About this property
Primrose Seaside Cottage Above Shoreline With Gorgeous Views
McCollum Seaside Cottages are two quaint, 100-year-old, one bedroom, self-catering cottages situated on Moosabec Reach in a small, Maine fishing village. Rustic charm mixes with modern conveniences and gorgeous views to give visitors a comfortable retreat from the hectic world. Rent individually or together.
The Primrose Cottage is a rustic one bedroom oceanfront bungalow situated on a bluff above the shoreline of Moosebec Reach. It has a separate bedroom from the living area. Built in the early 1900's in the Craftsman style. Modern plumbing and filtered water added later. Equipped with wi-fi and situated on the bluff up from the shore. Easy walk to the local library, historic society and marina. Easy drive to many points of interest including Bar Harbor, Acadia, Schoodic Point, Quoddy Head State Park and Campobello. Local hiking on Great Wass Island and Bar Island are within a ten minute drive.
The cottage is a perfect spot to relax and take in the views or use as a launching point for Maine adventures. Jonesport is "real Maine." This is NOT Bar Harbor. No quaint restaurants and shops. Just places to hike, explore, and relax.
Moosabec Reach is a working lobster boat harbor. The shore/beach is perfect for hunting for sea glass, discovering things that wash ashore and watching for seals and eagles, not for swimming or playing in the sand. Water is very cold. Tides are about 15 feet, so shore looks very different between high and low tides.
The property is completely non-smoking, both inside and outside the cottage.
Please note that one must walk through uneven grass from the parking area and go up 3-4 steps to enter the cottage. It is not accessible to people with difficulty walking.
Our prices include all fees. No hidden fees.

I would most definitely recommend taking a tour of the Downeast Institute on Beals Island. You can check, but at the time of this writing, tours are TH-SA 10am-2pm. Driving around Beals Island is great as well, and there are several nice hikes.
What a nifty, quiet, cozy cabin. Built back in the day. Had everything needed in the kitchen and bath. Awesome view of the harbor. Right in town close to the general store. Relaxing and peaceful, small but comfortable. Gas fireplace heater was nice. If a slightly rustic old school cabin is your desire then this is it. Could easily stay a while if you like to explore. Would definitely go back.
Washington County is one of my favorite places in the western world. I was looking for a place where I could relax and reset. Primrose Cottage was just the place! The cottage is well equipped and comfortable, and food and supplies are available nearby. I visited Wass Island Preserve and took a glorious hike around the perimeter - pure joy! Challenging at times, and entirely worth the effort. All in all a lovely getaway!

Thanks, Max! So glad you enjoyed your visit. You are definitely welcome back next year : ) Heather
The cabin was spotless. We like the idea of the bed not being made so we can actually see the matress. First time we have en ountered this. The views did not disappoint and overall very relaxing. If you want peace and quiet, this is the place foe you. You have to love the way of life here to really enjoy the area. It is beautifull, rugged and calming.
I booked this last minute to get away from the busyness of life and this cottage was perfect for my tranquil getaway. I could sit outside and watch all the boats go by throughout the day and enjoy all of the stars at night. The area isn’t touristy or crowded which was such a nice experience after Portland and Acadia. Just be warned that everything within 30 miles closes by 8 PM, so plan accordingly. The cottage itself was cozy and well equipped with everything that I needed. I especially appreciated the gas fireplace on a dreary cold day. The WiFi was fast enough to handle my work meetings. When I had questions Heather answered them promptly.
There is so much to see and do around Jonesport. The cottage had everything we needed. We found lots of great hiking and seafood using the notes our host provided. We loved watching sunsets and yoga stretches from the porch.

Peaceful Location for a Maine coast Getaway
Lovely little cottage, nothing fancy but really well-maintained and very, very comfortable. Simple and utilitarian, very nice for a couple.

