About this property
Close to Everything Asheville! Small Deck, Wooded Trails to UNCA, Garden View
Clean, adorable space w/ small deck overlooking garden & fire pit, hardwood floors, WIFI, cable, original 1947 ceramic tub, tasteful art, Queen captain's bed with spacious drawers, Queen fold-out sofa, eat-in kitchenette w/ fridge, microwave, coffee maker, toaster, etc. Walk downtown, around the corner from pizza, breweries, Luella's BBQ, Homegrown, close to everything & UNCA trails, stylishly rustic, vintage feel, charm & character! CableTV now, with over 300 channels. Steep external stairs.
If you want a brand new hotel-like experience, this is not the apartment for you. Yet, if you are drawn to antiques, local art, natural fibers, and an eclectic, bohemian feel, this little hideaway might be a perfect fit. From a small second-floor private deck, the apartment opens into a living room full of windows, local arts and crafts, hardwood floors, and an artfully curated mixture of furniture including a carved wooden chair from Bali, a vintage Hollywood director's spotlight lamp, and a yellow antique coffee table that doubles as a chest. There's a fold-out sofa for an extra guest. (A feather mattress-topper that can be found in the bedroom closet will make it comfier.)
The bathroom is clean and bright, yet well-loved with its original 1927 ceramic tile floor and ceramic tub. There is a heater in the bathroom for those winter days where you want the whole bathroom to be warm when you get out of your bath.
A little hall filled with cabinets and art leads you to an eat-in breakfast nook (no oven because of City restrictions, yet there is a large toaster oven and 2 burner induction electric range). The bedroom has two closets, and a comfy Queen captain's bed with large drawers for clothes, and a memory foam mattress topper.
Entrance to the apartment is behind the house, up a flight of external stairs (steep, so this is not a good fit for people who have a hard time with stairs) to a deck overlooking a yard with a shared fire pit, flower and vegetable gardens. Close by are UNCA wooded trails leading to Botanical Gardens.
The apartment is about a mile from the outskirts of downtown, and convenient to everything including shops, breweries, ice cream, galleries, boutiques, restaurants, museums, grocery stores, natural foods stores, etc. A short walk from the apartment is a wonderful bakery/market/restaurant where you can get sumptuous food, coffee, and all kinds of culinary treats.
Off-street parking for one car, ( some people find the driveway to the parking to be a bit tricky; you may need to back out when leaving, or feel free to park on the street in front of the house. Usually there are plenty of spaces there as well.) Washer/Dryer in the unfinished basement with separate entrance shared with guests in the second apartment.
The apartment is fully furnished with tasteful furnishing and some local art, eat-in kitchenette. We offer TV with cable in this apartment on a large flat-screen TV in the living room with hundreds of channels. Feel free to (responsibly) enjoy the fire pit in the backyard. Neat, typical Asheville neighborhood with some historic houses, some new constructions, modern, some families, some students, some professionals. Very safe; we have never had any crime here to our knowledge. Our wonderful resident managers have been there for years and they are lovely, conscientious people whom we completely trust.
If you bring a pet, please pre-approve the pet before you book. If your pet is completely flea-free, housebroken, and non-destructive, we would be happy to consider him/her. There is a $20 per night, per pet fee which we cap at $100 for guests who stay beyond five days. We will only consider extraordinarily well-behaved pets. You will need to bring your pet with you when you leave the apartment, or if it needs to be known to be quiet when you are gone. If you have a pet, please put the provided sofa cover over the sofa to protect it from dirty paws and teething jaws.
Walls are thick plaster, so not a whole lot of sound carries, yet you may hear some sounds of others and footsteps, or smell cooking, etc. from the two other apartments. Just below the apartment is another guest apartment, so we ask that you please take off shoes when convenient. We live close by in the historic district Monford and are available if any issues arise. Also, our resident managers in the main part of the house can help you if need be. There are plenty of heaters, and air conditioner window units in warmer months.
We welcome constructive feedback so that we can make any improvements that will make our guests' stays any more enjoyable. We very much prefer this feedback directly, so that we can better understand and remedy any issue that may come up without unnecessarily alienating others who might benefit from staying. We try to be fully transparent about the apartment so that you can best make your booking decisions, well-informed. Most people who have stayed really love the apartment, yet there have been a few who might have been better off in a modern hotel.
We do the best we can to make the apartment a space that brings visitors comfort and joy. If there is something in the apartment that is not to your liking, feel free to let us know. If you happen to break or damage something while you are staying, please let us know immediately as opposed to pretending it didn't happen. We are reasonable people and know that things happen, but it's very helpful to know if and when they happen.
Keep in mind that this is not the Four Seasons Hotel. Though many people love it for all kinds of reasons, it is quirky and loved, and imperfect. But it's also a lot of fun and a great place to relax if you're the kind of person who gets inspired by art, literature, and vintage things.

