peaceful forest retreat along rugged volcanic coastline, on the windward side of the Big Island of Hawaii. Just 20 minutes south of Hilo International Airport. Located in Hawaiian Paradise Park Subdivision, our home is in a safe, friendly, local neighborhood where you can walk, bike and enjoy the ocean scenery, you can even fish off the ocean cliffs nearby. Excellent for the whole family or perfect for a romantic getaway.

Hale Kiele is an immaculate cottage with fully equipped kitchen, full bath with tub & shower, one bedroom with a comfy King size mattress. Flat screen TV, comfortable double futon couch in living area and large lanai with seating for 4 and your hammock awaits on your personal bedroom lanai. Guests will enjoy the sweet trade winds; being surrounded by orchids, ferns and native Ohia trees. Listen to the sound of waves and venture a 5 minute walk to the ocean cliffs and view magnificent sun and moon rises out of the Pacific. Take a 4 1/2 mile hike to Shipman's/Ha'ena Beach.

During your stay take a 30 minute scenic drive up to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Visit Mauna Kea’au at 13,803 ft. the summit of the world's most active volcano, Kilauea. You can learn about our unique shield volcanoes and see how our islands are being created at the Jaggar Museum and Visitor Center. View ancient and active lava flows depending on activity and weather conditions.

Tour the rim of the caldera at the summit and hike into a pit crater, then stroll through a 300 year old native rain forest and experience a lava tube. For the hungry hiker there are cafes, restaurants and a winery, all at Volcano Village, a charming community just outside of the park.

Take another day to discover old Hawaii. Visit Kalapana village, plant a coconut on Hawaii's newest Black Sand Beach created by lava flows in the 90's. Visit the pottery and glass art shop. Don't miss FREE Live Hawaiian Music outdoors here every Wed. and Fri. night and enjoy local treats at the farmers market and food stands, featuring a variety including vegan and vegetarian fare. On the way there, you'll pass the historical Star Of The Sea painted church. Down the coast you may be able to see a plume of steam rising where lava is flowing into the ocean!

Leisurely continue north along the coastline, there are many parks and breathtaking scenery. Experience exciting Zip Line Aventures North of Hilo, 5 total on the Big Island. You can often see the green sea turtles along the shore. At Pohoiki Bay you might catch some of the best surfers on the island. Fishermen launch their boats from the ramp here. Next you'll come to Ahalanui State Park. This is a must! Bring your swimsuit and relax in the warm waters.

This pond is heated by volcanic thermal vents. It is an ancient place of healing created and used for generations by Hawaiians. Once refreshed head towards Pahoa and take time to walk through Lava Tree State Park with it's fascinating tree molds and tranquil paths. Last stop is historic Pahoa town, a colorful community where you can dine or take out fresh fish, BBQ, Chinese, Italian, Mexican or Thai cuisine.

Include charming, eclectic Hilo Town in your itinerary. Second largest community in Hawaii. Explore Hilo's unique history on bay front at the Pacific Tsunami Museum. Down the street you will be among friendly people as you wander through the stands of the Hilo Farmers Market. Sample Hawaiian food, fresh, hot tamales and Filipino desserts! You can purchase fresh fish, tropical flowers, organic produce and exotic seasonal fruits to enjoy. You will find yourself in lush botanical gardens, waterfalls and the largest Japanese Garden in the USA. Enjoy snorkeling at Richardson's Beach, Hilo's own black sand beach. Spot dolphins, whales and swim with turtles. Then come home to your own private retreat where you can rest up for your next island adventure!

I invite you to come and enjoy paradise!

Why Loleina chose Keaau

We chose beautiful Kaloli Point area because it's rural, safe, and friendly. Towns are easily accessible, but still has that small 'coastal community feel'.

What makes this cottage unique

It's always lush and green here! We are right in the middle of the best part of the the Windward side of the Island. Beautiful Hilo to the North and tropical Kalapana to the South. There is so much history here in the 'Aina (land).

A cozy little getaway

  • 4 of 5

A nice, compact guest house with everything you could need, including snorkelling gear, coolers, and a hammock! I gave 4 stars only because my daughter was a little uncomfortable with the bugs (which I knew about, having read the reviews, and I had warned her, but she was still freaked out. She did LOVE the geckos in the house though). And yes the frogs are loud at night, and the birds (including a rooster) are loud in the morning, but we were so tired from all the exploring during the day that we had no problem falling asleep!

The house is pretty remote so a rental car is a must, but it is a good base for exploring Hilo, the hot spring beaches and Volcanoes National Park.

Owner's Response: Yes we are in the tropics, glad to hear those little beetles that are attracted to light weren’t too bothersome. They only come around certain times of the year. Glad you did have fun exploring and visiting the volcano! Have a Happy Easter and mahalo for the gift of Canadian maple syrup.

A cozy 1 bedroom getaway in a unique corner of the World

  • 5 of 5

We spent nearly 2 weeks at this property recently and since I was recovering from a 5 day hospital stay we couldn't avail ourselves of many of the opportunities to explore the area and take in the beauty of it.

The unit is very well furnished and very clean with a comfortable king bed and all the kitchen utensils that you will need. The lofted ceilings and the lanai complete with a hammock were some of my favorite features.

The owners who live very near couldn't have been more responsive to any problem or request we had. Also, their concern for our health issues were evident, even including offering to drive us to local businesses!

Quiet but you can hear rooster crowing every morning. You have to love gecko to stay at the cottag.

  • 4 of 5

Even though it is not close by the market or restaurants. You can reach easily most of the favourite spots like volcano park, Waiipo, Akaka falls and so on. Especially the trail to Shipman beach

starts only few blocks away from the cottage. It is small but very nice beach where You will meet turtles and geese. There is no restrooms though.

can meet turtles and geese there.

Owner's Response: Glad you enjoyed your stay! Yes we are about 9 miles to restaurants but that’s the beauty of being in a quiet, costal home. I’m so glad you hiked to Shipmans Beach! We enjoyed it also. Mahalo nui until we meet again

Beautiful, private, perfect!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I stayed here for our 4 year anniversary trip. This was our first time to the island, and we wanted to be somewhere more secluded and away from tourists. This place was VERY clean, open, and tucked away. It was exactly what we were looking for. There was a lot of rain during our stay, but we expected that. If you love rain like we do, then this was a special treat! We awoke to the sound of local roosters, and drifted off to the beautiful singing of the coqui frogs. There are geckos that live in the home and eat the bugs, so if you don’t like nature this isn’t the place for you. We will definitely be back and would love to stay here again!!!!!!!!! Mahalo for the easy instructions, perfect accommodations, and everything in between!! -Autumn & Jesseca
