About the property

Nestled at the foot of Mount Galiano with one of the most spectacular views of the Southern Gulf Islands, Orca Bay Retreat is located on Active Pass - the wondrous, often turbulent waters and marine passage separating Galiano and Mayne Islands.

This particular area is known for its resplendent array of wildlife - looking out from the deck you'll see seals sunning themselves on Collinson Reef, eagles soaring overhead or plucking fish from the ocean below, and otters frolicking in the swirling Pacific currents. Breathe the ocean air and feel connected to mother nature.

Active Pass is notably a frequently travelled waterway for resident and transient orca whales and humpbacks. Seeing these magnificent mammals in their natural element is truly breathtaking.

A wonderful, completely private escape, Orca Bay Retreat has all the modern amenities one could desire, including wireless connection to highspeed internet. Two bedrooms, each with queen size beds, offer luxurious comfort and nature views. Enjoy French Door walk-outs from the bedrooms, living room and kitchen. The house is extremely comfortable, with a contemporary kitchen that is fully loaded, including a stainless steel convection oven, microwave, dishwasher and other small appliances. An outdoor barbeque is available as well.

Orca Bay Retreat is actually located on Georgeson Bay, and is perfectly situated for guests to enjoy a wide range of outdoor activities: hiking some of the best trails the Gulf Islands have to offer; kayaking, fishing and boating from nearby Montague Harbour Marina; golfing at The Galiano Golf & Country Club; swimming and beachcombing at the numerous nearby beaches, including our own Georgeson Bay beach below (here you can even hunt for arrowheads left behind by First Nations Peoples hundreds of years ago); exploring the island by bike; and strolling through The Bluffs park amidst indigenous arbutus and Garry Oak trees to incredible cliffside viewpoints of the Southern Gulf Islands.

When you've had enough of the outdoors, sit back, decompress, cuddle by the wood-burning fireplace and take in the stunning view. Enjoy island tranquility at its best at any time of the year. And because you're staying at 'Orca' Bay Retreat, always keep an eye on the water.

While we are a private escape nestled in nature, we are less than ten minutes from the Sturdies Bay Ferry terminal and within minutes of Galiano's shops, restaurants, groceries and galleries.

Due to our proximity to sheer unfenced cliffs and fast moving currents, we are not suitable for small children.

About Lisa MacKinnon

Gary and I have had love affair with Galiano since my parents bought a cottage across the street over 20 years ago. Our two children have been privileged to spend their summers exploring the natural wonders and beauty of the island, and as adults, working at the marina and golf course. While we currently reside in Toronto, we spend as much time as possible on Galiano throughout every season. We especially enjoy the winter months which have their own special cozy, seductive and stormy appeal.

Why Lisa MacKinnon chose The Islands

This property is a gem. Formerly owned by our good friends, we consider ourselves grateful and fortunate to have been able to purchase it, and now to share its unique beauty and that of Galiano Island with others. We also love the island because of its close proximity to the mainland and Vancouver Island. There's nowhere else we'd want to be.

What makes this house unique

Fresh ocean air, incredible ocean views and unbelievable wildlife - whales, eagles, deer, seals and otters.

Looking out over Active Pass from the deck or living room is a transformative experience. The house, itself, is wonderfully comfortable and homey.

Barb and Larry's Favourite Place

  • 5 of 5

Lisa and Gary's home on Galiano is our favourite place to visit every year. We can't think of a more restful place than this special spot in Orca Bay. The views from every window, and deck areas are unsurpassed. We can sit for hours on the viewing deck waiting to see Orca's and we often do! Lisa has the house outfitted with everything you will need for a pampered stay. Pots of lovely flowers make the decks feel like home. Hiking Mount Galiano, just behind the house, means we don't have to drive anywhere for an adventure. A truly relaxing holiday! Thanks to Lisa and Gary for sharing this special spot in paradise, and making it so comfortable for your guests.

Beautiful home in a stunning location

  • 5 of 5

I could not get enough of the beautiful views from this lovely home. The views of Active Pass are amazing, and there are many places on the decks and from inside to rest and admire the scenery. I love the decor of this home, both comfy and elegant. A full kitchen with great cookware and even a full set of spices for easy meal making. And the library of books! So many and so little time. Lisa was fantastic - very quick at answering questions and very helpful- a perfect host. Next time we want to stay for more than a few days!

Very special oceanfront property

  • 5 of 5

We were so privileged to be able to spend more than a week at Orca Bay Retreat. We walked into this light-filled house and just said "wow." Sweeping views of Active Pass, ferry and boat traffic, neighboring eagles and seals, and (if you are lucky and in season) orcas kept us anchored to the decks from dawn until dusk unless we pulled ourselves away. A delightful flower, bee, and bird-filled back garden, beautifully and comfortably furnished house, and convenient location (a short drive to stores or Montague Harbor; short walk to beach access, and Mt. Galiano trail) means you basically can't go wrong staying here. Host Lisa is warm and communicative - she will go out of her way to answer any questions, meet your needs, and make sure you enjoy your time on Galiano. Bring binoculars and enjoy a book from the extensive library. One of the nicest rental experiences we've had - we would love to return.

Unbelievable views

  • 5 of 5

This place is pure magic! We loved having coffee in bed and opening the french doors to enjoy the endless views!

The home was so comfortable, clean and inviting. My husband spent hours taking pictures of the incredible garden in the back- so beautiful!

We were able to walk right out of the house and onto a trail to hike Mt. Galiano...about 5 miles round trip with a rewarding panoramic view at the top- so worth it! The hike to the beach was quick and fun- what a luxury to have a private beach so close.

We loved Galiano and plan to return soon! Lisa was so welcoming and easy to communicate with- we would love to stay here again!

Orca Bay Retreat - an absolutely delightful property

  • 5 of 5

Orca Bay Retreat has it all - amazing spaces inside and out! There are a number of patio tables set up and lounge chairs - all strategically placed to take advantage of sun and ocean and garden views. When you walk into the house the view actually takes your breath away! The whole ambience inside and out sets the mood for relaxation. The kitchen is completely outfitted for all your cooking needs - whatever you can think of ... it will be there. The property is close to Mount Galiano and Bluffs park and there is a lovely beach below - lots of places to take country walks. The boat traffic going through Active Pass is a fun pastime as well for viewing pleasure!

Lisa goes out of her way to keep communication up to date and has an extremely flexible attitude - clearly the guests needs and comforts are top of mind. It was such a pleasure to arrive to a spotless property with a bottle of wine waiting in the fridge. The only negative I can say is when you have to leave the place but hopefully we will return again and again.

Thankyou Lisa for everything!
