About Victoria Papajohn, family representative

In 1948, our family BUILT THIS HOUSE and four generations still love to walk on the beach together - taking advantage of the amazing natural beauty. It is common to see dolphins arcing through the water, chasing the mullet towards the shore as they fish. Shell collecting and sand bars tempt us daily! Our lives are busy, and time seems to stand still at rustic Alligator Point... Year-round, we find Jo-Vel the most fun - and the most restorative place - that we can imagine. We now live all over the world, but Jo-vel anchors us!

Victoria Papajohn, family representative purchased this house in 1948

Why Victoria Papajohn, family representative chose Alligator Point

Jo -Vel Cottage is named after John and Velva Powell – the first generation to dream. They are gone, but 3 generations continue their dream of family at Jo-Vel. The five bedroom cottage was built in 1948, before there was electricity or a paved road (imagine driving on oyster shells). Drinking water was hauled in 5 gallon jugs. The second family generation now owns Jo-Vel, and is starting to pass the wand of protection on to the next. Family members have come from Japan, India, Guam, Spain, Egypt, Canada, England and all across the United States for reunions. We try to keep it up, and upgrade it well, without losing some of its original 'cottage' charm. Seining for shrimp and fish, and dropping in the crab traps have always been parts of our routines at Jo-Vel. You will find some historic maps, and family pictures around the house to help you feel right at home!

What makes this house unique

Though sleeping in is one of the great joys of any vacation, make sure you set your alarm at least one morning at Jo-Vel and take advantage of the front porch deck with a cup of hot coffee or tea as the world around you awakens. Birds, dolphins, gulls, pelicans and heron are regularly seen all around the house and along the beach shoreline. Though their nests are to be protected, and NEVER disturbed in any way, we have been blessed with watching sea turtles lay their eggs in nests out front, and even witnessed the release of the many little hatchlings...

Fishing is truly fantastic, and our Alligator Habor is unique. Wikipedia brags of its renown for its clam harvesting: ' Because there is little freshwater flowing into the harbor, salinity levels are almost the same as the Gulf of Mexico. The salinity levels allow for the successful clam harvesting industry within the harbor. The bay also contains shallow oyster bars, that contain good fishing areas.' Our waters are rich, and you will enjoy casting a line here! Boat launches are nearby along Alligator Point Dr.

Perfect location on the gulf with absolutely nothing to distract you from enjoying time together!

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed a full week at the house. The gulf is only a few steps from the back door. Wonderful deck with Adirondack chairs to relax in while enjoying the breeze and watching the water. We caught fish right from the beach and cooked them the same night in the well stocked kitchen. Plenty of sand toys for the kids to use and a nice charcoal grill ready for cookouts. The house is an older home but has lots of room to spread out in and also common areas large enough for everyone to be together. The owners were very helpful with questions and quick to respond. Bring lots of groceries as the nearest store is at least twenty minutes. Don’t forget to save room for a meal Thursday through Saturday at the Tiki Bar on the island and grab some fresh seafood on the way through the small community of Panacea to cook at the house. We saw dolphins most every day and even watched them chase fish up onto the beach one morning. A perfect week!

Roomy and unusual dolphin dream

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our stay. A very laid back area with more dolphins than I've ever seen before, all very active. The closest store or restaurant is a 40 minute round trip, so bring food. This house has plenty of room for a large family, though some of the beds aren't really usable. The downstairs twin is a torture device, and one of the bedrooms is a walkthrough, which could be used in a pinch, but we opted not to. The futon on the upstairs sleeping porch looked the worse for wear. But even so, we had more than enough beds for our family of 9 (one a baby in our pack n play). There are lots of steps and the place seems tough to navigate the first day. One of the oven burners didn't work, but there are two ovens (one upstairs). This was useful for our Thanksgiving meal. We spent most of our time on the porch, deck, or beach. But beware the biting flies in late afternoon. We saw people fishing and shrimping, even some caught crabs for bait. We would come again.

Owner's Response: We are so glad you enjoyed your stay and deeply appreciate your feedback! I try to detail on the webpage clearly that the House is one of the Point's originals, and has been added to so it's actually quite a -MAZE-ing. 🤗🤗🤗 I also only accept bookings that the REAL bedrooms and beds can accommodate – the cot downstairs is just a napping or quiet time space (we do not count it as a bedroom nor a bed & we don't count any of the futons, either-- but all have had new pads within the last two years). Our family stays there with more than 17 of us comfortably, but obviously to prevent too much wear and tear , we cap stays for visitors for just the true amount of sleeping spaces and bedrooms at 10 to 12 max. We'd love to have you back and appreciate how carefully you enjoyed the property and left it clean and cozy!!!! You were rated a five-star guest 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 P. S. – We hear our screen porch upstairs and deck out front towards the beach are the best and largest on the Point... glad you enjoyed

Older house but comfortable and well equipped

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at Jo-Vel house! It seems like every time you turn a corner you find another bedroom or futon, so there's plenty of sleeping space. We had 10 people with several beds left over. The beds were comfortable and the linens provided were soft and cozy. Towels were fluffy, not skimpy. We cooked in most nights and every utensil we needed was already in the kitchen.

