About the property

3 Bed 2 Bath Farm House with Au Natural Zen Garden. Onsite Massage Available.

At our farm cottage, once home to Penley Produce, you feel like time can stand still. This Great Depression Era farm house has been re-purposed to bring together lush green pastures, wide angle mountain views, and peaceful good living. The Penley family has owned this small farm and surrounding homes for many generations.

We are close to everything Asheville has to offer—Biltmore House, hiking, biking, shopping, tubing, running, the arts....the list is endless. Eclectic and funky West Asheville is just down the road offering a great collection of eateries, galleries and shops. Downtown Asheville is just minutes beyond that with a dazzling array of shops, restaurants, galleries and arts events, all infused with that unique Asheville laid back vibe. Just around the corner is the River Arts District where you can spend a day exploring one of the most active and accessible communities of working artists in the Southeast. If you get tired gallery hopping, you will find many great options for food and drink to rest a spell and rub shoulders with friendly locals who will be happy to tell you about the best local breweries.

GranLloyd’s House has been recently re-designed with eclectic country feel and Zen meditation in mind. Just renovated from top to bottom, GranLloyd’s House includes a huge kitchen with new appliances, granite countertops, and plenty of room for group dining.

The living room opens out to a rocking chair front deck that is perfect for your morning coffee and good book. The back deck is surrounded by a privacy fence with a grill and beautiful view of the pasture and Mt. Pisgah. A more complete description can be found below under Spa Retreat. The Master suite (Patsy/Sandra/Phyllis’ Room) comes with a queen size bed and a shower bathroom. The second Bedroom (Grannie Penley’s Room) a refurbished bathroom with old timey tub/shower, tile floors, and granite vanity. The third bedroom (Veronica’s Room) doubles as Massage Room with a Murphy Bed. Finally, there is a single bed sleep closet (Uncle Michael’s) room but it has no heat or air. The struggle was real.

Massage/yoga room (Veronica’s Room) has a professional massage table/towel heater/stone heater to be utilized by 'call-in' licensed therapist. Massage is available with advanced reservations in Yoga Room or outside in the private and peaceful Zen Garden.

About Michael Patton

Penley Produce is currently owned by Tony & Kathy Brown who is the grandson of Mr. Lloyd Adam Penley. However, the original farm was purchased at the turn of the century by the Penley's and divided amongst the family members. Lloyd & Laura Penley built the farm house in 1923. Over the years, Tony & Kathy have reassembled the almost 15 acres of original land and 8+ homes. Ultimately, the property will be turned to conservation land and be available for large weddings/events for over 250 guests.

Tony Brown, who was lived in the farm house for his first 3 years, is author of two little known books 'A Happy Guide to a Short Life' which is a response to Ms. Anna Quindlen's mulit-million selling 'A Short Guide to a Happy Life.' (2007) Mr. Brown also wrote a children's book entitled, 'Farmer Lloyd & Grannie's Big Farm in the Mountains' (1998).

Micheal Patton, Tony's Brother, is the Property Manager/Primary Contact for Penley Produce Spa Retreat & Gallery. He also grew up on the Penley Farm picking cukes, corn, beans, peppers, and squash. He is the Owner/President of Mountaineer Construction and is available to address any repairs or issues that might arise during your stay.

Phyllis Patton, Tony and Mike's Mom and the daughter of Lloyd & Laura Penley, is a professional real estate agent with Beverly Hanks & Associates. As a child, she grew up on the farm and was catch milking a cow by her future husband (Bud Patton) who had come calling. The rest is history ... as they say.

Michael Patton purchased this cottage in 1923

Why Michael Patton chose Smoky Mountains

Penley Produce was an active farm from the early 1900's until 2010 when Mr. Lloyd Penley died at 102 years of age. Mr. Penley and his brother ER raised chickens, fruits, and vegetables through the Great Depression and retiring from the Enka Plant in 1973. During the 1960s-70s, the Penley Clan grew to over 50 family members who all lived within FIVE (5) miles of the family farm. The entire family attended Francis Asbury United Methodist Church and attended school in Buncombe County. More recently in 2000s, through the leadership of the Community Foundation of Western North Carolina, Fields of Hope at Penley Produce grew and distributed several tons of potato to Mana Food Bank.

Over the years, family and friends have celebrated weddings, holidays, and birthdays at 'GranLloyd & Grannie Laura's'. Most notably, Grannie Laura's 90th birthday was an all day gala with hot air ballons, blue grass band, carnival tent, BBQ, horse rides, square dancing/clogging, bike/motorcycle riding, volleyball games, frisbee toss, 90 red roses and wonderfully decorated picnic tables, and local fruits/vegetables. It is from this context of family, history, and community service that Penley Produce Spa Retreat & Gallery was born.

What makes this cottage unique

Penley Produce is the perfect for visitors looking for open space, au natural privacy, yet still within 15 minutes of Downtown Asheville. Whether you are a mountain biker wanting immediate access to WNC's finest trails, or a craft beer enthusiast who might enjoy BOTH a frosty mug at a farm-setting sunset and another round at one of Asheville's many micro-breweries/bars/resturants. Some folks will come on the Penley farm and never leave while others will use it as a point of departure for a full weekend of outdoor activities ... which might just include shopping!

Felt at home and great location!

  • 5 of 5

The home was a perfect get away! Cute little house with many updates and very clean. Hot tub was perfect (and very clean!) to hop into every morning and night. Michael met us at the house upon arrival and went over everything. Great experience, you'll love this rental! If we are back in Asheville again, I would definitely book again!

Perfect

  • 5 of 5

The house was perfectly located for both exploring trails and heading into town for dinner and shopping. The host was super accommodating and communicated extremely well. The property was exceptionally clean (and I am a tough critic!). Beds were super comfy too.

Charming home, with magnificent views.

  • 5 of 5

We arrived after sunset, and quickly realized we were in for a treat. The rooms were all very comfortable, and we felt at home immediately. After getting settled, we headed out to the patio to unwind after the long drive, and enjoyed comfortable weather and the star gazing. The views of the mountains in the morning instantly validated the decision to stay at the cottage. Michael was extremely helpful with planning, and making sure we enjoyed our stay. We all had an amazing time, and will definitely be back!

  • 5 of 5

The house was great and had everything we needed! It was a short 15-20 min drive to downtown. We were able to Uber back and forth if we needed to. There were 8 of us and there was plenty of room for all of us!
