About the property

Condo, 1 Bedroom + Convertible queen size bed, 1 Bath--Sleeps 2 adults & 2 kids

DISCOUNTS in JUNE 10% off & JULY 7.5% off —please see RATES section for details. Besides the nightly rates shown the ONLY other charge is the 13.42% Hawaiian Occupancy Tax, unless the booking is less than 14 nights, in which case cleaning costs apply (see below). We have no booking fee, no manager's fee, no deposit—EVER.

Pay ONLY the 13.42% Hawaiian Occupancy Tax—there are NO ADDITIONAL CHARGES whatsoever for stays of 14 nights and up. Cleaning costs apply to stays of less than 14 nights. The cleaning cost schedule:

Cleaning costs are

ZERO for all stays 14 nights and above:

$60 for stays of 7 nights and

$120 for all bookings of less than 7 nights.

VRBO software will not allow us to specify the number of guests as two adults and two children—so we are forced to put down that we host 4 people. But that is NOT FOUR ADULTS—we made a deal with our gorgeous condo: we would not overburden it with too many adults at once, and it would maintain its fresh, good looks and sweet disposition. And we—both parties to that agreement—have honored our promises, and our beautiful condo thanks us every time we return!

We NEVER require any damage deposit—we never charge for broken things or swim gear that does not make it back from the beach. Accidents happen, and you should be able to use our condo and our swim gear with full enjoyment—not always fearful of a damage charge. All we ask is to simply let us know so we can replace the item for our next guests.

Yes, our Condo UNIT ITSELF is actual OCEANFRONT (unlike 80% of the other so-called 'oceanfront' listings wherein they count the condo building as oceanfront, but their unit is located on the side of the building, affording ONLY A VIEW of the ocean). Make sure any other condos you are considering are IN FACT RIGHT ON THE OCEAN. Consumer group research showed OVER 80% of condos advertised as 'oceanfront' or the like, were NOT. The building was on the ocean, but the units advertised as “oceanfront” either faced the back side, or offered just a view of the ocean. Our unit IS RIGHT THERE, literally fronting the ocean—just 60 feet away.

Ocean WAVES crash just BELOW LANAI—60 Ft.—Located RIGHT ON Maalaea Bay, Maui, Hawaii, USA. Convenient Central Maui, 20 minutes from Kahului Airport, Kihei, or Lahaina.

Accommodation is a second-floor condominium that sleeps two adults and two children/teens (NOT for 4 adults). One bedroom with a queen-size bed, and the beautiful living room couch is a convertible, queen-sized sofa bed. One full, modern bath.

Quick Summary of Attributes:

You have come to the right spot to enjoy the VERY BEST OF MAUI. Our Maalaea Bay Home is very desirable:

* Oceanfront—unlike many others advertised—WE ARE RIGHT ON THE OCEAN—with the waves beneath the lanai.

* On a quiet, low-traffic, peaceful street (aptly named 'Hauoli'—meaning happy or delightful)

* Adjoins a 700-acre wetland that is a preserved National Wildlife Refuge; supports a diverse variety of migratory birds, featuring four miles of undeveloped, sandy, uncrowded beach

* DUCTED AIR conditioning to BOTH living room and bedroom with remote control for separate temperatures in each room—unlike most others advertised, which are merely 'window shaker' A/C units

* Largest pool in Maalaea—now passively heated via rooftop circulation of pool water

* Free WIRELESS BROADBAND INTERNET—work inside or outside

* Cable TV with dozens of channels

* Free long distance calls to the mainland—both USA & Canada

* Two telescopes and Bushnell binoculars for whale watching or stargazing

Detailed Background Information:

You will have the peaceful sound of the ocean crashing ashore just 60 feet from your fully-equipped, lighted lanai; a restful sound that resonates throughout the spacious living and dining areas. You will breathe in the gorgeous unobstructed daytime view of all of Maalaea Bay, Molokini crater crescent, Kihei, and Mount Haleakala. Stunning sunrises over Mount Haleakala (for those few willing to get up at that hour, it is worth it).

The evenings are just as special; enjoy the soft romance of warm breezes, the tiki-torch-lit shoreline, the sight of a CLEAR MOON-RISE over majestic Mount Haleakala, the light shimmering across the bay.

You will appreciate this one-of-a-kind location. Our Maalaea Bay Home is on the one and only residential street in Maalaea Harbor. Enjoy strolling down this quiet tree-lined sidewalk, listening to the birds, and inhaling the delicate fragrance of plumeria blossoms.

At the end of the road is Heycraft Park, just a short walk from our home. This is where you will either enjoy swimming in sparkling clear waters or start your walk along four miles of beautiful, uncrowded, sandy beach bordering the Kealia National Wildlife Refuge. The walk from our condo to the park is 1/4 mile walk; or you can drive since there is a small lot at the park.

