This self-contained cottage dates back to 1896. It was fully restored in 2002 but much of it is kept original but all the modern luxuries are present. On the upper level are the living room and kitchen and the lower level has two bedrooms and the bathroom with tub. The larger bedroom has a queen bed, the smaller one a bunk bed. The property is a true gem, the 14 secluded heritage acres have a bit of everything. There is the horse-field surrounded by the old growth forest and the old orchard, where the bees are happily humming along. You can go for a stroll in the forest or along the flower beds, with the view of the mountains in the back. Or if you just want to sit and relax then there's the sit-area with a rustic river rock fireplace, which is also a perfect place for a night under the stars. All of this is close to the river, ocean, parks, trails, wineries and many interesting things to see and do. The property was as expected and exactly what we were looking for.

  • 4 of 5

We spent 2 weeks at this location.

The listing description was accurate and there were no surprises.

The property was clean and well maintained.

Unfortunately, there was no direction provided as to where to dispose of the garbage.

We didn't request customer service nor was any offered.

We would recommend this property to friends and relatives if this was the type of venue for which they were looking.

We enjoyed the venues at Cowichan Bay, and Duncan Garage Cafe.

We were disappointed with the Dog House Restaurant unfortunately the quality food was very poor.

We were also disappointed with the Lavender Farm where we were not greeted and left to our own devices to find

the labyrinth. The lady at the counter was busy on her computer and ignored us.

Magical fairy tale lifestyle farm cottage

  • 5 of 5

The Magic of the Gem O' the Isle farm cottage is exactly a magical place on Vancouver island for those wishing to escape to a different lifestyle that is genuinely beautiful and rustic in its true essence.

Ben and Patty where very friendly host and treated my family and two friends like their own. I loved the fact that we could be free to roam and discover the magic hidden within the farm and throughout the forest and hiking trails so close to their property.

This is a special retreat for those individuals knowing that it's not catered to picky people with extreme high expectations of a five star resort or equivalent to a Ritz Carlton resort. Instead Ben and Patty have transplanted their lives with their children here and built and created their dreams with an authentic farm lifestyle that requires every day of work.

You will find real farm animals like chickens and cats and two very friendly dogs roaming around the farm. Behind the stables you will discover beautiful horses that seem to be attracted to their guest.

This cottage located only minutes from convenient stores, wineries, hiking trails, and so much more. Be sure to check out the Kinsol Trestle historical bridge about 25 min. from the farm. It's quite a spectacular tourist attraction.

It was a perfect getaway for our eight year old son and tween daughter. They enjoyed playing on the tree swings and chasing the chickens while exploring through the fairy tail forest trails all within minutes from the cottage.

Two nights was not enough for our family. But it was an experience we will always remember. We would definitely spend at least a week here at the farm cottage on our next vacation.

Thank you Ben and Patty for making us feel right at home.

it truly is a Gem

  • 5 of 5

Such a neat and beautiful place to stay, our host Patty and Ben including their children where inviting and always ready to talk with or without a coffee, and answer questions. Minutes to town, walking trails and river.

We loved our time there and strongly recommend this Gem in Cowichan Station

Really nice stay at this farm cottage, A true Gem

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the Gem cottage for 3 days and it was a great experience seeing all the farm animals , horses and chickens . We loved the forest trails to bright Angel park and the Koksilah river . Great hospitality from the hosts and their kids, The cabin was really cute and and cozy. The bedroom was nice and clean and we finally had some good nights rests after many days of travelling. Highly recommended.
