About the property

A Great Place For Weekend Retreat, Or A Farm, Bicycle, Or Outdoor Vacation.

Vashon Island is a progressive, creative community, population 11,000 with a rural character in the midst of a vibrant metropolitan region. Seattle is accessible by the Washington State car ferry and by the King County water taxi that takes passengers directly to downtown. For more information about Vashon see www.vashonchamber.com and Wikipedia. Seattle is a prosperous city, entrepreneurial hub (Amazon, Nordstrom, Starbucks etc) with excellent food, music, theater and art.

Experience farm life and the spectacular beauty of the Pacific Northwest. You can learn about organic farm methods, make sunflower bouquets, pick fresh raspberries for breakfast one moment and explore Seattle or hike Mt. Rainier the next.

All this is possible from our cottage set in fields of sunflower and lavender, surrounded by Madrona, chestnut and walnut trees. Very quiet and private with high ceilings, lots of light and all the comforts of home: strong cellular service, wi-fi, compact kitchen with washer/dryer. our house is 200 feet away. Sleeps 2; 1 bedroom, toilet, shower, and hydronic heating. Located on Vashon Island in Puget Sound a ferry ride away from Seattle.

The property adjoins the 350 acre Maury Marine Park, a natural preserve offering a fifteen minute walk to the beach and miles of walking along Puget Sound. There are astounding views of Mt Rainier. Bicycling, kayaking, hiking, and horseback riding and summer swimming at the public pool are all available directly from the cottage or a short drive away. Many farm stands offer organically gown produce and eggs, and the town of Vashon has an excellent market, a range of restaurants and a first run movie theater. Two famous national parks, Olympic and Mt. Rainier, as well as Pacific Ocean beaches are a few hours' drive away. Deep rain forests, alpine meadows, glaciated peaks and remote beaches await.

About Dan Carlson and Sheri Reder

Sheri and Dan have lived on this property since 1982. We have raised our family here, started a small farm, and been involved in civic life. We love the out of doors and are avid bicyclists and hikers. Sheri develops new long term care options for the VA and Dan teaches at the University of Washington.

Dan Carlson and Sheri Reder purchased this cottage in 1978

Why Dan Carlson and Sheri Reder chose Puget Sound North

We bought this property because it has beautiful views, excellent soil for farming, and while rural and private was still close to Seattle where we continued our professions.

What makes this cottage unique

Kareli farm is located in a beautiful, peaceful environment where you can engage in an array of outdoor activities or just relax. Yet, it is only a short ferry ride from Seattle with a host of arts, restaurants, and shopping options.

Quiet, peaceful but needs a deep cleaning

  • 3 of 5

My husband and I spend a romantic weekend on Vashon Island. We had a very nice time walking on the beach (it is 15-20 min walk from this cottage), reading, and just being away from the daily routine. However, the cottage was not very well cleaned. Plates and coffee machine were all covered in spots and cups had dark circles from coffee or tea. It was dusty. Towels were not soft and very unpleasant to use, no paper towels. The city with all restaurants is about 20 minutes by car. I am very honest in my review. This place is very nice but needs some basic cleaning to make it feel like home.

Lovely, quiet retreat

  • 5 of 5

Wonderful little cabin in isolated corner of Maury Island. The setting is idyllic, just enough room inside to relax with an expansive private front yard to sit and read a book. Kitchen is sized for light cooking. The island has so many things to do you will be exhausted at the end of each day, ready for a quiet evening in the country.

Perfect Island Escape

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was a great escape from Seattle for the weekend. Very comfortable and in a great location to explore the Maury Island Marine Park and Point Robinson. Also easy to get to KVI beach and town. Very serene surroundings. Loved the hammock on the property. Quiet and peaceful. A great place to stay.

