Nestled at the foot of Mount Galiano with one of the most spectacular views of the Southern Gulf Islands, Orca Bay Retreat is located on Active Pass - the wondrous, often turbulent waters and marine passage separating Galiano and Mayne Islands.
This particular area is known for its resplendent array of wildlife - looking out from the deck you'll see seals sunning themselves on Collinson Reef, eagles soaring overhead or plucking fish from the ocean below, and otters frolicking in the swirling Pacific currents. Breathe the ocean air and feel connected to mother nature.
Active Pass is notably a frequently travelled waterway for resident and transient orca whales and humpbacks. Seeing these magnificent mammals in their natural element is truly breathtaking.
A wonderful, completely private escape, Orca Bay Retreat has all the modern amenities one could desire, including wireless connection to highspeed internet. Two bedrooms, each with queen size beds, offer luxurious comfort and nature views. Enjoy French Door walk-outs from the bedrooms, living room and kitchen. The house is extremely comfortable, with a contemporary kitchen that is fully loaded, including a stainless steel convection oven, microwave, dishwasher and other small appliances. An outdoor barbeque is available as well.
Orca Bay Retreat is actually located on Georgeson Bay, and is perfectly situated for guests to enjoy a wide range of outdoor activities: hiking some of the best trails the Gulf Islands have to offer; kayaking, fishing and boating from nearby Montague Harbour Marina; golfing at The Galiano Golf & Country Club; swimming and beachcombing at the numerous nearby beaches, including our own Georgeson Bay beach below (here you can even hunt for arrowheads left behind by First Nations Peoples hundreds of years ago); exploring the island by bike; and strolling through The Bluffs park amidst indigenous arbutus and Garry Oak trees to incredible cliffside viewpoints of the Southern Gulf Islands.
When you've had enough of the outdoors, sit back, decompress, cuddle by the wood-burning fireplace and take in the stunning view. Enjoy island tranquility at its best at any time of the year. And because you're staying at 'Orca' Bay Retreat, always keep an eye on the water.
While we are a private escape nestled in nature, we are less than ten minutes from the Sturdies Bay Ferry terminal and within minutes of Galiano's shops, restaurants, groceries and galleries.
Due to our proximity to sheer unfenced cliffs and fast moving currents, we are not suitable for small children.

About Lisa MacKinnon
Gary and I have had love affair with Galiano since my parents bought a cottage across the street over 20 years ago. Our two children have been privileged to spend their summers exploring the natural wonders and beauty of the island, and as adults, working at the marina and golf course. While we currently reside in Toronto, we spend as much time as possible on Galiano throughout every season. We especially enjoy the winter months which have their own special cozy, seductive and stormy appeal.
Lisa MacKinnon purchased this House in 2013
Why Lisa MacKinnon chose Galiano Island
This property is a gem. Formerly owned by our good friends, we consider ourselves grateful and fortunate to have been able to purchase it, and now to share its unique beauty and that of Galiano Island with others. We also love the island because of its close proximity to the mainland and Vancouver Island. There's nowhere else we'd want to be.
What makes this House unique
Fresh ocean air, incredible ocean views and unbelievable wildlife - whales, eagles, deer, seals and otters. Looking out over Active Pass from the deck or living room is a transformative experience. The house, itself, is wonderfully comfortable and homey.

Cozy with incredible view
Spent a week in this quiet well stocked home on a writing retreat. The view inspired us and we enjoyed some local walks. Entertained by seals and the ferries marked time passing. Would highly recommend and will stay again
This was a very nice get away. Nicely appointed and nested in Galiano Island . The view from the main bedroom and from the living room is outstanding, straight into Active Pass! We will be back.
Galiano Island can only be reached by ship.
The cottage is a modern home with precise attention to detail. All you need to provide meals is there. Maybe bring olive oil?
It overlooks the iconic route of the BC Ferries, Active Pass. A narrow gap between Galiano and Mayne Islands.
The ferries announce each arrival at the entrance to the pass with a blast to warn other shipping. A haunting sound.
Moments from the cottage is the start of the hike up Mount Galiano. Steep but doable. I know.
The Island has a provincial park Montague Bay. Walk along a pristine beach ( my daughter went for a swim on Christmas Day) with a wonderful diversity for sea birds. And we foraged for samphire.
The tourist traps are non existent. The restaurants for the most part are simple apart from the French Restaurant in Montague Bay that was closed, but we checked out and looks like a place I would love to go. Locally sourced, exquisite food, prepared by people that are committed.
The highlight is the Daystar Market. Run by hippies from the past.
Lisa is well organized and provides all you need to know.
This was our first visit to Galiano and I am afraid we have been truly spoiled by simply the best vacation rental ever! Lisa's house is incredible and from top to bottom cozy! In five minutes you can walk to the base of Mount Galiano and climb to the most amazing view of the Gulf Islands we have ever seen. Our only regret is that we didn't stay longer. We will be back soon.
Peace and Quiet on Galiano
Lisa was very helpful in all the arrangements and the house was clean, bright, well organized and the location was ideal for sitting and watching the world go by. One ferry at a time. We were very comfortable and the multiple decks and garden area allowed for everyone to find a special spot for themselves. Our daughter ended up reading in the garden on the swing.
And yes, the photo from the master bedroom with sparkling blue water was exactly the view we had for five days.
Barb and Larry's Favourite Place
Lisa and Gary's home on Galiano is our favourite place to visit every year. We can't think of a more restful place than this special spot in Orca Bay. The views from every window, and deck areas are unsurpassed. We can sit for hours on the viewing deck waiting to see Orca's and we often do! Lisa has the house outfitted with everything you will need for a pampered stay. Pots of lovely flowers make the decks feel like home. Hiking Mount Galiano, just behind the house, means we don't have to drive anywhere for an adventure. A truly relaxing holiday! Thanks to Lisa and Gary for sharing this special spot in paradise, and making it so comfortable for your guests.
