About Michael Patton
Penley Produce is currently owned by Tony & Kathy Brown who is the grandson of Mr. Lloyd Adam Penley. However, the original farm was purchased at the turn of the century by the Penley's and divided amongst the family members. Lloyd & Laura Penley built the farm house in 1923. Over the years, Tony & Kathy have reassembled the almost 15 acres of original land and 8+ homes. Ultimately, the property will be turned to conservation land and be available for large weddings/events for over 250 guests. Tony Brown, who was lived in the farm house for his first 3 years, is author of two little known books 'A Happy Guide to a Short Life' which is a response to Ms. Anna Quindlen's mulit-million selling 'A Short Guide to a Happy Life.' (2007) Mr. Brown also wrote a children's book entitled, 'Farmer Lloyd & Grannie's Big Farm in the Mountains' (1998). Micheal Patton, Tony's Brother, is the Property Manager/Primary Contact for Penley Produce Spa Retreat & Gallery. He also grew up on the Penley Farm picking cukes, corn, beans, peppers, and squash. He is the Owner/President of Mountaineer Construction and is available to address any repairs or issues that might arise during your stay. Phyllis Patton, Tony and Mike's Mom and the daughter of Lloyd & Laura Penley, is a professional real estate agent with Beverly Hanks & Associates. As a child, she grew up on the farm and was catch milking a cow by her future husband (Bud Patton) who had come calling. The rest is history ... as they say.
Michael Patton purchased this Cottage in 1923
Why Michael Patton chose Lower Hominy
Penley Produce was an active farm from the early 1900's until 2010 when Mr. Lloyd Penley died at 102 years of age. Mr. Penley and his brother ER raised chickens, fruits, and vegetables through the Great Depression and retiring from the Enka Plant in 1973. During the 1960s-70s, the Penley Clan grew to over 50 family members who all lived within FIVE (5) miles of the family farm. The entire family attended Francis Asbury United Methodist Church and attended school in Buncombe County. More recently in 2000s, through the leadership of the Community Foundation of Western North Carolina, Fields of Hope at Penley Produce grew and distributed several tons of potato to Mana Food Bank. Over the years, family and friends have celebrated weddings, holidays, and birthdays at 'GranLloyd & Grannie Laura's'. Most notably, Grannie Laura's 90th birthday was an all day gala with hot air ballons, blue grass band, carnival tent, BBQ, horse rides, square dancing/clogging, bike/motorcycle riding, volleyball games, frisbee toss, 90 red roses and wonderfully decorated picnic tables, and local fruits/vegetables. It is from this context of family, history, and community service that Penley Produce Spa Retreat & Gallery was born.

Views to die for! Best bachelorette trip!
We absolutely loved this house. It had the most amazing view from almost all the windows and full mountainscape sitting in the backyard. We abzolutely loved how cute and spacious the farmhouse was and the backyard was perfect for just hanging out. There is a nice little deck with lots of outdoor seating, beautiful landscaping, and an awesome large hot tub. There were 8 of us who stayed. 2 of us had to use his blow up mattress but it was a super nice double-decker kind with even a blow up headboard! The owner Michael was super awesome too, he showed us around the house and even drove us to and from downtown Asheville in his uber/lyft shuttle bus he has. I will definitely be returning to stay here in the future!
Beautiful cottage with a lot of history and Michael is helpful!
Michael stopped by when we first arrived to show us around the place and tell us a little bit about his history there. It was originally his grandmother’s home and you can tell it means a lot to him. The house itself is beautiful with plenty of room for our group of 6. The beds were all comfortable and the rooms were beautiful. It was close enough to get to downtown Asheville in about 15 min or a $25 Lyft. Michael also gave us some wonderful recommendations to try during our stay which was perfect as this was our first visit to Asheville. We had a wonderful time and would definitely return to Michael’s property!
Very nice for our family
Owner was very accommodating and responsive. Home had everything you might need and it was a great location. We would definitely stay again! Hot tub is a nice bonus.
Great Place to Stay
Michael's place is awesome. The zen garden and hot tub were amazing, there is plenty of space and the location relative to downtown yet still get the mountain feeling couldn't have been better for our group. Would definitely recommend.
The property was very clean, the beds were all comfortable, and the house had everything we needed.
The property manager was very nice and accommodating. We had everything we needed to feel at home. The drive was only 15-20 min to anything we had planned to do. Couldn't have asked for a better stay.
Very quaint, but great qualities. Perfect for a weekend in Asheville.
Clean, great location, and very well kept.