The wildlife refuge was established in 1992 and is home to endangered native water birds, and hosts migratory ducks and shorebirds in fall, winter, and spring. This refuge provides 700 acres of some of the last remaining natural wetland habitat in the State of Hawaii. Kealia Pond is nearly 250 acres when full. The refuge is adjacent to Kealia Beach, which is a nesting ground for the endangered hawksbill turtle.

More than 31 species of birds, such as the endangered Hawaiian stilt and coot, and migrant waterfowl and shorebirds such as the Pacific golden plover use this refuge. You can approach the refuge from your walk along the ocean, or use the roadway to access an interpretive kiosk and boardwalk along the beach and refuge mudflats.

In summer months, the Refuge Pond shrinks, and many more shorebirds congregate here to take advantage of food exposed as the pond recedes. As the pond shrinks, fish are crowded into the remaining water, making them easy prey for black-crowned, night herons.

Another advantage of the CENTRAL LOCATION OF MAALAEA BAY is the proximity of so many attractions, all within easy walking distance. You can stroll to the nearby FIVE-STAR restaurants, the Maui Ocean Center and Aquarium, the Yacht Marina with tour boats for deep-sea fishing and whale watching tours, The Pacific Whale Foundation, and the Maalaea Harbor Village shops and restaurants.

Within the Maalaea Bay community of ten condominiums, Maalaea Kai, the building of Our Maalaea Home, stands out as an outstanding facility with well-groomed grounds. Barbecue is a delightful experience, with three grills and dining area just on the shoreline. Relax in the large heated pool, while enjoying the view of the crashing waves.

Back at our home, you will find everything spotlessly clean and completely furnished for all of your needs. Our quote letter to you will include a list of pantry items we provide—in addition to beach/swim gear you may need.

The AIR CONDITIONING is ducted from outside to BOTH the front and rear of our condominium, with INDIVIDUAL REMOTE CONTROLS for each room, affording desired, quiet comfort. FREE BROADBAND Internet plug-in cable hookup is provided. Compare to all other one bedroom units: most have a single 'window shaker' machine air conditioning only.

We have maintained our home as a SMOKE-FREE, pet-free environment for the enjoyment of our guests. Please do not smoke on the lanai inasmuch as the smoke travels to other units. There is no smoking on any of the grounds.

About Richard, for Gwen & Richard--Alberta

We live in Alberta, but with roots in Washington: Richard maintains a home there. We root for the Huskies, the Eskimos, the Seahawks, and the Oilers!

Gwen has her psychology practice in Alberta--and while she generates her CDs and articles and books in Alberta, MUCH of her inspiration is drawn from the dose of spiritual refreshing she enjoys during each visit to our peaceful paradise getaway. We trust that our condo--and your experiences here--will work their magic on you as well.

Richard, for Gwen & Richard--Alberta purchased this condo in 2004

Why Richard, for Gwen & Richard--Alberta chose Central Maui

We loved this peaceful, quiet setting--away from the tourists who crowd the better-known areas such as Lahaina, Kaanapali, Kihei, Wailea, and so forth. And yet, with this panoramic view and four miles of undeveloped beach nearby, we are peacefully isolated on a dead-end road just a short walk away to a park that adjoins a wildlife refuge that is your upland 'development' all the way to Sugar Beach. Very few on our beaches, other than the locals, who use the park on weekends and vacations.

Maybe best of all, our condo unit is TRULY OCEANFRONT--a strong arm could toss a rock from our lanai into the ocean. Who could ask for more?

By comparison, we recently took 29 minutes to drive through Kihei--and some parts of the day it is like a rolling parking lot to get in the line of cars headed for the ever-popular (and always over-populated) spots of Lahaina and Kaanapali.

When you see us on the map, you can see how easy it is to get out and about on the island. We are close to the main highway, yet tucked away on a dead-end road with no traffic.

Plus, Maalaea Kai has a greater percentage of owner-occupied units, which means fewer crowds doing the tourist thing. Our land is owned by our owners, unlike many other condos on our roadway (e.g. the two buildings on either side of us) where the condo unit 'owners' must pay rent each month to the land owner. Bottom-line of this is that we, as owners at Maalaea Kai, are much more likely to vote to put money into building & grounds improvements and maintenance. Hence, our building is in top shape, and likewise for our grounds.

What makes this condo unique

On our first visit to Maalaea Kai, we were renters. Nearing sunset, the condo manager lit all of the Tiki Torches along the ocean bulkhead. Waving palms, the torches, the ocean, and the colors of the sky. With the sun setting on the clouds and on Haleakala, and just the sounds of the ocean, it was PURE MAGIC for us! We know you will love it too.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Explanation of Negative Comment. We had a guest comment on a four things that were not right for her. Rather than expose her name and so forth, we chose to leave this comment as our explanation of the negative rating.

