About this property

Long Lake Waterfront Home

Loon Lodge is a beautiful lakefront home on Long Lake. It is very private, located at the end of a winding road in the woods, but just fifteen minutes from the bustle of Traverse City. It is perfect for families and couples looking to get away and relax.

The house is directly on Long Lake, one of Northern Michigan's most popular lakes for fishing, swimming and boating. The house has a private dock and a large private deck looking over the water.

Loon Lodge is very secluded; the nearest neighbor is more than one hundred yards away, hidden by the trees. The property has more than 200 feet on the water. Most rental properties are bunched together. Loon Lodge is completely different - it is a private, secluded house in the woods.

The house features two bedrooms and two bathrooms. There are two queen beds and two single beds. The living room is large and spacious, with a cathedral ceiling. The eat-in kitchen is fully equipped. The house has hardwood floors throughout. Outside there is a new Weber gas grill and fire pit.

There is a canoe for your use, along with paddles and life jackets. You can also bring a boat; we provide a mooring and there is a public boat launch across the lake. There are public tennis courts within walking distance. There are also islands in the lake that you can explore, many with lovely beaches.

The area has much to offer, especially in the summer. The house is fifteen minutes from Traverse City, a lively and pretty town with shopping and festivals. Interlochen Music Camp, the Sleeping Bear Dunes, the Platte River, and Michigan's finest wine country are all close by.

Please note that bookings run Saturday to Saturday in the summer. Early and late season booking start on Saturday as well.

Absolutely the best!
We booked the cabin for the week while my daughter was at Interlochen camp and were beyond impressed with the location and charm of the place! It is truly tucked away on a winding path through the woods and the views from the dock are spectacular. It is a traditional cabin feel but fully stocked with all of the cooking utensils and bedding you need. I will say the beds are not the most comfortable, but after the first night we didn't even care! Hiking the grounds, swimming, canoeing, cooking meals and making a fire made for long relaxing days. I was worried that with no A/C the high summer temps would be uncomfortable, but the shade and breeze from the lake made it no issue at all. We'll definitely be back!!

Fall getaway
We were looking for a place to get away and do some wine touring in Michigan. The view, the layout and the quietness sold us on this property. The directions to the house were very helpful in finding the house - big thank you to Tim for that! The house was very welcoming, clean, plenty of kitchen utensils/cookware and the bedrooms & bathrooms were a nice size. The tool closet was great - totally reminding us of something our grandfathers would have. We didn't need to use anything, but it was fun to see what was in there. If we plan another trip to Traverse City, we would stay here again.

Long Lake Visit
The house was very clean. There was a good amount of general supplies; spices, soap, kitchen utensils, which is always an unknown with rentals. It was a good place for our dogs to run around with direct water access. Thank you!

We very much enjoyed our stay at Loon Lodge. Everything met our expectations with the exception of the beds. Unfortunately, they were terribly uncomfortable. Aside from that, thank you for making your little piece of heaven available! Jon & Debbie

Amazing home - quiet, secluded and relaxing!
My wife and I came to Traverse city to relax and enjoy some sightseeing. After arriving at Loon Lodge, all that changed. We literally left only once all week. The house itself exudes charm, history and character. Yes, it’s an older home, but still owned by the original family, it is well-maintained and completely clean. We spent our days relaxing on the boat house patio, enjoying warm fires and beautiful views. We brought our boat, and the fishing was excellent as well. Our host Tim was available, responsive and informative, we certainly appreciated his dedication to our comfort. Being pet friendly as well, our 2 pups absolutely loved it. Daily walks through the woods and paths, and occasional jumps in the lake. My wife and I agree that this was absolutely one of the best vacations we’re ever had. Believe me, we WILL be back.

We really enjoyed our stay at the Loon Lodge. Really appreciated the guide to the area that the owners gave us prior to our stay. We loved walking our dog around the recreation area that was only a mile away from the cabin. We would definitely come again. Thanks again Tim

Lakeside Cabin
My wife, daughter, son-in-law and I stayed at Loon Lodge on beautiful Long Lake. We brought our 10 month old golden doodle and she is in withdrawal now that we are home. She learned to swim off the dock and now seems bored that she can't run out to the lake. Very nice cabin with great layout and everything you need. Great boat house deck with fire ring to watch beautiful sunsets. Excellent location to explore western michigan from. Great trip!

