We spent a quick weekend at High Chaparral in May, which served as our 'home base' for touring the wine roads, and serving as a base camp for little hikes and walks. It was a truly spectacular location, with a porch overlooking row after row of sage green hills, and is set up just high enough to be nestled in the trees, which gives you a bit of cooler air when the sun is high. We were particularly happy to find such a location to be dog-friendly, and Linda was thoughtful enough to leave dog bowls out before we arrived. We slept late, took hikes through the trees, admired the spring wildflowers, watched the hummingbirds and warbler nesting right off the back porch, and had a thoroughly relaxing weekend. High Chaparral comes highly recommended, and we'll definitely be back. Cheers!Recommended for: Pet owners, romantic getaway, girls getaway, adventure seekers.
Owner response: Thank you Sara. We hope to see you and your pack again!

I, along with my husband and another couple, spent a week at High Chaparral. This was the perfect place for us! If you enjoy listening to the wind go through the pine trees, hearing birds and crickets sing, and seeing a sky full of stars, then you will love this place. The rooms were comfortable and clean but we spent most of our time on the front porch. The kitchen was well equipped and there was even a barbecue, so meal preparation was very easy. A few cautions:The location is remote and there are no street lights so I would encourage fellow visitors to try to arrive during the day to decrease the possibility of getting lost. Water is provided by a well so guests are encouraged to be conservation minded. For those people new to the Southern Okanagan, there are rattlesnakes so it would be beneficial to educate yourself before your trip. High Chaparral is just outside of Oliver and within easy driving distance of Okanagan Falls and Osoyoos. The wineries are plentiful and close by and there are some very nice restaurants at some of them, most notably Terrafina at Hester Creek and Miradoro at Tinhorn Creek. There were no televisions or radios on site, but for us this was a plus. Wireless internet is provided and allowed us to keep connected to the outside world and do some research on the wineries. Written visitor materials were also provided for guests. Our hosts, Linda and Bruce, were friendly and helpful. Their property is natural and beautiful!Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, adventure seekers, sightseeing.
Owner response: Thank you Kate. It was a pleasure to have your group stay with us. Hope to see you again in the future.

My wife and I stayed here for three nights to kick off a 2 week BC vacation. We had a wonderful time relaxing on the property. It is a unique place, and truly beautiful. We would love to come back some day, and likely will. We initially were concerned that there is an adjoining suite with a shared kitchen. However, the first two nights the other suite was not occupied, and on the third night we actually had a great time socialising with the other couple. I would not hesitiate to recommend this suite to others. We loved it there. The pictures don't do it justice.Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, girls getaway, adventure seekers, sightseeing.
Owner response: Thank you both. It was a pleasure to have you stay with us. Hope to see you again.

Our second visit to High Chaparral

The High Chaparral is even more spectacular than the pictures suggest. There are no other houses in sight, very few cars come up the road, and the closest neighbours live on the other side of the hill. Only the coyotes and birds disturb your peace. Be sure to bring your binoculars and spotting scope if you're into wildlife watching! The furnishings are luxurious, the kitchen would be at home in a multi-million dollar Vancouver condo, and the patio is geared to total relaxation. If you don't feel like cooking, you can always take yourself off to one of the outstanding local wineries for lunch. We highly recommend Mirador at Tinhorn Creek (order the black pepper pasta if it's available - amazing!) Our hostess Linda is an absolute charmer, who ensures that your stay is everything you could ever hope for. Our first visit was outstanding; the second was marred a bit by an unusually cold May wind that made sitting outside uncomfortable (and that was a real disappointment for two keen birdwatchers). But I know that Linda would have done everything in her power to fix that if she could. We highly recommend the High Chaparral and look forward to another visit in the summer, when the weather really does warm up. You'll have a wonderful time relaxing on the patio and drinking in the peace and quiet with your complimentary bottle of wine.Recommended for: Age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway, girls getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: Thank you John and Phyllis. Always a pleasure to have you stay. We look forward to your next visit complete with fair weather.

We had the pleasure of staying for 5 nights over Ironman Canada 2011 race weekend. The sheer beauty of not only the accomodation but the area was enough to calm our pre race nerves. The suite was fantastic and every detail was thought of, even the binoculars! It was very quiet, no cars, no people, no sirens. Just coyotes, birds, and assorted creature noises. We couldn't have picked a better place to relax before the race and recover afterwards. Oh and the stars, breath-taking. Thanks to Linda and Bruce for creating such a beautiful setting! We would highly recommend High Chaparral and can't wait to come back to some serious hiking and biking! Elsa and ShaunRecommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, adventure seekers, sightseeing.

What a wonderful surprise, after a long drive from Vancouver, to find this sweet little adobe get-away facing out over a perfect, endless view of the okanagon desert. Not a soul in sight and only the sound of hawks and the breeze, a bottle of complimentary wine awaiting us. My mother and I spent a perfect four nights and days exploring wineries, riding our bikes, swimming and just relaxing at High Chapparel taking in the view and the silence. The rooms and shared kitchen are lovingly designed with every detail attended to. Bring groceries along, as you won't want to leave once you get there! We give this place a five out of five and plan to be repeat visitors. Book ahead as I predict this place will soon be discovered!Recommended for: Age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway, girls getaway, sightseeing.

Everything about the High Chaparral guest house is excellent. Every imaginable detail is thought of and the house and amenities are impeccable. The house is completely private and the view is ever changing with the time of day and weather. On top of that the hosts, Linda and Bruce are welcoming and informative. My husband missed out on this trip, so we will be visiting again so he can also enjoy this experience also. Thank you Linda and Bruce for everything (including the camera charger return!) Best wishes and we look forward to visiting again.Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, girls getaway, sightseeing.

The photos and descriptions on the website do not capture the quality of the construction or the beauty of the area. Our stay at the guest house was enjoyable beyond our expectations. Linda and Bruce have created a environment that makes it feel like you are visiting friends. We would enthusiastically recommend this as a vacation destination.Recommended for: Pet owners, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2008
About the owner: Your Hosts: Linda and Bruce. We have enjoyed many trips to the Okanagan over the years. We purchased our 80 acre property and moved to Oliver at the end of 2007. After 25 plus years working in the film industry in Vancouver, Linda now enjoys running the High Chaparral Guest House. Bruce continues to commute between Vancouver and Oliver working on various film projects during the week. We live in a separate residence on the acreage with our house dogs, Dunbar and Oliver and Angus the cat.
Why the Owner Chose Oliver:
Our setting is very private and peaceful, nestled high in the hills West of the town of Oliver. The scent of ponderosa pine and wild sage enchant the senses while the breeze whispers through the trees. Our property is home to many species of birds, including grouse, sage thrashers, bluebirds, hummingbirds, eagles, hawks and vultures. In the Spring many beautiful wild flowers cover the surrounding hills. Ancient deer paths are present throughout the acreage, still used today by our resident deer and are an easy hike for our guests. Oliver is home to world class restaurants and over 40 award winning wineries.
The Unique Benefits at this Chateau / Country House:
While set in privacy of the pristine wilderness - we are only 10 minutes from Main St., Oliver. From High Chaparral Guest House you can visit over 30 wineries, 2 golf courses, many hiking trails, 3 lakes. After a day of wine tasting, you can return to the guest house, prepare your dinner and enjoy some of our local wines, while taking in the spectacular sunset. High Chaparral has two private suites, each with a separate entrance. A fully equipped kitchen is available for your use at no extra cost.
