Brighter in the summer
Fresh flowers and music playing on the TV were a lovely welcome to this little old cottage on the outskirts of Ganges. Shops and restaurants in the town are just a few minutes’ walk from the front door. The downside of this is that there is a certain amount of traffic noise as the main road into town is close by the back of the house (the bedroom). There is a lovely view over Ganges harbour and distant hills from the living room and kitchen. However, if you plan to cook dinner for yourself, I recommend staying here when the days are longer than they were in January, as the kitchen is very dark. I would imagine, however, that in the summer the big south-facing windows in the living room and kitchen would make the cottage nice and bright, and the expansive deck would be a lovely place to hang out. Also, note that, if you are sensitive to light in the bedroom, there was no curtain over the small side bedroom window, which was not a problem in January but could make it hard to sleep during the longer days of summer.
Thank you for the feedback. We really appreciate it as we are always trying to make everything the best we can. Agreed, The kitchen is super light all summer long, however I now see that in the depths of winter, it does become pitch black earlier outside which obviously isn't helpful. I believe I should add extra light for that reason during the winter months. The bedroom high window is facing out to a canopy of trees and it is high which allows no one to see in. We looked at adding an extra curtain, but thought it didn't look as nice in the room. I've asked people in the past if it was a problem but everyone was happy with it. However, its definitely on my radar again and will keep a close watch of feelings on it. Again, I really appreciate feedback as it definitely helps us. Many many thanks.
Great little home close to everything in Ganges.
We enjoyed our time here very much
Great place and perfect location
We really enjoyed our stay. Walking distance to great restaurants, shops and the wonderful Saturday market. Would definitely recommend this place to anyone!
Comfortable lodgings in fabulous setting
This is our second time staying in this lovely bungalow. We loved it so much on our first visit two years ago that we had to return.
You can't beat the location of this bungalow. The views from the kitchen and couch are breathtaking. Very short walk to the amazing Saturday Market and easy walk to downtown shops and groceries. Beautiful Mouat park and hikes are very close to the house.
We've had a car both times, which makes exploring the island a breeze. This bungalow would be nicely situated for those without a vehicle, too. You could catch the shuttle a short walk away by the Visitor's Centre.
Kitchen is well-outfitted with everything you'll need as far as kitchen ware, in case you're preparing most of your own meals as we do. Grocery stores have a good selection of food, reasonably priced, so you'll not feel like you have to do without. Ironically, incredibly difficult to find locally-raised lamb (next to impossible in the markets). We recommend picking up some from Sunset Farm while you're on the north end of the island.
Washer and dryer in the bathroom is incredibly handy, particularly if you've gotten a little damp following a day of kayaking or a strenuous hike. Really appreciated that laundry soap was provided. Bathroom is also stocked with hairdryer, shampoo and conditioner, clothes iron... so you really can get away with bringing the minimum with you.
Both times, our daughter has come along (teen) and slept on the fold out pads in the living room. Plenty of room behind the living room couch to accommodate its use as a sleeping area. We've never felt cramped.
Our first visit, we didn't notice any noise from upstairs, though there was someone staying there concurrently. This visit, we could hear some of the footsteps and movement from the folks staying upstairs. If you're a light sleeper and a night owl and the folks upstairs are heavy-footed and up very early, it's possible this would bother you. It wasn't a problem for us; I just like folks to know all of the plusses and minuses when I'm making a recommendation.
Bungalow is incredibly neat and clean. Owner is very responsive and helpful. Outside areas are beautiful (addition of the grill this visit was fantastic!!). We highly recommend staying here and will look forward to returning again.
We rented both units for a family of 4 adults. Lovely spot! Walking distance to just about everything. Melodie made sure that we had everything we needed. Exactly as shown in the pictures. Lots of wildlife can be seen from the backyard. Eagles, hummingbirds, deer, harbor seals and harbor swans. Couldn't ask for anything better!
A charmer in Ganges harbor
The Garden Suite is co-located on the edge of Ganges town and on one of the sheltered bays that comprise its harbor. The property has all amenities to make a short-term or long-term stay comfortable. Cooking your own food is almost as easy as going out. Adequate WIFI for communications and a wide selection of CATV channels are available along with new laundry facilities and a comfortable bed. It is possible to walk to the many coffee shops, restaurants, galleries, grocery store and bank branches bordering the harbor along Lower Ganges Road plus the market day events held on Saturdays and Tuesdays in Centennial Park just a couple of hundred yards distant. Embe Bakery directly across the street offers fresh baked goods and sandwiches. Kayaking right out of the back gate to the harbor marinas or to the islets in the approach is relaxing and a great way to view the sea birds and seals. We brought along our own kayaks and bicycles and employed them both with very satisfying results. Such equipment can be rented in town (kayaks right next door). For those not so adventurous it is possible to watch all of the harbor traffic come and go right from the porch. We highly recommend this property as a base to explore Salt Spring Island for couples even with a child or two.