Such peace!
The property is so peaceful on the lake with no close by neighbors. My daughter & I brought our sewing machines and used rainy time to make quilts (me) and cosplay costumes (her). There was plenty of room at the dining room table and space to eat in the breakfast room and out on the patio. I cooked nearly all meals and the stove functioned well. Remember to bring mosquito repellent, it’s been a wet summer! We loved our stay!

Great location with beautiful views!
We stayed a week at Loon Lodge! The location is very centrally located and was easy for us to get to traverse city and Sleeping Bear dunes. We really enjoyed the deck overlooking the lake and made s’mores every night. The cabin is a bit rustic, but was very clean when we arrived. There is no dishwasher, which I guess is to be expected at a cabin like this. Michigan is very beautiful to explore and this made for a good home base. Don’t forget to check out Moomers. We also enjoyed the little market across the street from Moomers and stocked up on all the cherry products. Don’t miss the cherry salsa and homemade local tortilla chips - SO good!

Great Trip
The house is beautiful and clean. The isolated cabin in the woods perfectly fit our vibe without pulling us too far from the city. Only a half hour from Sleeping Bear Dunes and really close to Moomer's for ice cream and the Timbers Trail Rec Area is a great close hike.

Loon Lodge Get Away
As we pulled up to Loon Lodge ( our host provided us with excellent directions!), we were greeted by a pair of loons on beautiful Long Lake. The cottage was very clean and the host provided everything we needed to enjoy our stay, including wood for a fire on the deck overlooking the lake, and canoes and life jackets to venture out on the lake. Excellent location: plenty of trails to hike nearby, Sleeping Bear Dune National Park only 30 minutes away, shopping, fishing. Star gazing at night was tremendous!

Classic lake life
Loon Lodge was a wonderful home base for our week up north. We have stayed on Long Lake for the past six years but this was our first time at Loon Lodge. We like our vacations to be a blend of lake time and day adventures and Loon Lodge ably served both goals. Being on the water is easy: you walk down a flight of concrete stairs to the dock. To your left, there is the door to the boathouse and a concrete ramp. As warned, we avoided walking on the slippery ramp! Just beyond, however, is a narrow strip of beach leading into shallows perfect for cooling off and playing track ball. Straight out from the stairs, he wooden dock is extra-long which was great for nighttime stargazing, views of the lake and morning yoga. Our group took several kayak and SUP trips across the lake to Brush Island (we brought the kayaks and had the SUPs delivered). We had our morning coffee on the deck above the boathouse and enjoyed a few s'more fires in the firepit. The house was very clean, open and airy. We easily fit our four young adults and two adults. We played many hands of euchre at the long wooden table in the living room. We had plenty of everything: kitchenware, towels, bedding, etc. although we did bring some extra towels and blankets just in case. From Loon Lodge, it's easy to get to food and grocery favorites like Long Lake Grocery (try the breakfast pizza!), Gallagher's Farm (best blueberry pie and meats) and Moomer's ice cream. We also day-tripped to TC, Sleeping Bear Dunes, Glen Arbor and Elk Rapids. The owner, Tim, is very responsive. He returned emails promptly. He provided us with detailed written info about using the Lodge as well as a personal guide to enjoying the area (activities, dining, etc.) a week or so before our trip. It is a winding trip through the woods to get down to the cabin but there were Loon Lodge signs that helped. This is a quiet end of the lake and while we could see peeks of other cabins in our cove, they were mostly obscured by trees. We had an excellent stay.

About the host

Host profile image
My grandparents purchased this land on Long Lake almost 100 years ago, and the property is still owned by the family. We also own the nearby woods, so we are able to protect the area. It is a unique and special retreat.

We rent the property a few weeks each year to help cover the rather large Michigan property tax bills!

Why they chose this property

My grandmother's family lived in Chicago and would take the train up to Traverse City. They loved the quiet of Long Lake. We do, too.

What makes this property unique

Our home has three very special features.

First, it is right on Long Lake, a spectacular northern Michigan lake. The water is clear and the sunsets are beautiful. Loons nest on the lake, and you can often hear their haunting calls. The lake is great for swimming and boating.

Second, the house is very private. It is situated in the deep woods on a huge lot with lots of lakefront.

Third, the house is near Traverse City, so while it feels like you are really away from it all in the deep Michigan woods, you can get to a store quickly if you run out of flour or want to go to a movie on a rainy day.
