About the property

4 Bedroom House sleeps 15 or 3 Bedroom Hand-hewn Log Cabin sleeps 14

We have owned our property since 1970 and in 1982 opened an American Youth Hostel with Indian teepee, covered wagons and have the islands only legal campground. We operated for 30 years and then we dropped the hostel status. We are now just a campground and lodging. Our cabin is called the Lavender Duck Inn and the main house is known as the Rusty Buffalo. Both are part of our VRBO listing and give guests an opportunity to sleep 29 people within our two lodgings plus extra lodging in our summer teepees. We also have a 5000 sq ft recreational barn that offers a great work shop for retreats, weddings and reunions.

About Judy Mulhair

I have lived on Vashon for 43 years. Divorced in 1980 I created the hostel called the AYH Ranch ( American Youth Hostel). We were part of the International Organization for 27years then broke off and served as an independent hostel for 3 years. We have since dropped the hostel status and operate as lodging and Vashon's only legal campground.

I raised my two boys while operating the hostel and as they grew, they became managers too. One has gone on to create his new business in the Seattle area called 'Apodments' and one remains to help manage the ranch. During this adventure I have flown with United Airlines as a Flight Attendant for 48 years.

We also have another VRBO #388767 and recently sold our lovely Lavender Duck Inn. We continue to book the Lavender Duck which has moved to the ranch property.

If I have not been busy enough, we have a new business endevor. We are now producing custom teepees. You can see us sewing up our creations while staying at the ranch.

Why Judy Mulhair chose Vashon Island

I grew up in the Walla Walla area of Southeast Washington. It was a small rural town called Waitsburg. I am more comfortable in a such a setting and Vashon fits that image. I needed to be close to the airport since I work as a flight attendant. Vashon sets in a great location close to two large cities, it sets in the bottom of Puget Sound and is quiet and easy going yet convient to the large opportunities of the cities. It is like a secret garden, once the ferry leaves the dock, you feel a relief and calm come over you and your body just relaxes. I have flown all over the world, and there is no place like Vashon

What makes this house unique

We wanted a rural setting and when we looked for property on Vashon, we fell in love with this beautiful pastorial real estate. It is lined in 100 foot Douglas Fir trees with 6 acres cleared and 4 acres forested. The property boarders the Fisher Pond Reserve of 90 acres with is like having masive hiking trails in your backyard.

Pictures do not do it justice

  • 5 of 5

We were on the island for a wedding and the large open space made a great place for all of our families different ages to meet and have private conversations and still be a part of the group. The downstairs is very open which is really not shown by the pictures. By the pictures and description I was concerned about the house, but I was pleasantly surprised that it is better than the pictures show. It had a great back deck that we all enjoyed and my granddaughter enjoyed seeing the teepees in the background. Owner was very attentive to our needs. The house made our trip very enjoyable! If I returned to the island I would definitely rebook the house.

Great Listing for Large Groups!

  • 5 of 5

It was such a pleasure to stay in Judy's home. The house is in a great location - close to downtown and easily accessible from the ferry - and what a beautiful, relaxing, serene setting! Amenities were on point, nothing fancy but everything you could possibly need - sauna and cold plunge included! There were 11 people in our party and we were all comfortably accommodated.

Judy was super helpful and sweet. We LOVE Judy! And we cannot wait to come back.

Fabulous location for Wedding Reception and out of town guests

  • 5 of 5

We rented Judy Mulhairs lovely home on the AYH Ranch property for our families who traveled from Richmond, Virginia for our daughters wedding reception. The home was well appointed, very comfortable, and quiet. Those that stayed there said they slept great, had everything they needed, and were impressed by the owner, Judy.

We also rented the AYH Ranch barn and five teepees for the reception. The property is so lovely, one feels like they traveled hundreds of miles away, yet you are but 30 minutes from downtown Seattle. Judy has turned the barn into an event space and it was in everyway, perfect for our celebration. From the barn with a full kitchen, two bathrooms, three storage rooms (for all our decorations etc), lovely gas stone fireplace, to the serene bucolic fields surrounding.....sigh, so great! There are at least eight authentic teepees on site for use. Judy makes them! At least 7 of our guests stayed in them. Two of them were children and their are still talking about it.

We would all highly recommend this place! We thoroughly enjoyed Judy and hope to see her again!

best time to visit is Strawberry Festival the 3rd weekend in July. Otherwise Vashon is a bike friendly island also great for hiking and beachcombing. Try a night in an Indian Teepee at the ranch. The ranch has hosted many weddings and family reunions. We occasionally have a concert so check our web site for special events.
