About Lori

We have been going to St. George Island since 1994. It is the second home we designed and built on the island. We have traveled to beaches all over the world and find this one to be the the widest, greatest sand with absolutely no crowds. We hate staying in junky rental homes and it is my commitment to you that we have the absolute best in the house. You will never be short of anything in the kitchen and when it gets 'used' we throw and buy new. We like the east end because it has far less bugs, no vegetation on the beach and is within a mile of the state park.

Lori purchased this house in 2007

Why Lori chose St. George Island

Beaches are the very best! We are 15 minutes from Apalachicola with unique shops and great restaurants. The island has terrific restaurants, biking and a state park that looks like it has never been touched.

What makes this house unique

Our house has it all! 7 bedrooms. Each bedroom with its own bath and each with TV for the night owls or when you just must get away. Beachside pool and a hot tub

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a great time with 15 people at Solitude. We didn'ave have the best weather but we made the best out of it! We evern named a new drink after the house "It was like being at the Ritz" We loved the pool ad hottb and caughter several nice sized flish. The kitchen allowed us to cook many means. We have never experience such small crowds on the bgeach. We felt like the beach was ours. We would all come back in the future. Thank you.

Solitude is by far, without a doubt, the finest, best positioned home in St George Island. My first visit was when it was first available for rent in 2006. My family has never wanted to stay anywhere else. Our perfect beach house. I am blessed to be able to afford to stay in any house on the island. Suffice it to say I've chosen Solitude every year for the last eleven, and will continue to do so!

Our family had a wonderful week at this house! There are 16 of us, including the 8 grandchildren, and we could not have enjoyed it more! The house is great, the beach is really nice and private, and with the small grandchildren (6 are age five or under), the pool was a very popular place to spend much of the day!! This house is the perfect layout for privacy as well as group times. The kitchen seemed to have everything and we really enjoyed meal times because we could all eat together. A special thanks to Lori and her family for sharing such a wonderful vacation place.

Perfect for a Group

I cannot thank Lori enough for the experience we had at Solitude. Every person on the trip pulled me aside and asked when we would be back. Everything was well appointed and the Island itself along with Apalachicola is a gem. Thanks again for a beautiful place for us to celebrate in. Cheers!

We hosted our wedding here. I can't say enough how truly happy we are with this house, this island, this beach, this property owner (Lori) etc. This is it. We will be back a thousand times in the future. So so happy.

Nice House, One BIG problem with owner

  • 2 of 5

Working with Lori (owner) was great at first. House was very nice and would have been rated better except for: 2nd fridge didn't keep food cool, dishwashers didn't clean dishes, washer made clothes smell musty, dryer didn't dry well and ONE BIG ISSUE....When we booked our trip, I insisted that my husband purchase the "hurricane insurance" and thankfully we did because Hurricane Hermine came that week! We were evacuated off the island for 2 days (Wed & Thurs) and had to get a hotel 2 hours away. The rest of our family decided to go back home and not get hotels (didn't want to pay for hotel just to possibly come back for one day). When we contacted Lori about the insurance, she at first told us policy was with CSA so we called them. That company said they didn't even offer that type of insurance. So we called VRBO who directed us back to Lori. After much back and forth, we learned that Lori was supposed to purchase the policy but never did. She later told us she quit purchasing them. She at first offered to give us our insurance policy money back (Which was only a fraction of what she owed per the policy she should have purchased) and after countless back and forth emails she finally refunded us a PORTION of the amount we were due. She used every loophole and technicality to try to get out of paying us. She was impervious to reason. I just assumed that purchasing this policy protected us. So ASK for a copy of your policy, policy #, and company used if you "purchase" one. I found the whole situation to be very unprofessional and her to be quite insensitive of our situation. Lori, if you read this, I want you to know that your home is lovely and I had intended to rate you very highly. Our family looked forward to renting your house again but after all of this, we will not deal with you again. I am so very disappointed in the way this was handled and to be honest, had I known you would act like this, I would have rented from someone else from the beginning. We took care of your home. We did everything we could think of to protect your home and belongings before we evacuated. We spent most of the morning Wednesday storm-proofing. Then we spent all day Friday unpacking, cleaning inside and out and helping maintence crews locate and fix damages. We treated your property as if it were our own. I hate it had to end this way. We feel that others need to be warned about the "policy" issue and I think they need to know how you handled it. It's a character issue.

Owner's Response: We always try to provide our guest with the best possible experience. It is always unfortunate when a hurricane comes to the island and our guests have to evacuate. The hurricane insurance provides a refund for all nights that our guests are not in the house and the guest received that amount plus tax. The guest was a 14 day rental and was evacuated for 2 nights. We refunded the 2 nights off the island. We did not refund for the 8 following nights that they stayed in the house and anyone who purchases the policy would not receive a refund for nights that they occupy the house. The guest contacted their attorney and was advised that occupying the house does not allow them to receive a refund for nights when they slept in the house. They returned to the island at noon and enjoyed the house the rest of their rental period. All guests receive a link to the policy and are encouraged to know the policy. Unfortunately, not all guests read the policy or choose to understand it We have multiple repeat guests and this guests party booked for the 2017 season after check out so we believe the issue is the dispute over our unwillingness to refund for the nights they occupied the house. The insurance company verified with the guest that there is no money due and that has been an unacceptable outcome for them. We hate any dispute. We had a terrific relationship with this guest and heard of no complaints about the home. We spoke almost daily during the hurricane and this is the first mention of any issues in the house. (I was there the week before the party checked in and fridge, W/D and dishwashers were working at that time. We have onsite maintenance that is VERY responsive if any issues exist). We opened our home in 2006 and 8 of our summer weeks are occupied by guests that have stayed with us since 2006 which I hope speaks to our commitment to our guests and the experience we supply. This is the second hurricane on the island since we built the home. The other time this happened we refunded all nights they did not occupy the house as well which is the hurricane policy. I will always maintain that it is an unreasonable expectation that we refund money for nights when the home is occupied. I am very sorry that this guest is unhappy and that we were unable to satisfactorily reach an outcome that was reasonable for us and for them.