Nice place to stay with spacious room, kitchen area, bathroom and living area. Nothing fancy, but very cozy and creative living area. I had no complaints and enjoyed my stay here.
This is a cute, whimsical little apartment with walking distance to the city center……1.2 miles on foot. Everything we needed was furnished , very clean fun little apartment .
Worked ok for our weekend purposes in mid-Oct. We had a family weekend gathering in town. Our family owns a home in Asheville (off Town Mtn road) but we needed some additional sleeping space) Pros: This rental unit was as described. Comfortable bed, clean, some charming vintage elements, convenient to other Asheville areas. Just a few notes to others considering a stay: as the property mgr states, the drive up/down the access road is tricky, Also there is no comfortable seating in the apartment (esp in the den/LR with its current couch), and lastly this is not a unit designed for cooking meals—ok for coffee, tea & maybe a quick microwave something or yogurt

This was a unique property in that it was an apartment in an old house nicely decorated with art work, antiques and fanciful wall colors and furnishings. Not a modern hotel feel, but an eclectic Asheville feel which is what I wanted. Nice neighborhood to walk and close by to Asheville downtown, groceries, restaurants, etc. The hosts are welcoming and accommodating. I had a bedroom, kitchen, living room and bathroom fully equipped with everything I needed for a month’s stay.
I loved staying in this comfortable apartment while I attended a music event downtown. It had everything I needed and was warm and welcoming. I can tell that the owners take pride in creating a cute and colorful space. As a single female, I felt completely safe, and I will return next time I want to be close to downtown.
Accurate description of the apt in the listing. This apt reminded me of house sitting a friend's home,
in that you have to figure out where things are and get used to its quirks . It is well supplied and comfortable, and within walking distance of downtown. I had an enjoyable stay.
We stayed for a long weekend and it was easy to get downtown (or anywhere, really). There’s a small lawn out back for dog relief that worked great. We will stay here again if it’s available when we’re back.
Walk to Home Grown for breakfast/brunch. It’s legit.
Attractive, cozy and clean apartment in a nice residential neighborhood. Lots of personal touches and convenient to restaurants. The only criticism that we had is that the water pressure in the shower could have been better. Overall, we were very happy with the apartment.
When they say "close to everything" they are not kidding. We were able to walk downtown in about 15 minutes and walked to a wonderful restaurant for dinner. The apartment is very comfortable and homey and the neighborhood was very nice. The stairs are a bit narrow and might be tough if you had a lot of luggage but we were fine.

basic accommodation
Property owner left shay soap in the shower, a nice touch. Location is good, too. However, the furniture is worn, and the kitchen faucet needs attention (hard to get it to work well). But, if you want an affordable place in Asheville, this works.

"Unique" and "bohemian" are terms we hear lot more often in our reviews than "basic," but everyone is entitled to their perspective. I welcome all constructive feedback and do whatever I can to make the apartment more satisfying and comfortable for guests. Thanks for the tip about the faucet; I'll get the drip to stop right away. If you want a white-washed hotel-like experience, this is not your place. On the other hand, if you prefer a slightly rustic, homey, vintage, clean, stylish feel, you might love our apartment. If you seek a luxurious suite with everything brand new, close to downtown though, you should expect to pay many hundreds of dollars per night. We welcome anyone who respects that we are a family doing our best to make the apartment as enjoyable as possible, and people who will let us know (hopefully in person) what we might do to improve it for future guests. We've also just added some fun, new vintage furniture, and a vintage butter churn...! So if that's the kind of thing you like, I'd bet you might enjoy the apartment. (My 7-year-old joked that he's afraid someone might write a review saying that the butter turn doesn't work properly...;) Please feel free to ask me any questions, if you have concerns about the content of this review; it is our first not great review in 2 years, so please keep that in mind when choosing your place to stay. However, we want to make sure it is right for you, and meets and hopefully exceeds your expectations, if possible. Sincerely, April Levin
Neat space - within walking distance for most (1-1.5 mi. max with hilly terrain) of grocery stores, shops & restaurants.
Steps up to the apartment are older but stable. Quiet neighborhood. Nice remodel of a vintage space. Comfy. Only con (and not much of one) is the kitchen utensils were not the best but got the job done. Property managers were very friendly.

Good value
Cute apartment within a $5 Uber drive to downtown. If it isn't steaming hot outside you could easily walk. The only TV in the place is super tiny (maybe 15"?) and doesn't have cable, but it does have DVD capabilities.

