Nepenthe has a fully stocked kitchen with all new stainless steel appliances including a refrigerator, 5 top burner gas range with a convection oven, dishwasher, microwave, coffee maker, espresso machine, Flavia single cup coffee machine, toaster oven, regular toaster, blender, 2 crock-pots, lobster pot and even a turkey pan! The dinning room table seats 6 but another table can easily be added to accommodate 4 additional guests or if you prefer separate seating for the kids!
The spacious living room is heartwarming with another floor to ceiling pink granite fireplace, hardwood floors and french doors facing Norwood Cove and also provides access to the back deck. It is stocked with games, puzzles and a SMART flat screen TV, DVD player and an Apple box. The perfect place to relax after a long day of exploring.
The guest bedrooms are provided with extra pillows and blankets but also fans for those hot summer nights we occasionally have!
The master bedroom is complete with a king size bed, ceiling fan, flat screen TV and a balcony overlooking the mountains, Norwood Cove and many mornings a magnificent sunrise. About Mariah Pronovost
In 1994 I moved to Mount Desert Island to work for the summer and like many others never left. I love to travel and spend as much time as possible enjoying what's in my own back yard here hiking, biking, kayaking and my new passion sailing. Nothing makes me happier than living in the town I consider my "hometown" and now sharing my love and enthusiasm for these things with my daughter and being able to raise her in such a magical place. I love sharing my home with guests that are here to experience the life I get to live every day and hope they feel the same.
Mariah Pronovost purchased this House in 2014
Why Mariah Pronovost chose Southwest Harbor
As the description says Nepenthe Den is the "Heart of Southwest Harbor". The convenience of being in town and walking distance to everything and at the same time only minutes from Acadia National Park. Although Nepenthe Den is in town it is still mostly surrounded by trees and a lovely setting to sit back and enjoy nature. If you take a minute to observe you can watch a variety of native birds, deer, and butterflies meander the property. As a beginner Gardner I am always working on landscaping areas to create special places these animals can enjoy as well.
What makes this House unique
Many ask what does Nepenthe mean. Nepenthe is derived from a Greek word used to describe a state of mind where you can forget all pain and sorrow. Personally for myself the purchase of 241 Main Street was just that and thus 241 became Nepenthe Den. This is a place to relax, settle in and take the time to pay attention to the areas of life that need a little TLC. Whether it be spending more time with family, taking time out for yourself or just indulging in the abundant beauty of Mount Desert Island. Providing a peaceful place for visitors and guests as well as myself is what makes this property I believe to be truly unique.

Sports & Adventure Activities
The house is spacious & great layout. Nice extras too (starting firewood, coffee). Good fireplace I would highly recommend Mariah & her home.
Very nice and clean. Great location. Couches in living room very low and hard to get off of.
Twin beds a little too firm. Master king bed was great, foam egg crate made sleeping so nice. Need these on other beds too.
Very nice Home
The House was more then I could hope for! Lots of space, at home feel. Nice kitchen. The road noise is tuff if you like to sleep in.
Home is truly lovely, very well appointed. Loved the fireplace, outside deck and kitchen and living areas. Loved how close it was to the town and we could walk there if we wanted to. Excellent location and access to all of the beautiful trails in Acadia. Can't wait to return.
It was an incredible home away from home. It was far beyond our expectations in that it was lovely, comfy and had everything u could imagine to cook with, games to play, deck to enjoy and very accessible to all points in Mt Desert Island and beyond.
There is not a better home and location if u are interested in breathless Arcadia National Park!!!!!
Fabulous week at Nepenthe Den
We loved the house - we had plenty of space and everything we needed. Mariah is an excellent host. We biked to the causeway and walked into town. Echo Lake is also a quick drive or bus ride. We were so lucky with excellent weather and spent a lot of time hiking, biking carriage trails, and swimming.
With Acadia National Park being the main attraction to the area there is an abundance of activities to keep one occupied almost endlessly. The miles of trails for hiking, carriage roads for biking, scenic drives and miles of shoreline to kayak or sail just can't be done in a week or even an entire summer. However if during your stay you do start to feel you've had your fill of the great outdoors, or are maybe just too sore to put one foot in front of the other, there are many other activities to choose from. World famous gardens such as the Azalea, Asticou and the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, which is a private garden but can be viewed when scheduled ahead of time, are all worth seeing. There is even a small but very quaint garden, The Charlotte Rhoades Park and Butterfly Garden, just a minutes walk from Nepenthe. Museums, art galleries, fine dining, fun boutiques with work from local artists, wildlife excursions and of course some incredibly fabulous spas to choose from! What would a vacation be without treating yourself to an amazing massage or facial! For the sea fairing lover kayaking to one of the outer islands and enjoying your own private picnic or savoring a sunset sail with one of the local companies in town is a must. If a quiet night is NOT what you had in mind many of the restaurants and bars provide live music and dancing as well.
Venturing off Island, Mount Desert Island that is, to explore some equally beautiful areas such as Baxter State Park which can be done in a day trip or a very long day trip if you plan on hiking the highest peak in Maine Mt. Katahdin! The Eastern most point in the United States, Lubec, and crossing over into New Brunswick and visiting Campobello Island is also only a day trip away.
Although there is never a shortage of sights and activities spring through fall most people don't know the area can be enjoyed year round. Cross country skiing, snowshoeing, ice fishing and even snowmobiling is allowed on most of the paved park roads. Checking with park headquarters is advised ahead of time but with proper planning a sunset trip up Cadillac via snowmobile, or snowshoeing if you’re into that, can be pretty amazing. Whatever your agenda may be or the time of year you are able to visit this is definitely a place putting at the top of your list and making it happen.
