Beautiful view and property
Had a great time. We will come back again.
A beautiful retreat for the weary soul.
Gorgeous house on the water
The Admiral's Quarters unit in the Mermaid's House is a beautiful, tranquil retreat.
Truly special spot on the bay!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Mermaid's House (Admiralty Quarters) over the long Thanksgiving Weekend, 2019!!!! We were fortunate to have 3 days of gorgeous sun/cloud weather and then a day or so of rain and wind. All of it was bliss! The location is amazing, the home being on stilts over the water, affording sloshy sounds at night and splendid views by day! Gulls, pelicans, loons, grebes, all manner of water birds.
Mermaid's House is just a mile or so south of Hog Island Oyster Company and a mile or so north of Tony's (New!) Seasfood Restaurant (now owned by Hog Island OC), where we had a lovely dinner. And our personal favorite spot for oysters, The Marshall Store, is just another mile down the road from Tony's. Then another mile or two is Marconi Conference Center, which is a State Park with lots of walking trails and gorgeous views of the bay -- with luck, you'll see deer, vultures, and in wet weather, lots of mushrooms, salamanders, lichens, etc.
But as special as the location and the view of the bay afforded by Mermaid's House is the home itself, lovingly and creatively decorated with an astounding abundance of nautical, maritime, and marine biological pieces, many clearly of some age. Mermaids, pirates, penguins, fish, ship sail posters, seashells, dried marine life (some of which, though, i might have preferred had been left in their more natural habitat, but they did make interesting viewing), I can't even think of the variety of interesting objects, a new one appearing seemingly by the minute.
The home is very well furnished with books (many old collections and also many treating local wildlife, trails, parks, etc.), fully equipped kitchen, with plenty of cooking utensils and condiments and even a bowlful of apples in the fridge.
In short, we fully intend to return to Mermaid's House, and may even consider (as others have done, judging by the guest log book) renting both sides to share it all with friends or family. It's a wonderful accommodation and we are so very grateful to Fred and Karen for sharing their lovely home with us and with so many other happy guests!
Can't Wait to Return
Perfect. Already planning my return... only next time, for longer.
