2009 DEAL--Any last-minute stay (booked two weeks or less before arrival) gets 10% off! That's an incredible price of $1080/week (plus cleaning and taxes). This is not an incentive to procrastinate, it's more of a bonus for spur of the moment action. Check our online calendar, it's always up to date.

Guests often comment that our home exceeded their expectations. It's probably because of all the local materials and the attention to detail. There are local hard-wood floors throughout (even the bathrooms and kitchen), custom stained glass windows, granite counter tops, and lots of original artwork. There's also an outdoor shower, two beach cruiser bicycles, purified (by reverse osmosis) drinking water, your own water well with whole house ultra violet filtration system (no worries about running out of water or other problems association with "catchment systems" that are common in our area), solar-heated hot water, various board games, some good Hawaiiana books, various floaty pool toys, and plenty of etc.

MASTER BEDROOM (UPSTAIRS)
A comfortable king sized bed with soft cotton sheets, vintage rattan reading chair and ottoman, mango dresser, ceiling fan, 2 reading lamps, and an alarm clock. The direct ocean view from the bedroom also allows for great breezes. The wide balcony is directly in front of both upstairs bedrooms.

2ND BEDROOM (UPSTAIRS)
A comfortable queen sized bed also with soft cotton sheets, writing desk and chair that faces the ocean, computer for your internet usage, 2 reading lamps, ceiling fan, and a dresser make this a fully functional room with that same huge ocean view.

UPSTAIRS BATHROOM
The bathroom is accessed by both bedrooms. It has a tub/shower and sink/vanity in one room, and a separate room for the toilet.

DOWNSTAIRS BEDROOM
A comfortable and charming queen sized iron bed, with good cotton sheets, a free-standing armoire, ceiling fan, chair, a free-form mango-wood built-in table and 2 reading lights. This room is set back from the front of the house but still has an incredible ocean view. It also has an intriguing stained glass window depicting Kilauea Volcano.

DOWNSTAIRS BATHROOM
Tub/shower, vanity and sink, toilet, and incredible large stained glass window depicting a Polynesian voygaging canoe and a variety of wildlife

LIVING SPACE AND KITCHEN
The living room is decorated with a vintage Hawaiian look, yet with DISH TV, and the classic comfortable rattan furniture and original artwork. There's a full sized dining table with 6 chairs, as well as 4 bar chairs. We can tell you that the front door is one big stained glass ocean scene. You can get lost in it--seriously. However, you will need to see it for yourself.

HEALTH ISSUES
The triple filtered drinking water is a big bonus. Many, if not most, houses in our area use "catchment" systems, catching water off their roof. There are good filter systems, and there are less-than-good filter systems. We have an excellent reverse osmosis system that actually purifies your drinking water. FYI, wherever you decide to stay in East Hawaii you should ask about their water system.

HUMPBACK WHALES -- WOW, THEY CAN BE CLOSE.
In front of our home, the ocean gets deep quickly. Because of this, their birthing and mating months (December - April) are excellent times for hearing humpback whales at night, and of course seeing them by day. Their tail slapping can wake you up--no kidding.

IN CONCLUSION
Our home is fully functional, clean, comfortable, AND in a great location. In short, it is "homey". You will be only 25 minutes from Hilo Airport, Downtown, Bayfront or Richardson's Beach and 20 minutes from Pahoa, a Great/Funky Restaurant town. You will be 30 minutes from the warm ponds at Ahalanui and the Marine Sanctuary where you can snorkel with tame good-sized schools of fish! You're also 45 minutes to Volcanoes National Park (location of the historical Kilauea Caldera, and home of Pele the fire goddess) and 45 minutes away, in the other direction, from the Ocean Entry for Flowing Lava. This is subject to change of course, but has been amazingly steady of late.

If you're looking for a comfortable spacious truly OCEANFRONT home, retreat, and a base of operations, this is it. This is the house that Jack built, in 1998. First camping out in the would-be garage, then creating an artistic retreat/bachelor pad, and ultimately a great family home. We happily lived there for many years.

The ocean is mesmerizing by day, lulling to deep sleep at night. The oceanside deck with spa and swimming pool will become your outdoor living room. The neighborhood is nice and friendly and you can walk or ride bikes for miles along the coast in either direction. Or you can hang out. You just might not want to leave.

