IMPORTANT NOTE: As of 3-July-2018, Hwy 130 has been reopened and Kalapana area businesses, including vacation rentals, are authorized to resume operations. The ongoing eruption has stabilized to the point that this area is in no immediate danger. However, guests who chose to stay here may experience some volcanic effects, including vog and Pele's hair. Vog is 'volcanic smog'- like the haze of many big cities but produced by the volcano instead of by cars and industry. Vog presence depends on wind conditions. When it is present here it's considered 'nuisance level' to healthy adults but should be avoided by small children, the elderly, and people with respiratory problems. Pele's hair is glass-like filaments of volcanic rock that can settle on the ground and can lodge skin if stepped on, so footwear should always be worn outside– even on the lanai – and removed before entering the house to avoid tracking in or damaging the floor. Guests who book in this area do so with the understanding that these conditions may be present and that refunds will not be offered because of them. Guests should also be aware that the situation could change at any time. If the authorities feel there is any threat of danger you may have to cut your stay short, in which case any unused nights would be refunded.
Part Balinese hut, part gothic cathedral, part art museum… all tropical paradise! Located just off lower Puna's gorgeous Red Road in the quiet community of Puna Beach Palisades, Hale O Kamakani (House of the Upward Breeze) is unlike any place you've ever stayed before. When you climb the impressive staircase and enter through the double doors with their lovely cut glass inlays, you'll be blown away by the unique design, artful décor, gorgeous wood treatments and fabulous ocean views, with surprises around every corner!
You'll enter from the front lanai into the great room, which combines the kitchen, dining and sitting areas in that familiar Hawaiian floorplan. Your eye will be drawn immediately to the panoramic view showcased by the large windows throughout the home. Photos don't come close to doing it justice!
Both bedroom suites and the great room are home to special double doors that can be closed and locked, opened with screens, or roll back the screens and leave the back of the house open to nature, al fresco style. You'll love the chance to experience our perfect climate without barriers the way so many residents do.
The modern, compact and very well equipped kitchen provides high end appliances, including a gas range, dishwasher and side-by-side fridge with ice maker and water dispenser, as well as a coffee maker, coffee grinder, toaster and deep double sink aid in your culinary endeavors. A full complement of cooking and serving ware are also provided - all you need to bring is the food!
Just beyond the kitchen is a lovely wood dining table with ocean views and seating for 4. On the left side of the great room is an ocean view sitting area. Step out onto the large covered lanai that runs the length of the home, and you'll find an outdoor dining table, as well as lounge chairs and additional seating. Did we mention there are ocean views from here too? There's a private outdoor shower as well - perfect for rinsing off when you return from Kehena black sand beach, just down the street!
Hale O Kamakani's unique floor plan provides excellent privacy. There are two bedroom suites located at opposite ends of the home. Each suite has a quality queen platform bed, ocean view, and those cool doors that can be closed, screened or open, as well as an attached bathroom that is decked out with huge stained glass windows in tropical motifs.
The south suite has a table and chairs and a reading nook. The alcove leading to the bathroom has a dresser and a walk-in closet. The ensuite bathroom has a large tub and hand held shower. The north suite offers a smaller closet and a table with seating. There's a dresser in the bathroom, along with an elegant pedestal sink and a river rock and tile shower with dual shower heads.
Head back to the great room and climb the stairs to the loft where you'll find the den, with a large overstuffed couch and TV with satellite service and a DVD player. There's a great ocean view from up here too - a screen door opens to a small balcony if you really want to take it all in.
Incredible art pieces decorate every corner of the home. Ceiling fans provide air flow in both bedrooms and bathrooms, as well as the loft den. The imported furnishings are exotic and beautiful. Fabulous books abound, on topics such as art, Hawaii and other tropical locations, food, fiction, and more. Don't forget to check the large armoire in the foyer for a selection of games to keep you entertained on rainy days or into the evening.
The house is a great base for exploring the east side of the Big Island. Kehena black sand beach is at the bottom of a near-by steep incline, where you'll experience some of the more colorful area residents. An enclave of retired Cirque du Soleil performers live nearby - you'll often see acrobats, fire dancers, and so on - with or without swim suits ;-) Uncle Robert's awesome Wednesday Night Market is only a 5 minute drive. The new lava viewing area is less than 10 minutes away by car. Eclectic Pahoa town, with excellent restaurants plus groceries, gas, banks, etc, is a 15 minute drive. Historic Hilo town is about an hour, and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is a just over an hour's drive.