Here are the four items of her feedback, and each has been rectified (except for leaving food or condiments, inasmuch as our agent will not agree to do that).

#1. no bathmat

#2. living room curtain dirty

#3. mattress cover not clean

#4. no food or condiments were left for her and she had to go shopping right away since there was nothing to eat.

This is our e-mail response to our guest, the subject title of the e-mail is:

Maui Condo Feedback Appreciation

Dear Mary,

Thank you for your feedback about the condo. Of course we are saddened when our guests are not pleased, as we do our best to keep things in great shape.

There should have been a bathmat for the tub. We will direct our rental agent to replace it. We are sure Ginger would have taken care of this while you were there if she had been aware of it.

We will also have her send the curtains out for cleaning. We will direct her to have the cleaning staff launder the matress cover after each stay, which we had naturally assumed they would do.

We will further ask that she direct the cleaning staff to take note of these things and take care of them before they become problems for our guests.

As for food or the condiments....we do not supply a greeting meal upon arrival. But we also felt such things as olive oil or condiments should be available in the condo as a convenience for our guests. But our rental agent felt strongly that there should be nothing consumable left in the condo for safety reasons. We suppose someone could put something in the condiments that could cause illness. We know this is a remote possibility....We can't see someone vacationing in Maui ever doing such a thing, but we lost out on that argument.

We do understand your frustration here. It is a pain to have to buy things like salt and pepper for a short stay. We will look into providing small sealed containers or packets that are unopened so guests are not inconvenienced.

Again, We do apologize for these problems, and do appreciate your bringing them to our attention.

Simply wonderful

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at Richard's condo was absolutely wonderful; great weather, amenities and location makes for a memory filled vacation. Everything you would ever need for an unforgetable experience is found here, some things may be a little out dated (bathroom, kitchen) but they're fully functional, plus there are a number of other things (body boards, flippers, snorkling gear, mats and other stuff) to make your time here more enjoyable. The grounds are immaculate, the pool is beautiful and there are excellent barbecues conveniently located, if needed. I would highly recommend Richard's condo to anyone wishing to visit this tropical paradise. It was a fantastic experience we hope to duplicate very soon. Aloha!!

A cosy home away from home with awesome ocean views!

  • 5 of 5

Richard is very hospitable and answered all queries promptly. The apartment was very clean and well maintained. In addition, the condominium facilities (BBQ, pool, lawns, public sitting areas etc) are also well maintained. Staying in this apartment was an absolute pleasure!

Key features of the apartment that we liked are: (1) The well stocked kitchen which allows the flexibility to prepare our own meals and enjoy them on the 'lanai' overlooking the ocean and the Haleakala mountain (2) The beach towels and beach gear which enable an easy picnic at the beach (3) The view from the 'lanai' of the ocean and the gentle breeze - you could spend all day on the balcony and still yearn for more (4) The well stocked home library that allows you to relax while reading at home (5) The telescope and binoculars that assist in watching turtles and whales (6) a TV, radio, DVD player - you can have all the comforts and connection to worldly news and developments if you choose to

Richard was a great host and made us feel very comfortable. We loved his apartment and would love to return when we visit Maui in the future.

Maalaea is a hidden gem!

  • 5 of 5

Our recent family vacation to Maui was wonderful! 10 days brimming with activities and adventure for myself, my husband & our two kids. We are so happy to have spent our down time at this condo! We found the rates to be extremely reasonable for our vacationing budget and Gwen & Richard provided all the offerings and more of some of the more pricey condos on Maui ( I did plenty of research before committing to this condo). We saved a fortune by having a kitchen and not having to eat out all the time. The bbqs here are well looked after and cleaned spotless on a daily basis! The tiki torches were lit on the weekends and look so nice. The views around here will take your breath away and we enjoyed coffee on the lanai on a regular basis, scanning for whales (we didn't see any yet, Dec-March is best for whales). We didn't need to use A/C since the tradewinds kept everything nice and cool. It got REALLY windy while we were there, and apparently Maalaea is one of the windier areas of Maui! We didn't mind the wind, it kept the bugs away (except for one still night where I got eaten alive!!!) but if mosquitoes love you, They Love You. I will remember my bug spray next time! The kitchen had plenty of supplies to cook with and was well organized. The bedroom was perfect for my husband and I and the kids got the pullout couch which worked great for them. They heard the waves crashing and we heard the winds blowing! It was very tranquil! The parking stall is a quick walk to the stairs or elevator and we found it very convenient for hauling gear, luggage, groceries, etc... (We found the door lock a little tricky, maybe just because we're not used to it). The kids enjoyed using the boogie boards at the beach. We did use the pool once and it was nice and quiet. Everything was as Richard described in great detail in his emails. I really appreciated how quickly he responded to my inquiries and how patient he and Gwen were with me while I made up my mind. I'm so glad I trusted my instinct! Yes! This condo almost seemed too good to be true and for what it's may not be uber modern or super fancy, but we were looking for a cozy home away from home and we found it here! We were delighted with this condo and the owners' hospitality!!! Maalaea is a beautiful, quiet area and centrally located to EVERYTHING! Consider yourself lucky to stay here.

