We retired from our careers in the San Francisco bay area and moved to our condo in Maui with a plan to stay for two years and then return to the California foothills.
Rotating between Maui and our motor home in California allowed our regular renters to continue to use our condo and gave us an opportunity to visit the U.S, Canada, and Alaska. We have since located in the Sierra foothills where we tend to our orchard trees, Zinfandel grapevines, vegetable and rose garden. At the end of the growing season we are back to Maui for our sunset fix.
Doug Brenton purchased this condo in 1999
Having lived in California all of our lives, we’ve had easy and inexpensive access to Hawaii. We have traveled to all of the Hawaiian Islands since 1968, and found the West Maui area to be the best sunset location with the islands of Lanai and Molokai bracketing the sunset.
We were thrilled to find our fifth floor Hololani oceanfront condo with the view over the top of the palm trees. There is no place that we have traveled in the world that compares with the area’s beauty and it is easy and inexpensive access.
During whale season (November to May), we can’t go more than a few minutes without seeing whales from of our oceanfront Lanai. The other months of the year we are always entertained with the barge and cruise ship traffic, and the kite-boards and wind surfers flying over the waves. We recommend that our guests travel with binoculars because there is always something to see from our oceanfront lanai.
Our condo is located near good restaurants, world class golf courses, shopping, hiking, all kinds of water sports and spectacular views from all around the island. The trip to Hana and up to Haleakala are a must. Our best day in Maui is sitting on the lanai reading a good book and watching the sparkling waves as the sun moves across the sky. With any luck we’ll see spinning dolphins, monk seals, huge sea turtles or flying fish frolicking in the Pacific.
A few women friends, relatives, and I rented this condo to celebrate my reaching the half century mark. The location is everything. Beautiful sunsets with blazing tiki torches in the foreground, grilled fresh fish, and IZ on the CD player all made for nearly perfect evenings. The lullaby of the ocean as you drift off to sleep was the best part. The condo is very well equipped and tastefully decorated. Doug and Linda are a pleasure to rent from. This is a great value.
We had a great time at Doug & Linda Brenton's condo. It was extremely hot but Doug had provided fan that helped. The condo was very well equipped for my family of 4. Thanks again for all the brochures and information provided!
Our stay at this beautiful beachfront condo could not have been any better. The condo was immaculate when we arrived, with a breathtaking view of the ocean. The well stocked kitchen satisfied our every need. The owner, Doug, provided a lovely package of information about all the best restaurants, deals and activities in the local area and around the island. It was so helpful to have this information for review in preparing for our trip. Doug was great to work with, accessible, and super helpful as we planned our trip. Our favorite thing he recommended was Warren and Annabell's Magic Show. Fun comedy, great setting, and completely different than any show we had ever seen!
We look forward to our next visit, and thank you, Doug, for all the special perks and info you provided. We loved it and plan to return to your beautiful Maui condo every year, as long as we are able. Mahalo!
My sister and some friends stayed here and had a wonderful time. Decided this would be a great birthday present for my sisters 65th. Most of the group had never been to Maui, so staying in Hololani was a great choice. The location of condo is super-right on beach, complex only has 64 units, 32 in each bldg.-very quaint and quiet. Views from balcony are super-Lanai to left and Molokai to the right. Fully furnished and kitchen fully equipped. Need to keep doors & windows open to get nice trade-wind breeze. Nice walking along the beach or just swimming in pool. Close to local shopping areas, easy to get around, either by walking to Kahana shopping center, which has a McDonald's, local coffee shop, pubs, etc. I'd recommend getting a car and drive around the island. recommend taking a Hana tour and let the professionals do the driving. Great location. Very nice vacation condo, highly recommend.
My wife and I and another couple rented this Hololani Condo from Doug.
It is directly on the beach. The pictures displayed on VRBO are the actual views you will have.
The condo is well equipped and nicely decorated. One bedroom is on the ocean side, one is on the street side.
We kept the doors and windows open at all times and a nice breeze was always blowing through.
The surf in front of the condo was always filled with surfers and paddleboarders. The beach is extra soft due to the large, coarse grains of sand----not at all like the fine sand I am accustomed to in Florida---but that wasn't a negative, just different.
