About the property

Spacious Asian-Pacific themed home with 180 degree ocean views!

Part Balinese hut, part gothic cathedral, part art museum… all tropical paradise! Located just off lower Puna's gorgeous Red Road in the quiet community of Puna Beach Palisades, Hale O Kamakani (House of the Upward Breeze) is unlike any place you've ever stayed before. When you climb the impressive staircase and enter through the double doors with their lovely cut glass inlays, you'll be blown away by the unique design, artful décor, gorgeous wood treatments and fabulous ocean views, with surprises around every corner!

You'll enter from the front lanai into the great room, which combines the kitchen, dining and sitting areas in that familiar Hawaiian floorplan. Your eye will be drawn immediately to the panoramic view showcased by the large windows throughout the home. Photos don't come close to doing it justice!

Both bedroom suites and the great room are home to special double doors that can be closed and locked, opened with screens, or roll back the screens and leave the back of the house open to nature, al fresco style. You'll love the chance to experience our perfect climate without barriers the way so many residents do.

The modern, compact and very well equipped kitchen provides high end appliances, including a gas range, dishwasher and side-by-side fridge with ice maker and water dispenser, as well as a coffee maker, coffee grinder, toaster and deep double sink aid in your culinary endeavors. A full complement of cooking and serving ware are also provided - all you need to bring is the food!

Just beyond the kitchen is a lovely wood dining table with ocean views and seating for 4. On the left side of the great room is an ocean view sitting area. Step out onto the large covered lanai that runs the length of the home, and you'll find an outdoor dining table, as well as lounge chairs and additional seating. Did we mention there are ocean views from here too? There's a private outdoor shower as well - perfect for rinsing off when you return from Kehena black sand beach, just down the street!

Hale O Kamakani's unique floor plan provides excellent privacy. There are two bedroom suites located at opposite ends of the home. Each suite has a quality queen platform bed, ocean view, and those cool doors that can be closed, screened or open, as well as an attached bathroom that is decked out with huge stained glass windows in tropical motifs.

The south suite has a table and chairs and a reading nook. The alcove leading to the bathroom has a dresser and a walk-in closet. The ensuite bathroom has a large tub and hand held shower. The north suite offers a smaller closet and a table with seating. There's a dresser in the bathroom, along with an elegant pedestal sink and a river rock and tile shower with dual shower heads.

Head back to the great room and climb the stairs to the loft where you'll find the den, with a large overstuffed couch and TV with satellite service and a DVD player. There's a great ocean view from up here too - a screen door opens to a small balcony if you really want to take it all in.

Incredible art pieces decorate every corner of the home. Ceiling fans provide air flow in both bedrooms and bathrooms, as well as the loft den. The imported furnishings are exotic and beautiful. Fabulous books abound, on topics such as art, Hawaii and other tropical locations, food, fiction, and more. Don't forget to check the large armoire in the foyer for a selection of games to keep you entertained on rainy days or into the evening.

The house is a great base for exploring the east side of the Big Island. Kehena black sand beach is at the bottom of a near-by steep incline, where you'll experience some of the more colorful area residents. An enclave of retired Cirque du Soleil performers live nearby - you'll often see acrobats, fire dancers, and so on - with or without swim suits ;-) Uncle Robert's awesome Wednesday Night Market is only a 5 minute drive. The new lava viewing area is less than 10 minutes away by car. Eclectic Pahoa town, with excellent restaurants plus groceries, gas, banks, etc, is a 15 minute drive. Historic Hilo town is about an hour, and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is a just over an hour's drive.

When you are ready to be transported, come and stay at this beautiful and unique home. Hale O Kamakani awaits you!

Fantastic Hawaiian Retreat

  • 5 of 5

What a beautiful home in a quiet area of the Big Island - the home is gorgeous with great kitchen, lovely bedrooms, very comfortable beds and couches, and lovely breeze. The coqui frogs sing you to sleep each night and the sound of the waves is very soft in the background. The only things missing were a dvd player and tissues - both of which we bought and left for future visitors. I am hopeful the nearby volcano of Kileuaa will settle down and allow visitors back soon! By the way, there is a friendly black cat that drops by each day and loves some petting.

Loved our Stay!

  • 5 of 5

What a beautiful home for our family"s Hawaiian vacation! Very cool Asian inspired art throughout the home with a lot of room to spread out! Beds were very comfortable, and everything was very clean. Loved all the stain glass and decks out back. The kitchen was fully loaded, bathrooms very large, washer and dryer and even snorkel and other items to borrow during our stay. Great attention to detail!

Beautiful House

  • 5 of 5

The Mrs and I spent 6 days in this beautiful home. The house is beautifully decorated and offered all the comforts of home, including a refrigerator with an ice-maker and a gas range. The house is an easy 40 min drive to Hilo. Kehena Beach is literally a walk down the road. The Ahalanui Hot Pond is a picturesque 20 min drive away. Volcano National Park is also an easy drive. Nearby Pahoa town has some excellent restaurants. We ate there often. The infamous Uncle Roberts Wednesday night fete is a quick 10 min drive away and a must do! I wouldnt hesitate to rebook this home for my next stay on this side of the Big Island.

Hale o Kamakani is just a 5 min walk to the (clothing optional) Kehena black sand beach, where if you're lucky you can swim with the spinner dolphins. The home is a 15 minute drive to “Ahalanui Beach Park (a naturally warmed 95 degree seawater pond) as well as Wai Opae Protected tide-pools in Kapoho where you will find some of the best swimming and snorkeling that can be found on the east of our island. Beginning or ending your day in either of these beautiful and unique places is an experience that is not to be missed. Just 7 minutes away is Uncle Robert’s, a great place to take in the local fair, with its kava bar and local Hawaiian entertainment.

Puna Beach Palisades is 50 minutes from Volcano National Park, 35 minutes from Hilo airport, and 12 minutes from the quaint village of Pahoa, which has some of the best dining in our area featuring Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai, Italian, Tex-Mex and local Hawaiian resturants.

Old Hilo town is a must visit with its colorful farmer's markets, shopping, interesting museums to tell you all about the history of this side of the island.
