Ah....Daufuskie! Take the county ferry from Hilton Head and feel the stress of the week peel away with the breezes and the smell of the ocean.
Take the transport from the Landing to Melrose Plantation, winding thru the centuries old Live Oaks, pass the Equestrian Center and between the lush golf course greens on to your cottage.
Unlock the door to be welcomed by a magnificent view of the Atlantic. No need to flip coins to see who gets the bigger room, both are the same size with two Queens beds each and private baths.
The Cherry Cabinets in the open kitchen have all the necessary pots, pans, plates, glasses and utensils, with plenty of room for your groceries. It doesn't matter that the appliances are stainless and the counters are granite, it just helps you entertain more graciously.
The hardest thing to do on Daufuskie is to decide between walking the quiet, clean beach, reading a book, searching for the elusive alligator in the ponds, the seasonal Sea Turtle eggs or historic relics from the Civil War. Then again a horseback ride, game of tennis, or a round of golf at the Jack Nicholas golf course might satisfy. Or you could visit the Silver Dew Pottery or the Gullah and Island Museum or the Community Farm. Or just see what the island offers your senses by kayak, golf cart, bike or foot.

Daufuskie Island Oceanfront Two Bedroom & Two Bath Beach House
Year Purchased: 2004
Why the Owner Chose Daufuskie Island Resort
Daufuskie intrigued our business and vacation interests. We knew that owning a place where our family could go on a weekend that didn't stress us out with traffic jams, long restaurant lines, and t-shirt shops one after the other AND be on the Atlantic Ocean within 5 hours was a good investment in family time.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage
The old oak and pine trees line the paved and dirt roads, inviting exploration. The Atlantic Ocean waves pound the beach, while the shrimp boats pass with heavy nets, all while I sit on my porch steps. Our teenage daughters beg to show their school friends the treasures of the island, driftwood strewn beaches and lounge time. In warmer weather, we rent kayaks to paddle up the waterways around Daufuskie to find Indian relics from ancient settlements and spot cruising dolphins close enough to see their eyes. At night, we might sip wine with new found friends, or walk the beach looking at the amazing array of stars we can't see in the city.

My wife and I were married on New Year's Eve and after all the craziness of planning a wedding we knew we wanted to go someplace quiet to soak it all in and get some much-needed rest. THANK THE LORD above that we stumbled upon Loretta's wonderful cottage on Daufuskie! We stayed here for the first week of January and the weather could not have been better. For the entirety of our stay in the amazing beach front cottage, we walked the pristine beach every day and while we saw the footprints of other visitors in the sand, we never laid eyes on another human being on the beach. We felt like we had discovered our own private island, and it turns out that was exactly what we had done. Even if the weather had been terrible we would have enjoyed every second of our stay since the cottage is spacious, oh so comfortable, and decorated beautifully. We're used to going to the Gulf, where every condo looks like it was decorated by a mermaid and the Easter Bunny working together. Not so at Loretta's cottage. It's such a tastefully appointed cottage and we felt at home from the second we walked through the door. As for Loretta, a better hostess would be hard to find. She worked with us throughout the lead-up to our visit, providing us with great info about boat rentals to get to the island and cart rentals while we were on Daufuskie. She is a class-act and her cottage reflects her amazing spirit in every detail. I could go on and on and on about this incredible spot on this unforgettable island, but suffice it say if you're looking to get away from the average beach vacation that's too often spoiled by overbuilding and overcrowding, then get your a$$ to Daufuskie Island, relax in style, and let Loretta's cottage spoil the heck out of you. We'll be back again and again, Joe and Kathryn York

We went to Daufuskie on over memorial weekend and it was wonderful. The seclusion was just what we needed. The Island was as if we were on it alone. The amount of wild life was amazing, untouched even through all the years. The cottage was so much more then what the pictures tell. It was very clean and nicely decorated. The whole time we were there it felt like home. We cant wait to go back next year. Thank you Loretta!!

What a great cottage and awesome location right on the beach! Our family spent Easter weekend and had such a relaxing weekend. We had ages 8 to 64 and everyone enjoyed the island. Kitchen is perfectly stocked and organized. The bedrooms were large and beds comfy! The bathrooms also quite nice and very spacious. Loved the screened porch with ocean view. The beach was clean with plenty of room to roam without running into anyone! My kids spent two mornings observing 30 - 40 large horseshoe crabs make their way to the water - awesome! We loved the Easter service at the island church - definitely a must if you are there on Sunday!
Owner response:Dear Dianne, So glad your family had such a good time on the Island. Your comments are very kind, thank you. I've never seen that many horseshoe crabs on the beach! Your children were witnessing one of of the many seasonal delights of this natural wonder. Next will come the Sea turtles nesting. Good to hear you were able to make the services in the historic church. We haven't heard a bad sermon there yet. Did you get the opportunity to see how time has evolved through the chandeliers? Please send pictures if you have any to share, Loretta

Myself and three girlfriends decided to really get away from it all this year. We were lucky enough to stumble upon Loretta's Daufuskie Island house and found a paradise. We visited in November, so it was chilly, but perfect weather for finding sand dollars and shells on the beach and relaxing (in a sweatshirt) on the extremely comfortable covered porch. The island is accessible by ferry only, which made planning a little more complex, but the island, this house, and the ambiance is more than worth it. The house is beautifully decorated, and very comfortably sized. Loretta is a wonderful hostess, very thorough and solicitous with her guests. When the gas logs would not light, someone was at the house within 24 hours to troubleshoot the problem. In November, there was almost nobody else in the neighborhood, but I understand from talking to the locals that it gets much busier in the summertime. I can't say enough good things about this property, we will definitely be coming back to Daufuskie and Loretta's house. She recommended Brit Moon to us for the ferry ride and golf cart rental and we were not disappointed. Everything ran right on time. Amazing island, amazing house, amazing hostess.