A bit disappointed

  • 3 of 5

This Is a cute little place out in the country that has potential but we did find that it lacked some amenities. There is limited privacy because there are few window coverings and the ones in the bedroom are see through at night. There is nothing comfortable to sit on, no sofa, no arm chair. The only mirror is a small mirror in the kitchen where you must blow dry your hair in the same place that you are cooking breakfast. I booked the place with my mother because we were told they could provide a futon for me to sleep on. (I was thinking futon with frame) When we arrived the owner, who is a nice man, delivered a mattress in a bag that I could use to sleep on the floor. I was a little taken aback because it was stained and so thin it was like laying on a rock. However, it did, after covering it with everything we could find, serve to make the rather hard bed more comfortable. So, we ended up sharing the bed together. The toilet, in a closet with the ceiling open to the room (forget privacy) and the shower, also in a closet, with no hooks for clothes or towels, took some getting used to, especially since the window directly across from the shower area has no covering. The lack of window coverings was rather awkward when the workers showed up to pick flowers. I know I am making this place sound terrible, but it is actually a cute little place that just requires putting up with some rather quirky things. My primary disappointment was that I felt things weren't communicated quite clearly and I think that the owner is charging too much for the actual amenities. We did enjoy out visit to the island very much and appreciated being surrounded by the farm.

Owner's Response: We would like all our guests to have a five-star experience. It sounds like there was a mismatch in expectations in this instance. The cottage has one lovely queen bed ideal for a single adult or a couple. We also have a roll-up latex mattress which can be placed on the floor for a small child, but this was not a good option for two independent adults. We ordered new bedroom shades today; and we look forward to hosting new and returning guests in our farm cottage.

Small Slice of Heaven

  • 5 of 5

In the simplest terms, this cottage provides everything you need to make your visit to Vashon complete. Set outside of town, the tranquil, serene surroundings of nature will have you truly connected as city hustle and bustle fade away. A welcoming environment and comfortable setting, just to enjoy morning coffee out in the patio area while surrounded by lavender and sunflower fields was the best part. You have a beautiful shore hike within walking distance and plenty of bird watching. Should you need to run to town, you are all of 15 minutes away where there is a variety of activities to make your stay complete. The owner was attentive but also respected my privacy during my stay. I would absolutely recommend and return to this property.

If you like open space, big sky, natural environment, farming, flowers, fresh fruits and vegetables, bicycling in the countryside, kayaking, long walks on the beach or on forested trails, , this cottage experience is for you. It is quiet; it is safe. Although you can take a car ferry or a passenger boat directly to downtown Seattle, if the primary thing you are looking for is an urban experience – shopping malls, art museums, restaurants and cafes, clubs – this cottage is not for you.

The cottage is about 350 sq ft. It has a lot of volume from vaulted ceilings, and a lot of light from the many windows, and porous connection between indoor and out. It perfectly accommodates two people and can accommodate two adults and a small child, but not more. The bedroom has a queen bed and there is a roll-out natural latex topper for a child. It’s a magical place for kids that like the outdoors; they can run around without the fear of cars and traffic.

Most visitors will need a car to get to our cottage and to drive to the town of Vashon where there are supermarkets, a movie theater, and a handful of restaurants and small shops. Bicyclists, however, can do all this without the internal combustion engine. We offer a 5% discount off the rental rate for bicyclists (in the form of a refund at the end of your stay). For an urban experience your car or bicycle or the local bus can take you to the ferry dock for a 15-25 minute ride to Seattle.

The cottage is located in a beautiful field – in spring the apple and pear trees are in bloom, in summer lavender, sunflowers, and raspberries are ready, in fall grapes, apples and pears ripen. It is a place to keep the noise down so you can hear the owls at night. At the same time excellent cell reception and wifi can keep you connected to the wireless world when you want it. Our house is on the same property so visitors are not far from help or advice if they need it.

The cottage can be a weekend escape from the city, an agri-tourism visit to a small farm, a writer’s retreat, or a base for exploring the Pacific Northwest.
