1 hour) climb Pu'u Kalepeamoa and see Maui at sunset. Eat sushi at Miwa in Hilo shopping center. Loco Moco at Ken's. Sit on the Lanai and watch the Wailuku river down below.(The morning after hurricane Iselle hit it had risen up to the vegetation!) Use the BBQ and cook up some Hawaiian beef burgers! Nice and cool at night - had to use the comforter! Walk up and down the one way road. Visit Lyman House and 'Imiloa astronomy center. Pacific Tsunami museum and Hilo farmer's market are musts as well. So much more to see,do, and eat (take a breath) and easy to get to from this location. Thanks Wailele Nalo!!

Great house and location! Had a wonderful stay despite hurricane Iselle. Fortunately Hilo wasn't hit as bad as Puna. Incredible view of Waikulu River (It rose up to the vegetation after Iselle and was quite brown). The house was very clean upon our arrival and had everything we needed in the kitchen and bathrooms. Very good cross ventilation. We were quite comfortable ( 2 adults and 3 teens). The photos were accurate-WOW factor 7 when we arrived. It is less than an hour to Volcanoes National Park (we went 2 days in a row, the park pass is good for 7) Hike the Kilauea Iki trail and drive the Chain of Craters road. Stay till dark and see the glow from Halema'uma'u crater. Drive to Waipio lookout and hike down the STEEP 4wd road to see Hi'ilawe falls. We drove from rain forest to alpine at Mauna Kea (Onizuka visitor's center) in an hour. The temp. fell 30 degrees. Climb the short and easy Pu'u Kalepeamoa cone to see Maui at sunset. It was socked in but we were patient and rewarded with an incredible experience! Great sushi served in Bento boxes at restaurant Miwa in Hilo shopping center. Loco Moco at Ken's. Buy some produce at Hilo farmer's market and Hawaii beef burgers at KTA and cook them on the new BBQ on the lanai. Visit 'Imiloa astronomy center (Mauna Kea between earth and sky in the planetarium), the Lyman museum, Pana'ewa zoo, Pacific tsunami museum, catch a flick at the Kress theater and a milkshake at Kozmic Kones (you can walk to it). Eat at grandma's place in Honoka'a before you go to the Waipio lookout. Coconut Island and Lili'uokalani park were very pleasant as was the Banyan drive. all in all we had a wonderful stay in Wailele Nalo and would definitely recommend this house to anyone with 5 or more travelers. Thanks and hope to return some day.
