During your stay take a 30 minute scenic drive up to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park at 4000 ft., the summit of the world's most active volcano, Kilauea. You can learn about our unique shield volcanoes and see how our islands are being created at the Jaggar Museum and Visitor Center. View ancient and active lava flows depending on activity and weather conditions.

Tour the rim of the caldera at the summit and hike into a pit crater, then stroll through a 300 year old native rain forest and experience a lava tube. For the hungry hiker there are cafes, restaurants and a winery, all at Volcano Village, a charming community just outside of the park.

Take another day to discover old Hawaii. Visit Kalapana village, plant a coconut on Hawaii's newest Black Sand Beach created by lava flows in the 90's. Visit the pottery and glass art shop. Don't miss FREE Live Hawaiian Music outdoors here every Wed. and Fri. night and enjoy local treats at the farmers market and food stands, featuring a variety including vegan and vegetarian fare. On the way there, you'll pass the historical Star Of The Sea painted church. Down the coast you may be able to see a plume of steam rising where lava is flowing into the ocean!

Leisurely continue north along the coastline, there are many parks and breathtaking scenery. Experience exciting Zip Line Aventures North of Hilo, 5 total on the Big Island. You can often see the green sea turtles along the shore. At Pohoiki Bay you might catch some of the best surfers on the island. Fishermen launch their boats from the ramp here. Next you'll come to Ahalanui State Park. This is a must! Bring your swimsuit and relax in the warm waters.

This pond is heated by volcanic thermal vents. It is an ancient place of healing created and used for generations by Hawaiians. Once refreshed head towards Pahoa and take time to walk through Lava Tree State Park with it's fascinating tree molds and tranquil paths. Last stop is historic Pahoa town, a colorful community where you can dine or take out fresh fish, BBQ, Chinese, Italian, Mexican or Thai cuisine.

Include charming, eclectic Hilo Town in your itinerary. Second largest community in Hawaii. Explore Hilo's unique history on bay front at the Pacific Tsunami Museum. Down the street you will be among friendly people as you wander through the stands of the Hilo Farmers Market. Sample Hawaiian food, fresh, hot tamales and Filipino desserts! You can purchase fresh fish, tropical flowers, organic produce and exotic seasonal fruits to enjoy. You will find yourself in lush botanical gardens, waterfalls and the largest Japanese Garden in the USA. Enjoy snorkeling at Richardson's Beach, Hilo's own black sand beach. Spot dolphins, whales and swim with turtles. Then come home to your own private retreat where you can rest up for your next island adventure!

About Loleina

I am originally from Iowa and Leland is a Native of Hawaii, Army-Retired. We fell in love with the life style and beauty of the Big Island. Our wonderful Ohana, Ui'lani and Stan will enjoy assisting you. We hope that you will enjoy our Aloha and our home,

Mahalo, Elizabeth and Leland

Loleina purchased this cottage in 2011

Why Loleina chose Keaau

We chose beautiful Kaloli Point area because it's rural, safe, and friendly. Towns are easily accessible, but still has that small 'coastal community feel'.

What makes this cottage unique

It's always lush and green here! We are right in the middle of the best part of the the Windward side of the Island. Beautiful Hilo to the North and tropical Kalapana to the South. There is so much history here in the 'Aina (land).

Lovely Ohana and the owner is a great example of the aloha spirit!

  • 5 of 5

This is an adorable Ohana. We really enjoyed the screened back porch and the hammock porch.

We were there in July so it was very hot when we arrived but cooled down quickly as the outside temperature cooled. We also enjoyed birdwatching the Ohia trees.

The sweet owner came over in the morning and brought us a fresh pineapple for breakfast.

If you want a private country place close to Hilo this is the place for you!

Paradise Indeed!

  • 4 of 5

The best of this place was the sounds of nature! The coqui frogs sing their lullaby every night. then you can hear the rain... If you enjoy these sound, this a great place to stay. The place was clean and very pleasant. It can get a little hot in the afternoons, but once the sun goes down the place cools down. the best place for the afternoon and evening is the hammock in the lanai off the bedroom!

Quiet and Peaceful....

  • 4 of 5

My husband and I stayed at this property from June 10th to the 16th, 2017....it is a beautiful rental, surrounded by typical Hilo landscaping. We gave it a 4 for only one reason.....there was no air conditioning. We were unable to sleep in due to the heat and had to stay gone all day until it cooled down. Although there are fans throughout, it did not cool the place enough to make it comfortable to sleep all through the night. Otherwise,

everything was provided, as stated in rental information.

Owner's Response: Thank you Tammy for your review and compliment on the rental. Here in the tropics, with the humidity, it can get warm in the afternoon hours, (thank you global warming😄) We live close by to the rental also and while the majority of people here do not have air, including us, this is a future upgrade we are considering. Mahalo nui, Loleina

Ideal place to enjoy the Big Island

  • 5 of 5

A great house off the beaten path and U'ilani was responsive to everything from beginning to end. The bedroom at night with the frogs and rain was ideallic. Hammock on the lanai can't be beat. We'll be back!

We loved everything about our stay in the tree house. U'ilani was very kind and quick to answer emails and texts and the tree house itself was very well maintained, well equipped, and just lovely. I LOVED the screened in lanai, with a huge hammock. I would read out there most mornings, listening to the rain or the birds. My husband and I went on a run one morning and found that there was a beautiful shoreline access less than a quarter mile away. The location was off the beaten path, I think it was an easy 20 minutes to get to restaurants and stores, but the location really was ideal. The bedding was also extremely comfortable, which is so important when you have an active vacation. We hiked almost 16 miles all over Volcano National Park one day, and it was so nice to come home to a good night's sleep! Another cool thing was that the water came from a catchment system, I thought that was pretty cool. There was drinking water provided, since the water from the taps was not drinkable. We are from Southern California, which is always in some state of drought, so the catchment system was something new and interesting to me.

My husband I would definitely recommend staying at this accommodation . We were only there 3 nights and were sad to leave. Thank you U'ilani for making our stay in paradise truly memorable.