    • Dryer
    • Linens Provided: Sheets are all 100% cotton, 200 thread count, or higher. Towels are sufficiently thirsty and kitchen towels are plentiful.
    • Garage: On the back of the house, so it functions as a giant mud room and staging area for sports and activities--very convenient. It also works as a car garage and to be able to come directly into the house in case it is late or raining.
    • Covered Parking
    • Off Street Parking: Plenty of parking for cars in the yard.
    • Parking for RV/Boat/Trailer
  • Beds
    • King Bed: In the Master Bedroom. This one is called "the pink cloud". We make sure to have comfortable beds--we come to visit too!
    • Queen Bed: The other upstairs bedroom and the downstairs bedroom both have comfortable queen beds. Our friends and family wouldn't be very happy with us if the beds weren't comfortable.
    • Convertible Bed: The living room has a queen-sized futon bed that is always open. It doubles as a day bed, called a "Punee" in Hawaiian. The punee is a long-standing tradition in Hawaiian homes. You never know when you might need a little nap, especially when on vacation.
  • Entertainment
    • Cable/Satellite TV: Dish TV is provided, even though you might not get around to using it much.
    • DVD
    • Video Library: We have some popular or interesting DVDs. Also, about 10 board games and a variety of novels as well as some really good Hawaiiana resource books.

    • Dishwasher: Very quiet. No need to time its operations because it might interfere with other fun.
    • Microwave
    • Ice Maker
    • Catering Available
  • Outdoor Features
    • Gas/Electric BBQ Grill: A large propane grill is provided. It sure is fun to cook up a bunch of fresh local fish. Jack prefers Aku (not always available) as Sashimi or grilled. You can get it from the local supermarket, KTA, and sometimes from roadside sellers/fishermen.
    • Deck/Patio: An elevated platform next to the pool and hot tub, that affords a great view of the coastline both north and south. It may become your favorite "room" at the house.
    • Balcony
    • Lanai: A cool and quiet area, outside the upstairs bedrooms, with an even better view of the coastline and the grand Pacific Ocean. Plenty of room for everyone to hang out up here. There are 4 comfortable outdoor chairs for your relaxation.

    • Oceanfront: You will love the sound of waves breaking against the rocks. It is very comforting and will lull you to sleep at night and provide endless entertainment during the day. The drop from the rocks in front of the house to the water is about 25 feet and sometimes you see Green Sea Turtles or other fish swimming in the super clear water. It's pretty fantastic. You can also fish here, though you'll need to bring your own gear.

Why the Owner Chose Hilo

East Hawaii is varied, and exciting; the volcano never ceases to inspire and thrill. Madame Pele gives her unique energy to the whole of East Hawaii, and especially the Puna District. We have lived in East Hawaii for so long, and this house was our home, until we moved to the Big City of Hilo. Jack built this home in 1998, after living a few blocks away for about 15 years.

The Unique Benefits at this Oceanfront Home

Because our home is almost at the end of a quiet dead-end street, it is very restful and private. We like to find new spots, via bicycle, or hiking boots, or swimming fins. There are so many incredible places to explore and we never get tired of adventuring. We like to walk or bike the coastline--for miles. To the south, we go to some tidepools about 1 1/2 miles away. To the north, we bike, then hike the last bit to a white sand beach that's about 5 miles away. We also spend many hours lounging back and forth between the hot tub, the pool, and lazing around on the deck. It's so private and quiet--we love it.

A
Makuu Tide Pools

A picturesque spot for fishing or soaking. About 1 mile south of Makuu Drive on Beach Road.

B
Shipman Beach

A beautiful white sand bay, with cool, refreshing waters, accessed by an ocean-front trail only. It's about 2 miles north of Kaloli Point Road.

Owner's Map of Hilo

Here we are checking out the lava flow. We have lived in East Hawai`i for almost 30 years, so we obviously love Hawai`i. Jack is a 3rd generation Hardwood Flooring Contractor and Barbara is a jaquette of all trades, most recently working for the County of Hawai`i.

    • We had such a lovely time! The house was perfect for relaxing, cooking, lounging, playing games, and all hanging out together. The pool and spa were a blast, we were swimming all day! The grounds and house are very well taken care of, the beds were very comfortable, the kitchen was well-equipped, the living area is spacious, there were plenty of towels, lots of fun pool toys, and the interior was beautiful. Such a great place to stay! I wish we could have stayed longer.

