Perfect hideaway in Petaluma

  • 5 of 5

Why stay in a generic hotel room when you can have your own "home!" We only got to spend a couple of days at this wonderful cottage and would go back in a heartbeat! The hosts communicated regularly before our trip - even gave us weather forecasts so we would pack appropriately! The host met us upon our arrival and showed us around the charming cottage - it's everything you need for your home away from home. You are next door to the hosts, but it was very quiet the whole time we were there and felt essentially alone. Beautifully decorated with antiques, books, pictures etc - we didn't even have time to look at everything. Fully functioning kitchen, large bed, private bathroom, large TV, private decks. I wish we'd had more time to just enjoy the cottage itself. The attention to detail is amazing, right down to the gourmet coffee that you can make at your leisure. And, of course, Carol's wonderful homemade blueberry scones! We highly recommend a visit to funky downtown Petaluma - cute stores and wonderful restaurants. Thanks Tom and Carol - you're our go-to place whenever we're back in the area!

Owner's Response: Thanks for your kind review, Tracy. I'm glad you were able to join us for a few days recently, and hope you had a good time exploring Sonoma County and particularly Petaluma. Great weather, great restaurants, scores of wineries and breweries (Lagunitas headquarters is 5 minutes away!) and you got to race cars! Hope to see you again soon. The scones will be waiting for you. Tom and Carol

Amazing stay to decompress!

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at the cottage was perfect. Thank you Tom and Carol, this was exactly the type of vacation my husband and I were in need of. The location is perfect! Quiet, cool (almost cold) evenings, endless scenic drives, and the ocean near enough to travel to. Best chowder in Bodega Bay! Endless wineries in the area or drive to Alexander or Napa Valley within an hour. The little kitchen had everything we needed for us to prepare and share relaxing evening meals together. The cottage is near the main house but absolute privacy is afforded to guests. Tom and Carol were accommodating and most gracious hosts. Thank you both for your generosity especially the great coffee and scones. My only regret was that the sparkling wine didn't fit in my case. Please enjoy for me. Happy 4th of July!

Perfect cottage!

  • 5 of 5

This cottage was perfectly relaxing and tranquil. I found it to be perfect as an artist’s retreat—with its high ceilings it’s a wonderful space in which to practice (in my case, singing and clarinet), and the cottage is so well-soundproofed that the hosts reported not hearing me once. The Netflix subscription was an unexpected plus (as I was able to catch up with the new House of Cards season). The surroundings are peaceful; you occasionally hear the hosts’ chickens clucking in their henhouse when you are sitting on the back porch; otherwise, only crickets, frogs, and the occasional horse neighing. There were a couple of days I was perfectly happy to stay in the cottage all day. I'm staying there later this month, and I'm counting the days until I return. Whether you are looking for a base of operations or a hideaway, this cottage is it!

Wonderful Hospitality

  • 5 of 5

This was a terrific place to crash for a busy BottleRock weekend in the Wine Country. Tom and Carol were incredibly gracious hosts, greeting me with a batch of dough to make fresh Cranberry Scones (they were INCREDIBLE), and offering a quiet cottage completely separate from the main house. Bedding and linens were all VERY nice (my #1 criteria for any hotel or VRBO), a full kitchen completely stocked with excellent coffee......I could not have done better for my trip to Napa.

Only downside is it is about 30-40 minutes drive to the heart of Napa or you'll have to keep your wine consumption in check! But this was a terrific place to stay, and I would come again in a heartbeat!

Delightful respite!

  • 5 of 5

Combine two creative, caring hosts with a cozy cottage designed and outfitted to meet your every need and you have a wonderful country getaway, yet so close to the Sonoma-Napa wineries, the Pacific coast and the delights of San Francisco. Oh, and did I forget to mention the fresh blueberry scones ready to bake and the wine to uncork! Thank you!

About Tom Coleman

I am a retired licensed general contractor. My wife is also retired. We are both originally from Chicago, and moved out to Northern California back in the 70s. I enjoy baking bread in our pizza oven, hiking, pouring wine at a local winery, traveling and cooking. My wife is an artist who dabbles in oil painting, mosaics and ceramics. We both enjoy cooking, traveling and visiting the fantastic local Sonoma wineries and many excellent restaurants. We can offer lots of suggestions and recommendations for local attractions.

Why Tom Coleman chose Petaluma

The first time I saw this property, I fell in love with the views of the Sonoma hills. It reminded me of traveling and hiking through Ireland and England.

What makes this cottage unique

Seeing lots of stars at night. Watching the sun and the full moon come up. Fresh eggs from our chicken coop during the Spring and Summer. Harvesting fresh vegetables and fruit from our gardens. Sitting quietly in our peaceful rock garden or swinging in the hammock. Staring out at the views of the Sonoma mountains. Reading on the covered back deck. Making homemade pizzas in our wood fired pizza oven. Smelling the lavender in the summer and jasmine in the spring.