We stayed for a week and explored the entire island. We stayed busy, snorkelling at Kapalua, Honolua and other bays, all within minutes of the condo. We took a boat to Molokini, but honestly, even though it was nice, just looking at the tropical fish at Honolua Bay was better. We saw and swam near a turtle at Kapalua for about 10 minutes.....he wasn't afraid, but we kept our distance anyway.
This condo is located in an area with ample stores and activity, but not so much activity that I would deem it to be too touristy. You can enjoy yourself on your own beach area if you like---it doesn't appear to be visited by outsiders.
The Old Lahaina Luau was booked......they recommended we visit the Feast at LeLe, which we did. The show and food was great....well worth the $125 per person.
We got up early one morning for the sunrise at Haleakala followed by a bike ride down---at our own pace. The condo is about an hour and fifteen minutes away from where you meet the biking company so we had to get up early to meet them. I recommend you do this on your first day there while you are still on east coast time.....it will make it easier for you! Highly recommended.
We had a rental car and drove all over Maui, all along the coast line. I forget the name of the highway, but the coastal highway around the northwest corner is pretty nice. Nice cliff drop views, several places where the road goes down to one lane. To me, this was prettier than the Hana Highway, but that's just my two cents. The Pilani Highway, which is the southern part of the island, is pretty remote too and equally beautiful.
The island is full of sandy beaches. Lots of activities. Used boogieboards at "slaughterhouse", 10 min. from condo.
Owner was awesome to work with--great communicator. Would rent from again & highly recommend.
What a view! From the moment we opened the door, we were swept away by the proximity to the water, and the views of Lanai and Molokai. We ran from room to room to explore, and were never disappointed. The master bedroom, with its views of the water was phenomenal, and our daughter very much appreciated her own room with her ensuite bathroom.
The kitchen was extremely well stocked, with a wide variety of spices in the cupboard. There wasn't anything that we looked for that we couldn't easily find. The washer / dryer was a bonus, as this allowed us to pare down the amount of clothing we would normally bring for an extended stay. Doug's assistance was invaluable leading up to the rental period. He even sent us a number of brochures for local activities prior to our leaving for Maui so we could maximize our time spent on the island. There's a selection of stores within walking distance to secure the essentials, so if you don't want to travel too far, you really don't have to venture out by car unless you feel the need to explore. As other reviewers have mentioned, the unit is well stocked. We very much appreciated the beach gear that was included... beach towels, beach chairs, noodles and various aquatic equipment.
On a technical note, the owner has recently installed a lockset on the front door that does away with keys. We arrived, went up the elevator and were in the unit in less than two minutes from locking the car. No need to check in with an office, or worry about taking keys with you to the pool, beach or excursion. Very convenient.
During the day, we could see the whales breaching off the coast and the beautiful sunsets from the lanai, and a double rainbow one day that arched from Lanai to Molokai. Almost as spectacular were the stars on the clear nights. I would not hesitate to recommend this condo to friends or family, and only hope we get the chance to venture to Maui again soon, as I know where I want home base to be.
Our family (2 adults & kids-18 & 14) spent 10 days on Maui and at this Condo, and LOVED IT! Doug & Linda were very accommodating & hospitable answering all of our questions, providing brochures, restaurants & activities to consider while on Maui. The condo was comfortable and stocked with extra pillows, snorkel gear, and towels for the beach! The grounds were constantly taken care of as well as the BBQ and pool area, which were cleaned on a daily basis. The snorkeling just outside the condo was amazing, with an abundance of marine life: fish, coral, and an occasional sea turtle! The condo is "beach front" and with their 180 degree view from their lanai, made our meals spectacular including the sunrise/sunsets, and frequent visits from the sea turtles on the beach in front of the condo. The only draw back (NOT the fault of the owners!) was navigating to the beach across the staircase, which was challenging at times. However, the condo itself, and all its updates & amenities, made this issue just a nuisance to us. The condo is close enough to the hustle and bustle of Kaanapali & Lahaina, but we were looking for peace & quiet, and it was EXACTLY what we received. For our family, we wouldn't hesitate to stay here again- truly a memorable & positive experience- from booking, staying, and creating such wonderful memories. Thank-you Doug & Linda so much for opening your home to us; we had an AWESOME and memorable vacation, and absolutely loved your condo!