    • I wanted to escape the hustle and bustle of Waikiki, so I again booked the Beach Road Home knowing that I would be arriving at a beautiful house at the end of a pine tree-lined road and walking out onto a deck with a spectacular view of sky and sea. I remembered that unique feeling of peace and joy when I arrived. Once again I was struck by the beauty of the natural all-wood home and its captivating spaciousness, and the many large windows and lanais, giving you full access to the sky-swept sea right outside the front door. With waves crashing, and dolphins and whales (if you’re lucky) playing yards off the front-yard cliffs, you can have an ocean adventure without leaving the luxury of the jacuzzi or the freshness of the pool. This vacation spot is truly like having your own personal spa experience. I spent my days and nights between preparing healthy and appetizing meals, walking along the beautiful black volcanic cliffs by the Hawaiian pine forest, and relaxing on the lanai. I alternated between the healing waters of the jacuzzi and the refreshing coolness of the blue-tiled pool, all the while dreaming lazily out at the vast and wild and beautiful, brilliant blue sea. Can you hear the waves crashing, see the whales, dolphins, and sea birds flying and feel the warm Hawaiian breeze all combining to bring you the peace and joy of deep relaxation and pure fun? Whether your intention is peace and relaxation, as mine was, or fun and excitement, as mine turned into, you will be glad you choose this spot for your vacation!

    • Our family has enjoyed extended stays at “Jack’s House” for four consecutive years. We always enjoy this comfortable, well-equipped house located on a wonderfully picturesque lava beach with a wide expanse of the Pacific Ocean offered for viewing. We’ve experienced “it all”—sunny days, windy days, rainy days, rainbows, high surf, calm ocean waters; it doesn’t matter as it’s all GREAT! The house is large enough on two levels to provide “spaces” to tuck away with a good read on days that keep you inside—all with views of the ocean. On days that are welcoming, there is no place better to relax than the large deck providing deck seating and lounging along with a hot tub and pool. We always enjoy revisiting the artistic touches to this house with its warm wood interior and Hawaiiana furnishings. Humpback whale sightings are frequent during our winter stays and we’ve heard whales “blowing” as they come quite close to the house at times. The general location is what we look for: hidden away, but close to Big Island tourist attractions and general shopping—especially the Puna attractions and laid-back ambiance. As an added note, an elderly mother finds this house very suitable to her needs as she has access to everything the house offers on the ground level; she misses out on nothing! In a nutshell, it’s a great place to be on the Big Island. You’ll call it “our house” just as we do!

    • Aloha, I have been a guest in this lovely oceanfront home. Beautiful wooden floors, stained glass windows, comfy beds with crisp linens, always immaculate. Love the kitchen and the amenities provided. The sound of the ocean with the hot tub and a splendid view of the coastline, made all of my visits relaxing and pleasurable. I will indeed return. • barbara and Jack, your house was the perfect place to be. Float in the pool and stargaze. We loved the area for the solitude yet access to fun things to do. Loved it so much we sent our daughter there on her honeymoon. Thank you for the perfect spot to relax. JW

    • While I do not usually take much time to comment on hotels or rentals or travel in general.....I had to comment on your Puna Coast stress management paradise! Anna and I spent four of the best days of our lives there. The huge view of the wild blue pacific and braided lava out front is one we will never forget. Especially when floating in the cozy pool. We were so relaxed we constantly forget what time it was and missed several excursions because we could not drag ourselves to the car! Go see the volcano? Let's do it tomorrow. Snorkel down by Kapoho? WE have time, don't we? I'll have some more papaya first. Isn't there a really beautiful waterfall up on the Hamakua coast? Oh, here is a picture of it in one of the many house books right here on the beautiful koa table. (the wood work and stained glass in your place is a joy to behold) On one rainy night we sat silent and drank up the sounds of the ocean and the rain. We slept the sleep of children and dreamt of fish and palm trees and glowing lava. We felt sooo at home and it is also very romantic. The beds and bathrooms are great, the kitchen is very nice and it just made us want to share it all with our closest friends and family. This Hawaii is real. A nice hotel is well, a nice hotel. But your place is so much more. Private and no need to hang a Do Not Disturb sign. We can still hear the ocean as swells from great distances meet the black lava cliffs and spray and splash and cool us down. Thanks for thinking of everything that made us so happy in your wonderful house. Steve and Anna