Cozy!
It was just what we were looking for. Peaceful, quaint and comfortable. Thanks!
Extremely quiet - almost deafening. Loved the breeze coming in from the ocean. Well kept property.
The shower was small and the bed a bit hard, but other than that, I enjoyed my stay

So glad you enjoyed your stay, Ann! Yes, the breezes are wonderful. And the silence broken by sea gulls and lobster boats is full of peace.
Would love to have you back!
Cute little campy type cottage. You can not beat the location! Beautiful harbor views and great beach for combing beach. Tons of sea glass, but most of the glass was not seasoned enough to take....but what I did find was fabulous....with some rare colors and some with lettering. Wass Island and Roque Bluffs were awesome .
Over all great place.
The view was amazing. Our only problem was that the floors and furniture was covered in dog hair. The bedspread was dirty, when I removed it there was a huge spider. There was hair in the shower. I advised owner and she responded that she was surprised as she had used the same maid for some time and had not had any
Problems.

Okay
There were a lot of rules and fees. The cottage is very small. We had to pay a fee for cleaning but no one came to clean the cottage every day. And there were dog hairs on the sofa and blankets when we arrived. We also had to put sheets on the bed and then take them off before leaving If we had to do that then why should we pay fees? Plus, the lodging fee being charged is higher than the normal rate.

I am sorry you were not happy with the cottage.
However - The bed was made. It was the pull out couch that was not made for you, but clean sheets, pillows, and blankets were provided in the drawer under the bed and in the storage coffee table. FYI, we usually just leave folded clean sheets for the renters to make up their beds themselves, but we made them for you.
We also made sure there were no "perfumes" in your cottage before you arrived because you said you were sensitive to smells. I rewashed all the bedding in sensitive detergent prior to your stay.
We went out of our way to bring you a bigger kitchen sponge, extra quilts because you didn't want to turn the gas fireplace on higher, a mesh filter because you wanted to make "cowboy coffee" because our coffee maker made too much coffee (???), an electric heater to go with the gas heater stove, and a beach towel because our rugs in front of the shower weren't "good enough."
This is a self-catering cottage, not a hotel. We do not bring in your luggage from the car (as you assumed when you arrived). We do not make your bed for you each day. The maid cleans at the end of your stay, and the fee is included in the nightly fee of $125 a night for staying on the ocean reach in Maine.
Please no longer rent a self-catering cottage. Only stay in hotels, otherwise you will be disappointed.

Just as described
I had a relaxing time visiting Jonesport. The cabin is just as described. I did have to spend more time in it then I had hoped as the weather was not as cooperative with me. My initial goal was to be come one with the sun, but her brother FOG was jealous and wouldn't leave me alone. Luckily I was prepared to enjoy the view from the windows with books and the such.
Things I liked about the cabin: Location
Things I wish had been different: Would have been nice to have kitchen towels and hot-pads. Also would be nice for more blankets. It got mighty cold at night and I had all the blankets I could find in the cabin already on my bed.
It would have also been nice if the yard was mowed, since it was so wet and the grass was so high, my shoes were soaked the whole weekend. Also, a bit of a path to the stairs leading to the water would be nice.

Thanks for the feedback, Jessica! Yes, we've had a hard time with the wet weather preventing the lawn service from being able to mow. We've asked them to try to mow sooner. The dish towels and pot holders seemed to have wandered off from last season. Thanks for letting us know. We've added new dish towels, pot holders, and blankets.
Thanks for helping us make our seaside cottage more comfortable for guests. Heather

