Wellfleet House Rental Photos and Description

3 Bedrooms sleeps 8, 2 Baths

Post and Beam home with a bay view from the gated south facing deck. Full kitchen with a gas range, microwave, coffee maker, blender, Frig, dishwasher, and all utensils. There are two private bay beaches that are less than 1/2 mile walk on sandy roads. The ocean beaches and fresh water ponds are about two miles East. There is easy access to the bike path which leads from S. Wellfleet up Cape to Brewster and Provincetown.Ptown is 20 miles North. Lt. Island is ringed by the Audubon Sanctuary and has great walking and back water boating. Located at the house are two bikes(one with a child's seat), a canoe, windsurfer, and surf board. The bedrooms on the main level have a queen and a double bed, while the loft has a king bed and double futon. The basement has a full laundry. Pets are allowed except on the town beaches and Audubon trails. Cable TV and internet access with direct and wireless connections.

Activities: The house is located in the center of Lt. Island. It has a distant bay view with quiet sandy roads leading to two private beaches 1/2 mile in either direction from the house. There are no street lights on the island, so it is wonderful for star gazing. The bike rail trail is located 1.5 miles away on Rt. 6, and there are two bikes at the house. There is a canoe, windsurfer, and sunfish at the house but one would need a car rack, or truck to take them to either of the beaches.

Lt. Island is an exclusive location due to the causeway that leads onto the island. When tides are greater than 9.5 feet, the road will go under water for varying times depending upon the size of the tide. At high tides, the marshes to the north, east and south are wonderful for boating, bird watching, and fishing. Fishing for striped bass, blue fish and boating are best at the private north beach, while sunbathing and swimming are best at the private south beach.

Amenities: There is a Stereo system, TV, CD player, and Cassette player. Please bring extra books and movies to complement the selection already present. There is cable to the house and it supplies direct and wireless internet access and TV reception.

About Foster Palmer

I was born and raised in the Adirondacks of upper New York state. After graduating from Cornell Veterinary College, I practiced in Wyo, NY, VT, SC, Tortola, and Ma. I also taught at Delhi College and Newberry SC in their preveterinary programs.

Foster Palmer purchased this house in 1985

Why Foster Palmer chose Cape Cod

I was practicing in Vt from 1974 to 1993 and needed a place to relax away from phones, TV, and work. My home now has a phone, cable, TV, and internet so the days/weeks of playing cards and just walking the beaches are diminished but not gone.

What makes this house unique

Lt Island is considered exclusive now and is ringed by Audubon. The beaches on the island are private and one can walk pets there if they are leashed, even during the peak summer season. The piping plovers and diamond back terrapins nest on the island so animals must be leashed during the summer nesting season.

Palmers On Lieutenant Island

  • 4 of 5

This timber-framed house is nestled in the island's scrub pine and is a rare discovery for those disenchanted with the commercialism and traffic which has come to characterize many parts of the Cape. Here is a place of solitude governed only by the weather and the tides. In the morning you can smell the salt air and walk down a dirt lane to the beach; mid-day you can swim at the causeway and in the evening you can listen to the breeze in the pines and hear a distant fog horn. And the sunsets from the beach are the most beautiful I've ever seen. The house features an open living room with a tall truss-supported ceiling and sliding glass doors to promote natural air circulation, two bedrooms with beamed ceilings and a sleeping loft under the roof with large opening skylights. Several antique stained glass windows and a small pipe organ lend character to this comfortable and airy retreat. There is an outdoor deck with both shade and sun for relaxing, reading and barbequing, two bathrooms with showers and an outdoor shower to wash off beach sand. The house is convenient to Rt. 6 and Marconi Beach and it is a short drive to Provincetown on rainy days. We look forward every year to our return!

Owner's Response: I'm so pleased that you enjoy the peace and solitude that has been the hallmark of my island home. Even at night, the stars are breath taking due to the lack of light polution. One can see the northern lights on a cloudless night. Thank you for becoming a long time friend.

Car: recommended

The house is located on Lt. Island in South Wellfleet, Massachusetts. Provincetown and Truro are just North from the house, while Flea Markets and Orleans are located to the South. Whale watching is best from Provincetown, while the biking is best from Wellfleet going South. The Island is located on the bay side and surrounded by the Audubon Sanctuary. There is wonderful boating around the island at high tide.

Other Activities: Canoeing and kayaking.
