About the property

Come and experience relaxation and utter bliss in this luxury old-Hawaii style retreat in the heart of beautiful Volcano Village. Ku’ulei Hale was designed by local architect Boone Morrison, famous for his dazzling and unique open-beamed styles that grant an unparalleled closeness to nature while offering all the modern comforts and amenities one could desire on a Hawaiian rainforest getaway.

This enchanting 3BD/2BA property is set on a half acre of meticulously maintained gardens and outdoor spaces, designed to offer maximum enjoyment in a most pristine atmosphere. Every detail of this home, from the large covered lanai which is accessible from two bedrooms or from the living room through large sliding glass doors, to the hand-set lava fire pit with Adirondack chairs and outdoor shower with soaking tub, surrounded by native Hapu’u ferns and fragrant Kahili ginger, will delight your senses and draw you into the magic which makes Volcano one of the most beautiful places on earth.

The interior is characterized by beautifully finished eucalyptus floors, a large open chef’s kitchen with panoramic windows, a spacious living area tastefully decorated with local Hawaiian and Asian-themed art, and centered around a wood-burning stove complete with original herringbone wood detail. There is also an extensive library of meticulously selected literature about Hawaiian art, culture and language for your enjoyment. Throughout the home, impressive skylights and a soothing, natural color palate compliment and enhance the stunning surroundings. The master bedroom and en-suite master bath provide sanctuary from the rest of the home, while the semi-open plan and high ceilings deliver a sense of closeness without compromising privacy.

Both bathrooms are equipped with walk-in showers and modern rustic fixtures. The master bath is also equipped with a large bathtub and custom-designed window-side vanity. Perfect for families, honeymooners, design enthusiasts and artists like, the Ku’ulei Hale is the epitome of modern leisure, while paying cultural and architectural homage to the splendor of old Hawai’i.

Gorgeous setting on the rainforest/volcano side of the island

  • 5 of 5

The home is gorgeous. It’s centrally locatesd for everything we wanted to do on this side of the island. Volcano, Jagger Museum, steam vents, Lava tube. We went to Warm Ponds, Japanese Garden, Coconut Island, Black Ssnd Beach (turtles)..

Comfy beds, nice seating areas, beautiful surroundings. It’s so peaceful here. You only hear the birds singing. I definitely recommend KuuleiHale for your stay near the volcano. Bring warm clothes for this side of the island. Aloha!

Mahalo, Joey for making everything easy. Much appreciated!

The home is beautiful and clean, but cold in winter months.

  • 3 of 5

We looked forward to our one-night stay to make a visit to VNP more convenient. This home is perfectly located for exploring the park or Hilo. The home is clean and looks just like the pictures. The kitchen is well stocked for cooking, including some spices (we only made a simple breakfast). The yard is beautiful and tranquil, but we did not sit outside due to the cold weather. I think this would be the perfect place to stay in spring, summer, and early fall, but it was quite cold for us (early January). There was no central heating that we could find, and not enough kindling to get a fire started. The temperature inside the house was 60 when we went to bed and 57 when we woke up the next morning (there’s a digital thermometer on the bookshelf). We would recommend providing extra blankets, and updating the listing to note the heating situation. There was plenty of hot water for a shower and that helped us warm up. We would not hesitate to stay again during warmer weather, and this experience has taught me to look closely at VRBO listings and to be sure to ask about heat or AC at a property depending on time of year.

Beautiful house, but COLD

  • 2 of 5

The house, furnishings, and garden were beautiful. But our stay in early December was very cold and damp inside the house. We never got warm.

Lovely, well equipped and inviting

  • 5 of 5

We were two adult couples who stayed for three nights to visit Volcanoes National Park, just a few minutes away. Weather was perfect for our visit, no rain, clear skies, beautiful days. This is a beautiful house, landscaped with several outdoor "rooms" that we enjoyed exploring. It was great for us, very quiet, very clean and well equipped with a good instruction book about various features. Beds were comfortable, two queens and a day bed in the third room. The library, porch and great room were very inviting. I enjoyed perusing the book collection (lots of Hawaiian history, baseball books, novels, etc.) . We didn't use the kitchen much, just made coffee and light breakfast, but it did seem to have the requisite cooking items and an array of spices. We made use of the outdoor fire pit one evening, but never used the outdoor shower. I'd have just one real suggestion - if a dryer cannot be made available, I suggest adding a towel warmer to each bathroom. Towels used for bathing were still damp when next used 24 hours later - it's humid enough that they just didn't dry completely when hung on towel bars. I don't think there is a furnace or air conditioning, neither of which we needed as the weather couldn't have been better.

Our group of 3 couples stayed overnight while visiting the volcano. So close and convenient to the park and a beautiful and comfortable house! We loved it.

Beautifully decorated, spacious, and elegant

  • 5 of 5

We regularly stay in Volcano when we visit the Park and have rented many lovely units. This one is the nicest we have enjoyed. Care was clearly taken in design and layout to provide a spacious and comfortable feel with a sense of quality. While we are only a party of three staying for one night, we did wonder how larger parties ate meals at the small table in the kitchen which comfortably seated four. Overall, this unit is now our first choice for a stay at Volcano.