The layout is ...interesting. There was plenty of space for family dinners, but we could spread out so that the young couple wasn't bothered by the teen girls, who were avoiding the adolescent boys.

It is an older house, obviously loved through a generation or two. As long as that's what you're expecting, it's a quirky and charming place to spend a vacation. Victoria is fantastically responsive. I absolutely recommend it and we'd love to go back.

Owner's Response: You are so kind and honest in your review – in fact, our Beachhouse was the second one built on Alligator Point and has actually welcomed & been loved by fiour generations of our family! ❤️ We do try to keep it clean and in as good a shape as possible but really appreciate it when someone understands that so much wonderful space right on the Gulf does have a great value even if a little worn… We strive to treat our guests like family, too, and I appreciate that you were also a joy to HOST. Please come back and stay with us anytime

Fabulous Family Get Away

  • 5 of 5

This was a wonderful time of unity for our family. Victoria went out of her way to solve trivial issues for us. She genuinely cares for their family home and those staying there. As mentioned by others, the home is not fancy. We much prefer functional over fancy and this house provides that. Unlike other places we have stayed that sleep 12, but live about 4-6, this house provides ample space for 12 people to live and play.

The 3 refrigerators were most helpful in allowing us to go to Walmart and stock up and not have to run back out every few days. The laundry room was very spacious and allowed plenty of room to dump wet things and sort and fold clean things. The kitchens had plenty of pots, pans, knives, and other helpful things to make meals easy.

We enjoyed a wide variety of wildlife on the Point. There were many turtle nests active while we were there. One hatched out the night we arrived. We often ran in to "the turtle guys" who kept tabs on the nests and gave an excellent education to us about turtles. We also enjoyed dolphins, puffer fish, rays, crabs, sand dollars, sea urchins... Maybe it was just luck, but we had no biting flies, almost no jellyfish anywhere, and no typical bulbous seaweed that gets wrapped around you. The seaweed on the Point is almost more of a sea grass, and it was easy to avoid.

The beach itself is quite shallow and tame, meaning you can walk straight out into the water for a good way before you were up to your shoulders. This was great for the littlest ones. They were not intimidated to go in the water. The older ones would have enjoyed larger waves, but they still enjoyed swimming and extensive castle building.

A short drive away is Wakula Springs. This was nearby, dirt cheap, and well worth the effort to swim in the cold fresh water springs. We even saw a manatee.

If you are looking to be entertained, go out to eat every night, shop til you drop... go to PCB, Destin, or the like. If you want peace and quiet and family togetherness, come to the Point. We hope to return many times.

Charming beach cottage

  • 5 of 5

The house was exactly what we expected after reading the owner's description and reviews. It was best described by another guest of being a maze, there seemed to be three ways to get anywhere in the house.

We had a group of adults and young kids (1-5 years) and the house had plenty of space for everyone. The yard between the house and the beach was great place for the kids to play in the late afternoon, while the adults hung out on the deck. The two kitchens and three refrigerators came in handy. It was nice to rent a ground level house right on the gulf.

It is an old house, but was clean and everything worked as it should. We had a great week!

Owner's Response: Thrills us that you enjoyed the house and found that we represented it fairly and well! Yes, the house is a wonderful "maze" extension of rooms – with so much room for large groups like our own family!!! This house has been in our family since it was built right after WWII and as our family grew, so did Jovel Beach house. We work hard to maintain it, and we have a wonderful family with whom we partner & work to keep it perfect for our guests --- for decades they have kept it and cleaned it as if it was also their own. Please come back and stay with us again soon!!! You are most most welcome 🐚🐚🐚

Great time with the family

  • 5 of 5

This was a great experience for our first trip back to Alligator Point in more than 20 years. This house was perfect for our large family (8 adults and 1 toddler).

Plenty of sleeping space and beds, great places to hang out when it rained and right on the beach.

The outdoor deck in the back was awesome to watch the sunset.

We totally enjoyed our time at JoVel

We try to keep it clean clean clean & in shipshape and we are so happy when other families love our old lady like we do ! Please come again soon