Glad you enjoyed the apartment, and thanks for the Uber info for future guests. If the 4 instead of 5 star review is based on the lack of cable, I think this is slightly unfair, as we are very clear in the listing description that there is no TV or cable. The DVD player is just a bonus. People who require TV and cable should look elsewhere for accommodations. However, we are happy to share our Netflix password with you during your stay if you bring a laptop, ipad or screen of your own. : )
Apartment was very clean and supplied with everything as advertised. The owners were kind and available for questions. We experienced issues with the tv and were very limited with channel choices. We didn’t remember when booking that there was a full flight of stairs to enter.
The location is perfect. As an older woman I found it difficult to carry luggage up and down the staircase.
My daughter did not. I would have liked a good reading lamp and more comfortable furniture in the living room. The bathroom was nice, and bedroom very serene. We especially liked seeing the artwork. Overall nicely decorated, sunny and bright inside.

I’m glad you enjoyed the location, decoration, artwork, etc. and I’m sorry that you had a hard time carrying your luggage up the stairs. We try to be completely forthcoming about the external stairs up to the deck and entrance in the listing, and so I will reiterate it here: this is not a good fit for anyone who has difficulty with stairs. We would much rather you stay in our ground floor apartment or somewhere else if this is an issue for you.

The property owner warns that this is not a big resort type of room; it is no Hilton. However, this little upstairs apartment was clean, beautifully decorated and felt welcoming and warm. The place itself is older, but that is the charm. It has character....AND all of the amenities. The shower was hot, bed soft and we enjoyed every moment of our stay.
We headed the warnings like taking our shoes off and scaling the steep steps. This was in no way off-putting. The parking situation was a bit tough as we navigated in and out of the driveway, but got the hang of it and still loved every minute.
We will definitely be back!!
This is a fine rental for a couple, but the front room isn't really suitable for sleeping. The super bright motion sensor floodlight outside the door is faulty and floods the front room (and wildlife and neighbors) with unwanted light. In the middle of the night, I eventually realized I could use a towel to unscrew the hot flood lights and get some sleep. The sofa bed is not the same as the one in the photo—it is a small, hard, modern sofa. Even with the provided feather mattress topper it was hard and uncomfortable.

Great location but property was not as nice as advertised
We love the location of the vrbo but when we arrived late in the eveni g the house was cold and there was very little toilet paper. Turning on the gas heater proved problematic so we went without heat in the kitchen. There was an electric heater in the bedroom which worked well.
The kitchen is not stocked well. There were no dish towels, paper towels, and the knobs on the cabinets were loose.
Also getting into and out of the driveway is tricky. You will need to be able to back out of a short but narrow driveway.
We ended up having to,buy toilet paper.
We would t stay here again.

I’m glad you enjoyed the location and want to comment on your specifics so that future guests will have more accurate information. We do provide paper towels, toilet paper, and dish towels; I wish that she had let me know if there was an issue with this if she couldn’t find them or needed more. I delivered more toilet paper to her when she asked. There is also extra in the basement where the washer dryer is located for which I provide a key. The gas heater in the kitchen works well and there are directions about lighting it right beside it, but for people who don’t wish to use a gas heater there are electric heaters in the closets. There is also an easy gas heater in the living room. Since my diabetic son was ill that day, perhaps my cleaning person did not leave the heater on, which I generally do on cold days, but given the flexible check in time I allow my guests, it’s hard to have the apartment at the perfect temp at all times for every preference. It does get nice and toasty if that’s what you want. The driveway can be tricky for some if you are not used to turning around in a small lot or backing down a short driveway. I think I make this all fairly clear in the description, so please read the description before booking. Also, I was not aware that some knobs were loose so I appreciate knowing this. I would much rather have guests let me know these things in person so I can fix them as I invite in my note on the door, instead of giving me a review like this that is bound to give people the wrong impression of the apartment. Thankfully, all of my other reviews reflect a spectacular experience.
This property was perfect for our girls weekend in Asheville! On top of the perfect distance from all our planned activities all the check-in and location instructions were easy to follow, the property manager was prompt and friendly, and the place was even cuter in person! We would definitely stay here again and recommend anyone stopping by for a visit should keep an eye out for this place.

About the host
Hosted by Brian Melchionni
The owners moved to Asheville about 17 years ago from San Francisco. Matt owns an advertising agency downtown and is their creative director. April is a writer and musician. We love Asheville and enjoy sharing it with visitors. Our tenant Brian manages the apartments and works as a landscape architect at a downtown firm. Let us know if you would like restaurant or activity tips!
Why they chose this property
We love historic homes and this one has a lot of charm and is quite close to downtown Asheville in a neat neighborhood. We no longer live in the property but are close by in Montford. We have a lovely resident manager Brian who is the resident host.
What makes this property unique
Some of the fun things about this house are that there are some original details like the original ceramic tub, hardwood floors, and bathroom tiles, as well as interesting windows, built-in ironing boards, and crown molding. The property is within walking distance to downtown and UNCA, yet some find it too far to walk. If you do decide to walk, it's best to take the side streets through neighborhoods instead of on the main drag Merrimon. Since it is an old house, please note that it is a bit quirky and rustic, but very clean.