Great location, super hosts
We booked a week here in August. It's a great location to explore northernmost Maine. Each day we were out in perfect, bug less weather to see another beautiful scene. Don't miss the Schoodic Penninsula, home to the less traveled Acadia National Park (east section). Also see Rocque Bluffs State Park--beautiful beach. Lubec is great with a lovely lighthouse state park. Across the short bridge in Canada is FDR's Campobello Island retreat yes, you'll need your passport and dog vaccine certificates to cross the border (both ways). Closer to Jonesport is the lovely, little used Sandy Beach. It is just 3.7 miles from the front porch. Drive East out of Jonesport when you pass the sign for Jolene's Fabrics on the left look for the well marked pedestrian crosswalk (2 signs, lights) just before the crosswalk turn left into the municipal parking lot and work station. Leave the car, walk over the crosswalk and down the short access path to the Long Beach. It is public space below the high water tide line. Stay off the private home properties beyond. The surf is calm, the water is clear and the beach is almost a mile long. That's a lot of sand for Maine! Our dogs loved it! There is one portapotty at the municipal lot but no other facilities and no personnel stationed on the beach. The ocean here is about 60 f in August so wading is about all one can do comfortably. Back to the Camp. It sits on a bluff above the port. The views are authentic Maine working seaport. The fisherman leave before the sunrise but we never heard go them so it's not disruptive to good sleep. Access to the beach is by two steps. The camp has one new one 20 yards from the deck and one right out front but it is very rickety be careful. It's 20+ steps down to the tidal beach which is not appealing for lounging or swimming. Jonesport is a working village port. Lots of flotsam, jetsom ends up in the water and on the beach. We went down there once but there was no reason to go again. The real view is from the sunny deck. Our hosts were very friendly and live onsite. They are not at all obtrusive but they are helpful, generous and fun to talk to as they are retired globe trotting scientists. We were happy at the camp. Jonesport is not Bar Harbor it is not touristy and the locals work hard to carve out a modest living is a difficult, dangerous profession. Everyone is very friendly in northern Maine; very friendly indeed.

Thank you so much for your detailed review. So glad you could come and enjoy Downeast Maine! You are welcome back anytime!
The property was a perfect blend of old world little cottage, views and a look at a way of life that was very interesting. Just as they said in the description, no commercialization up here. A true step back in time and look at a lobster fishing village. I recommend talking with the locals they are very friendly and helpful. Buying lobster right off the boat and talking with the lobstermen, walking out on the docks etc.was a great experience. Driving around the scenery is breathtaking.
We had a great time, and a deeper appreciation for the lobster/fishing world.
We had a wonderful time in this doll house. Everything was just right. Manager was very helpful sharing unique places to go i.e breakfast at the pizza shop open 5am to10am for lobstermen. Gas fireplace for that cold, wet and windy day. Very quiet and beautiful.
Cute little cottage overlooking the harbor right in town but nice and quiet very nice owner and locals cabin was clean and kept up nicely would definitely rent again
Loved the quiet simple way of life hubby would have liked a tv but we lived without it. Restaurants in area not the greatest but other than that it was great

Get away from it all!
My husband and I spent three weeks at this charming little cottage. It had just what we needed to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. The hosts Rick and Donna were so nice and gracious! We thoroughly enjoyed this working town, the views, the fog, the starry nights, the quiet, the lobsters, etc. etc. When it was foggy at home, we just had to drive 30 - 40 minutes inland to enjoy sandy bottom lakes with crystal clear waters. The daily tides were impressive. The lobster fresh as can be. The blueberries and raspberries wild and sweet. We can't wait to return.

About the host
Hosted by Heather McCollum
Braden and Heather McCollum bought the cottages in 2011. Originally owned by the McCollum family, they were thrilled to be able to buy them back. When they are not residing next to the cottages during the summer, they reside in North Carolina. They both attended the University of Maine at Machias, and Braden's grandfather was born and raised on the property.
Why they chose this property
The McCollum Cottages date back to the early 1900's and there used to be around six cottages in all. They are situated on a bluff above Moosabec Reach on McCollum Rd., overlooking McCollum Beach. Given this history - the McCollum's needed to get them back in the family and make them available for others to enjoy again!!
What makes this property unique
Situated right on a bluff above the ocean in the heart of a working fishing community, these cottages allow you to escape, relax, and explore in a comfy environ offering stunning views. Purchase lobster right from local piers.