A rare opportunity on Maui to save some money!

Mahalo, Richard & Gwen. We hope to visit again one day.

Perfect vacation home in Paradise!

  • 5 of 5

Aloha! We recently stayed in this unit for 10 days and found it to be a great location as well as quiet. Within walking distance of a beach (0.4 mile pleasant stroll), where you can take long beach walks without the big resorts or seeing a lot of people. Did not even need bug spray here, the ocean winds provide relief from that. We only used the AC the first night, still being acclimated to mainland habits! We then cracked open the front door and opened the bedroom window. The wind blowing through the unit was phenomenal! The sound of the waves and view from the condo is outstanding and lovely. So comforting to wake up to that everyday and it was so hard to leave it in the end.

The condo was well stocked and well taken care of. Quite relaxing after a long day of sightseeing! : ) This condo was perfect for us, an active 50+ couple. Could be cramped with more people I would think, although when sleeping on the foldout couch in the living room, it was spa-like to listen to the waves as you fall asleep. We enjoyed using the telescope and binoculars, especially at night, to view the moon, stars and Kihei.

LOVED the scenic drives (both sides of the "peanut" are equally beautiful). If you want to do one of the luaus, book early. They fill up faster than we anticipated and so we missed going to one. Snorkel/beach equipment is included and they also sell snorkel equipment everywhere. We found Longs Drugs has some of the best prices. The "Maui Revealed" book was a great addition to our stay as it mentioned many worthwhile adventures and sights that would otherwise be missed. Hiking is superb on this island.

Gwen and Richard have thought of everything for their guests and are quite easy to talk to and get ahold of. Even though it is a second floor unit it would be easy for those with disabilities to get around as there is an elevator as well as steps to the second floor. We highly recommend this condo to anyone wanting to stay on Maui. It's a great value, quiet, centrally located and has gorgeous views of Maalaea Bay! Have fun, Mahalo!!

Don't look further - you have found true paradise

  • 5 of 5

After a very long flight, I was pleasantly surprised at pulling into the condo a short 15 minutes after picking up my luggage and rental car. Having a dedicated parking space right next to the entrance and elevator was another welcome surprise. The condo was perfect in so many ways...starting with the magnificent view of the ocean and the sound of nearby waves crashing what seemed like I could touch from my georgous lanai. I couldn't believe I saw a whale breaching in the bay right outside the condo. I was able to watch without the use of binoculars the owners offer their guests! The accommodations were spotless and clean with beautiful tropical motif furnishings. There was nothing the owners did not provide, which was another pleasant surprise. The bedroom was super quiet with fresh, crisp linens and fluffy pillows. I hadn't slept that well in ages. They even supplied enough towels, extra blankets, and any other linen needed. They even supplied laundry soap for the laundry room just steps down the hall from the unit! The kitchen also has everything you will need to cook during your stay. It was also very nice to be able to cook while watching the beautiful ocean right outside the living room. The owners also make sure their guests are not lacking in pool and beach supplies. Something not many condos offer are found here, first this unit has central air, although not necessairly needed because the ceiling fans circulate the soothing trade winds, but AC is nice to have. And second, the pool is will be surprised this is not common amongst condos in Maui. The Maalaea area is a perfect location for island touring, just a quick 25 minutes to Kaanapali Beach or 25-30 minutes to South Maui or quick trip to Mt. Haleakala.

I will end this with the most important feedback I can give. And that is the outstanding kindness and caring nature of the owners Richard and Gwen. The transaction and communication throughout was perfection and exceeded my expectations. Richard was available for questions before, during and after. They made me feel like family. I am going back in December and won't stay anywhere else.

Great location!

  • 4 of 5

We stayed at the condo in August/September 2014. We really loved the central location close to all activities yet away from the crowds. The size was perfect for 4 of us. The condo was clean. The view from the lanai was beautiful. The beach so close. The kids loved the swimming pool and they had it to themselves most of the time. We saw lots of turtles. Molokini Crates snorkel trip was a real highlight. Haalekala sunrise spectacular. Thank you so much Richard and Gwen for being friendly and helpful. We hope to be back some day for whale watching.
