Aloha and welcome to Open Palms Plantation!
In Hawaii, our greeting to friends is, "Aloha! E komo mai"; "Hello! Come in!" So, to all who want to know the natural, quiet beauty of Hawaii, I say: "Welcome! Come in, relax, and enjoy my little gem in paradise”.
My kids have grown up and moved on into the world allowing me to open my home to those who are seeking a more pristine part in Hawaii. The same dedication and love of the land that drove me to build Open Palms is still with me, and when you visit, you’ll see me on my mower, or in the flower gardens with my weeder, or trimming the lush foliage that borders our property. There are horses in our paddock that kids can pet and feed and barbeque grills stand ready for your outdoor parties.
Situated in the foothills of the Koolau Mountain range – the only mountain range of its kind in all of Hawaii – we are afforded a spectacular view of the sheer, corrugated gorges that accentuate the range. You can’t believe how inspiring it is, following a rain, to see these gorges serving as conduits for magnificent waterfalls. A flock of white doves live in the trees on the property and are tame enough to hand feed, something the kids just love. We also have a gorgeous peacock in the neighborhood who has made it his practice to come visiting every afternoon for his supper.
My determination is to continue sharing this beauty with people from around the globe who will feel the same appreciation of Open Palms that I have. I am humbled that so many guests have taken the time to send me cards and letters – even photos of their families – with expressions of gratitude and appreciation. Also, many return year after year, and have sent their friends and family to share in the same happiness. It is my hope that we meet, and through that meeting we also become true friends.
So… Aloha, welcome, come in, and relax. A place where you can have no worries, you’re at Open Palms Plantation.
Kitty Nichols purchased this house in 1985
Like any polished jewel, Open Palms Plantation began as a raw, rugged part of nature, overgrown yes, but in a spectacular setting. There was beauty hidden in that wilderness and I was determined to create what I envisioned as a lovely home in harmony with its surroundings. Achieving a vision that had me spellbound didn’t come easy, taking years of hard work that I and my family actually performed with our own hands...and aching backs. And the result is a breathtaking two and a half acres of unpretentious, stunning contentment!
Bonfires at twilight emphasize the romanticism that is Hawaii, giving us pause, to reflect on how fortunate we are. Open Palms Plantation is unique in that we are insulated from the noise and commotion of towns. There is a serenity and calmness enveloping us and yet we’re only minutes from Kailua with it’s shopping malls, restaurants and food courts, and entertainment venues. And the beaches from Kailua to Lanikai to Waimanalo are among the finest-rated beaches in the world! Sail, surf, snorkel, or simply stretch out on the white sands and stop the world for awhile (don’t forget the sunscreen). Because there are so many things to see and enjoy, I provide each guest with maps and lists of places of interest, making it easier for planning their days’ outings. When they return I love hearing the joy and amazement in their voices as they tell me of their adventures.
We spent long, guiet moments of joy, bliss, and eternal union on this, our honeymoon. And although we ran amuck, as tourist do, the most wonderful moments were those of quiet closeness, face to face in conversation and knowing each others heart. This place allowed those quiet moments and was the place of occurance of our greatest oneness.
And in this the greatest blessing and accomplishment for our union and our honeymoon. In this, our honeymoon, has come to fruition and found it's greatest possible success. And in this we find supreme gratitude.
This is the place to stay while vacationing on Oahu, don't leave home without a reservation at Open Palms! Comfortable, warm, beautiful and secluded. Everything you might need while you are here is provided and if something is missing, Kitty will make sure you are taken care of. Everything is as advertised and our next visit will be booked here. Beyond expectations!
Open Palms Plantation was the peaceful paradise of a stay that we needed. Kitty was wonderful, the property immaculate and tidy. The location, a few minutes from several fantastic beaches is away from the tourist grind of Honolulu and Waikiki Beach, providing what I thought was a much more authentic island experience. My first ten days on the island were spent at the luxury resort of Ko Olina, where I was booked through my company, while there on business. Moving over to Open Palms Plantation to spend a week with my wife who flew out for the last week was a far more rewarding experience in every way! Ko Olina was nice, to be sure, but at Open Palms, we felt much more at home and comfortable than at the large resort.
There is nothing wrong to say with this place. We had a great time, the host was very friendly with us. The place is beautiful, secluded and safe. If you plan on renting a car and getting away from touristy Waikiki, this is the place to stay at.
We had wonderful stay at Open Palms Plantation. Our host Kitty was very welcoming and made sure our stay was amazing. House is comfortable and equipped with everything you might need. The entire property has been beautifully maintained and offers a nice retreat for people that want to escape hustle and bustle of Honolulu and staying at any hotel. I don't think we'd ever want to stay at another property at Oahu. We'll be back for sure!
Kitty and Hunter (Golden Retriever) were simply the best amazing hosts. This place is truly amazing. The plantation house itself and the surrounding landscape are quite unique. Kitty really made our trip to Hawaii something very special. She was always available and resourceful to help us navigate and discover the island...pretty much she knows everything. It is quite evident that she puts all of her energy and love in making this place very special. Location is great as it provides you with more of an inland type of experience, more immersed in the mountain landscape as opposed to the most expected beach type of experience. Highly recommended!!
We could not have ask for a better choice of where to stay. We did our running around during the day especially with our son getting married. I loved having my morning coffee and my evening nightcap , and anytime in between, just looking at the mountain or that beautiful tree overlooking the pastures. It was so peaceful. Kitty was just great. I think of her often and envy what she has made of her slice of paradise.
Tucked away at the base of the Ko'olau Mountains, you are located in one of the most pristine and peaceful environments on the island, and yet, only a two minute drive to Waimanalo Beach, the #1 rated beach in the US for 2015. Downtown area and Waikiki are located just 25 minute drive away if you feel the desire to have a night out on the town. Additionally, you can spend a day on the historic North Shore watching the surf and enjoy the stunning 45 minute coastal drive around the island.