This trip was the most awesome adventure that we friends have been on together. There are 4 of us that go on girlfriend's getaways as often as we can. This was a true adventure and we loved every minute of it. Loretta is an awesome hostess and she gave us very good instructions in order to prepare for our trip. I planned the trip and was the only 1 of the 4 that knew where we were going. 2 of the 3 left are afraid of water so I intentionally didn't tell them that we had to take a ferry boat to get to our destination. At first, they were a little apprehensive, but they trust me. Thank God! I wouldn't have wanted to miss this one. Anyway, I had taken a huge roll-on piece of luggage and we used this to put our groceries in that we purchased at Hilton Head. They sell a few things on the island but not much. We didn't eat out at all. We actually tried a few times but the none of the restaurants were open when we decided to try them. We drove our rented golf cart all around the island exploring the wildlife and loving the peace and serenity of it all. The beach was pretty much our private paradise. There were only a few other people on it the whole time we were there. The Lord even furnished us souvenirs to take home in the way of beautiful conch shells that had washed up on the sand. All of us loved the screened in porch and chose to eat most of our meals there. We saw the eagle flying high in the sky on a couple of occasions. This island is rich in history and we went and toured the historical sights. Our favorite being the the old church - First Union African Baptist Church. The people we met were so friendly and welcoming. We were blessed because we happen to be there on the 5th Sunday of the month and a gentleman had come all the way from NC to play the piano and sing. It was truly a spiritual experience. I didn't know that Daufuskie Island existed but I'm so glad to have visited there. I know that I will return in the future. If you're needing a respite, a place to rest, have peace and wash off the ravages of this life, then go. You will not be sorry. It does require a little planning (groceries, golf cart rental, ferry), but it is all so worth it. The memories will always bring smiles to our faces. The cottage is immaculate and there wasn't anything that we could have asked for that wasn't already provided. Loretta provided a much need haven for all of us. Thanks, Loretta. God bless you and your family =)
Owner response:Skytrader, Your review is heartwarming and reassuring that even though with the economy of the Inn and it's properties without management at this time, the cottages and the rest of the Island still enchant and welcome visitors. When a visitor is ready to escape the everyday hustle most of us deal with, whether in a group, family, couple or single, Daufuskie is just as you said, "peaceful respite" with plenty to inspire. You are the Blessing. Thank you, Loretta

I took my wife, daughter (13), sister, brother-in-law, nephew (5) & niece (3) for a 4 night stay in Loretta's cottage. The cottage is beautifully maintained and superbly located right on the beach front. Lorreta was very helpful. I definitely recommend this cottage to people wanting a quiet, beach front vacation. We catered for ourselves but did eat lunch out once at the 'Dirt Road Diner' on one day. I would recommend it. Very low key but excellent food and service ! We rented a golf cart to get us arounf the island. We played tennis, rode horses, went for many walks along the beach and generally explored the island. We just love Daufuske :-) Getting to the island was no problem. We brought some empty roll-ons that we filled with groceries at Publix on Hilton Head, we also took a rolling cooler. We saw dolphin and pelican on both journeys to and from the island. The transportation from Freeport to/from the cottage is over prived but does include two bags per person. We avoided the cost on our return to Freeport by using the rented cart to get most of our party and belongings back to Freeport. Having stayed at Daufuskie with the resort was up and running (in the past), it was a little heart breaking to see it all shut down. I just wish I had a few million to invest ! However, this did not distract from our vacation and was an advantage in some respects. The island was quieter and tennis was free :-) We also explored the island more than we may have done if the resort was running. I would recommend walking the entire length of the beach, especially around Bloody Point. My nephew and niece just loved the beach and spent a lot of time in the water. The cottage conveniently has an outside shower to clean all the sand off. This got a lot of use. Thank you so much for sharing your cottage Loretta, it is so beautiful. We had a fantastic time !

It was my second stay. My first visit was so relaxing I decided to bring my sisters back for some quality time. They loved it, too. The cottage is beautiful and comfortable. The owner makes it a special time, providing information on the island and keeping me well informed on my reservation needs. The front porch offers a wonderful view of the Atlantic, nestled between Hilton Head and Savannah. We visited the Silver Dew Pottery and purchased a beautiful piece created on location and we loved the fried dill pickles at the Dirt Road Diner ! Ernestine, a Daufuskie native and cook, prepared a delicious meal and delivered it to us. At the end of the day the front porch and a game of Canasta set the mood for a relaxing night of fun, creating more family memories. If you want to create wonderful memories, too, I highly recommend this beautiful cottage .

My family had a fantastic time staying at this cottage. It is very clean with up to date furniture and appliances. The rooms are large and accommodating. It has everything you need for a visit to the island. It’s on the beach, near the pool, and very well appointed. The owner was very helpful in letting us know everything we needed for a visit to Daufuskie. We will definitely make a return visit.
Owner response: Thank you for your great review. Hope you can make it back this year. Return renters get a discount on theirs and any referrals. Kind regards, Loretta
