About Tom Coleman
I am a retired licensed general contractor. My wife is also retired. We are both originally from Chicago, and moved out to Northern California back in the 70s. I enjoy baking bread in our pizza oven, hiking, pouring wine at a local winery, traveling and cooking. My wife is an artist who dabbles in oil painting, mosaics and ceramics. We both enjoy cooking, traveling and visiting the fantastic local Sonoma wineries and many excellent restaurants. We can offer numerous suggestions and recommendations for local attractions.
Tom Coleman purchased this Cottage in 2007
Why Tom Coleman chose Sonoma County
The first time I saw this property, I fell in love with the views of the Sonoma hills. It reminded me of traveling and hiking through Ireland and England.
What makes this Cottage unique
Seeing lots of stars at night. Watching the sun and the full moon come up from the cottage deck. Harvesting fresh vegetables and fruit from our gardens. Sitting quietly in our peaceful rock garden or swinging in the hammock. Staring out at the views of the Sonoma mountains. Reading on the covered back deck. Making homemade pizzas in our wood fired pizza oven. Smelling the lavender in the summer and jasmine in the spring.

Charming and quaint cottage
The cottage is really lovely. It has everything you could possibly need and is beautifully decorated. Tom and Carol have put a lot of tlc and thought into furnishing and decorating the cottage, utilizing historic reclaimed materials and antiques and fun touches, to make it comfortable, relaxing and unique. There are also two great seating areas outside the cottage where you can relax, unwind and enjoy the peace and quiet. Tom and Carol are very accommodating and thoughtful hosts. Tom had left us a bottle of Zinfandel from Cline Cellars and Carol had made fresh scone dough that we baked in the morning for breakfast; both were delicious! The cottage is also in a great location, away from the hustle and bustle but not far from things to do and there is lots to do in the area. We'd highly recommend staying at the cottage and would love to come back again; it really did feel like a place you wanted to come home to. Thanks for a wonderful time Tom and Carol!
Quiet getaway; easy access to tour the region
A fun cottage to stay in and bigger than it looks in the photos. It’s located in an area full of ranchettes; you wake up to the sounds of both chickens and wild turkeys. From the cottage deck, we saw a young mule deer roam through the next-door pasture. It’s 10 minutes north of Petaluma and is a great spot to reach the Sonoma vineyards to the east and the coast to the west. Tom and Carol are responsive hosts.
Quiet, Private and Charming!
Thank you Carol and Tom.
Your Country Cottage was just what the doctor ordered. The decks are so comfortable and your decorating aesthetic is marvelous. I will return again in the future for needed R & R.
Thank you so much for your kind review Tim. We are so happy that you enjoyed yourself and had a restful stay. We would be delighted to host you again so do contact us when you find yourself needing a quiet escape. Thanks again.
A Little Home Away From Home
We loved this lovely little cottage in the Petaluma countryside. Well-built, filled with every comfort , we plan to go back in the near future, we loved it that much! Our hosts were generous and thoughtful and wanted to make sure we had what we needed. Fresh-made scones were so delicious-what at treat. Lots of books to read and the kitchen is well-outfitted, plus a grill outside. Lots of benches to enjoy nature and very quiet. The cottage is close to downtown and all that's offered there, but after a day of sightseeing, how wonderful to me back "home"! Very comfortable bed, comfy terry robes, flat screen tv: it's all there. Couldn't ask for more. It's a jewel and so are the hosts.
We'll be back, and soon.
Thank you so much for such a great review. We truly enjoyed hosting you both in our cottage. We hope it was a lovely birthday celebration. Anytime you want to return, the cottage will be waiting for you. Thank you also for the very sweet note which will be framed! We appreciate it.
I had a wonderful and memorable stay at this lovely, comfy, cozy well appointed cottage. I was in Petaluma to attend a course that was intense. The Cottage was my sanctuary and wiped the stresses of the day away. It is private, quiet, peaceful and surrounded by nature. The layout is open with high ceilings and plenty of light. There is a deck off the main room overlooking the property that is perfect to enjoy a morning coffee with one of Carol’s homemade scones or a glass of wine in the evening. The fireplace provided warmth on chilly nights. Tom and Carol are the perfect hosts and two of the nicest people I’ve ever met. Should I return to the area, I will be sure to stay here again.
Thank you so much for such a lovely review. We really appreciate your kind words. We so enjoyed having you stay in our cottage and look forward to your next visit. Sonoma, our neighbor in the pasture, looks forward to another visit from you too. Take good care.
Perfect hideaway in Petaluma
Why stay in a generic hotel room when you can have your own "home!" We only got to spend a couple of days at this wonderful cottage and would go back in a heartbeat! The hosts communicated regularly before our trip - even gave us weather forecasts so we would pack appropriately! The host met us upon our arrival and showed us around the charming cottage - it's everything you need for your home away from home. You are next door to the hosts, but it was very quiet the whole time we were there and felt essentially alone. Beautifully decorated with antiques, books, pictures etc - we didn't even have time to look at everything. Fully functioning kitchen, large bed, private bathroom, large TV, private decks. I wish we'd had more time to just enjoy the cottage itself. The attention to detail is amazing, right down to the gourmet coffee that you can make at your leisure. And, of course, Carol's wonderful homemade blueberry scones! We highly recommend a visit to funky downtown Petaluma - cute stores and wonderful restaurants. Thanks Tom and Carol - you're our go-to place whenever we're back in the area!
Thanks for your kind review, Tracy. I'm glad you were able to join us for a few days recently, and hope you had a good time exploring Sonoma County and particularly Petaluma. Great weather, great restaurants, scores of wineries and breweries (Lagunitas headquarters is 5 minutes away!) and you got to race cars!
Hope to see you again soon. The scones will be waiting for you.

We are located near numerous wineries and also several breweries including Lagunitas, Hen House and 101 North Brewing. If you enjoy walking, Shollenberger Park offers a flat 2 mile walk or stroll with many birds and views to enjoy. Helen Putnam Park offers hills for those who are seeking a more challenging hike. Also, Armstrong woods is a lovely place for hiking.
