About Lisa MacKinnon
Gary and I have had love affair with Galiano since my parents bought a cottage across the street over 20 years ago. Our two children have been privileged to spend their summers exploring the natural wonders and beauty of the island, and as adults, working at the marina and golf course. While we currently reside in Toronto, we spend as much time as possible on Galiano throughout every season. We especially enjoy the winter months which have their own special cozy, seductive and stormy appeal.
Lisa MacKinnon purchased this House in 2013
Why Lisa MacKinnon chose Galiano Island
This property is a gem. Formerly owned by our good friends, we consider ourselves grateful and fortunate to have been able to purchase it, and now to share its unique beauty and that of Galiano Island with others. We also love the island because of its close proximity to the mainland and Vancouver Island. There's nowhere else we'd want to be.
What makes this House unique
Fresh ocean air, incredible ocean views and unbelievable wildlife - whales, eagles, deer, seals and otters. Looking out over Active Pass from the deck or living room is a transformative experience. The house, itself, is wonderfully comfortable and homey.

This home has a gorgeous view of Active Pass with interesting marine traffic, easy access to the beach and trail heads and a great location to access a grocery store, the WoodStone Manor and Pilgrimme restaurants. The island has an abundance of park land making for great hiking, walking and beach combing. The host was prompt to reply to all queries and proactive with house instructions and information about the island. We'll be back!
We want to go back!
What a wonderful home this is on Galiano Island. We have rented many VRBO homes over the years and this one truly stands out. As soon as opened the door after a long travel day, it was a moment of “Ahhhh, we are SO glad to be here!” The view, peacefulness, and serenity makes this home a wonderful getaway. The two of us were there for a week and it would have been very easy to stay longer. There are lots of walks and hikes for exploring, but hanging out enjoying this home is what we did a lot of. We planned on doing the majority of our meals cooking at the house and we were very pleased with how wonderfully appointed the kitchen was. I wished there would have been some olive oil, but it was my own fault for forgetting mine! My only suggestion is to make sure you arrive on a ferry that gets you there before dark. Galiano’s roads are quite dark and the deer seem to like hanging out right beside the road. All and all, Orca Bay Retreat is a beautiful spot to re-charge and enjoy the beauty of this quaint island. We’d love to visit again in the future. Thank you Lisa. You were a pleasure to work with and a huge help with logistics, ideas, and being a phone call/text away – just in case!
Beautiful and relaxing retreat!
We really the loved the property! The views from nearly every room were beautiful , especially the views from the deck, and the garden behind the cottage (with a swing) was also really nice. The cottage was clean and well-kept. It had everything we needed and the kitchen was fully stocked, including coffee! Lisa was easy to reach, if ever needed, and she was very welcoming. The area was quiet and relaxing. It wasn't a far drive to restaurants, shops, the bakery (the sourdough bread and cinnamon buns were delicious!) and the small grocery stores (less than 10min). We enjoyed many of the restaurants on Galiano Island but also appreciated being able to stay in and cook some meals while overlooking the ocean :) We didn't see any whales until our ferry ride home, but there was other marine life to watch and ferries passing by. If you are looking for a cozy, relaxing time away we highly recommend the Orca Bay retreat!
Restful, relaxing and absolutely stunning view!
We enjoyed our stay at Orca Bay Retreat very much. We saw a pod of orca's come through Active Pass, we saw deer, American gold finches, eagles, butterflies and hummingbirds galore! The decks offer the most stunning view we have ever had in a vacation rental with lots of water activity including seals sunning themselves on the rock around the buoy in the opening of the pass! On a cold day, the wood fireplace in the living room was so cozy while also having a great view of the water even when we couldn't sit outside. The bed is so comfortable and the linen's are all soft and luxurious! The kitchen is fully stocked and we enjoyed BBQing and having a great view from the kitchen while cooking as well! Private setting and beautiful flowers and mature trees surrounding the whole house! Galiano Island is a lovely place to visit and there are many interesting attractions including hikes and artsy type of shops to browse through. All in all, our vacation was everything that we had hoped for.
Relaxation and scenery on Galiano Island
We so enjoyed our stay at Lisa's property and would definately recommend staying here. The house is situated on a hill above the water and it's quite a beautiful and serene location. This setting invokes a sense of calm and relaxation. The house has all the amenities you will need for your stay. The garden is beautiful with lots of flowers and flowering trees. Lisa is very attentive and responsive and communicates well. So hard to come back to reality after staying at this wonderful property.
Lisa was amazing to work with; very personable, detail oriented and simple house rules/expectations. It felt like we were staying at a friends home. Her Galiano home is perfectly located for a quiet relaxing beautiful getaway.
