About LIz Wiederhold
Paul and Liz Wiederhold moved to 'the river' in 2006 to follow their dreams. Their incredible new riverfront location begged to be shared... and 'Riverside Escapes' was born. More than vacation rentals, the future of Riverside Escapes will include riverfront weddings, family reunions, corporate retreats, and more. The Wiederholds were married on the property's island and live onsite where they provide personal service for their guests. The property is full of animals; Diamond - our very friendly campus mascot dog, a flock of very pampered free range chickens, a pair of mallard ducks who have taken up voluntary residency, and lots of other birds and critters. Paul owns a high end roofing company specializing in slate, tile, copper and metal roofs, and copper gutters. When not working, Paul loves to fish, kayak and generally enjoy the river. Liz enjoys hostessing and working 'hands on' at Riverside Escapes including fixing and building things, as well as designing, decorating, sewing and landscaping.

Why LIz Wiederhold chose Alexander
The French Broad River is a spectacular river meandering through a spectacular town. 'Broad' is a descriptive name for this large, majestic river which is largely unspoiled by development. Yet, just down river, Asheville offers all of the excitement, arts, fine dining, nightlife, and eclectic culture that anyone could seek. The Blue Ridge Parkway, Appalachian Trail and so many other natural gifts are just a short drive away. Madison County offers some of the beautiful whitewater rafting locations, unspoiled mountain land, and even snow skiing in Wolf Laurel. Our location is ideally located just north of Asheville and south of Madison County. It is truly the best of both worlds.
What makes this Cabin unique
Riverside Escapes offers the only island vacation rental in the area and one of just a few riverfront homes. Guests are encouraged to walk the swinging bridge, fish from the shores, sit by the riverside campfire, and generally immerse themselves in the incredible natural beauty of the property. There is something for everyone here. For the more adventurous type, our island cabin offers the feel of remote camping, but none of the hassles. For those seeking more luxury, our mainland cabin has all the comforts of home and more with a hot tub, custom tile showers, coffee bar, limited satellite based wireless internet access, and more.

The week was both exciting and relaxing
Our week at Riverside Escapes was wonderful! We arrived mid-afternoon and were greeted by Liz with a thorough tour of the cabin and explanation of the property. After that, she was close by but out of sight. We spent the first night exploring the island, floating in the rafts, fishing, and resting in the hot tub. The next two days were spent ziplining and white water rafting - both were very close to the cabin. The rest of the time was spent relaxing and exploring the Blue Ridge Parkway. The cabin was very clean and very well stocked. There were special touches added that made it very welcoming and that you don't get with every rental property. We will definitely stay again in the future and highly recommend this property to others. The only consideration that I would like to add is that you need to make sure that your family is on the same schedule. The floors are a little creaky and could be an issue if you have an early riser or a night owl. This wasn't an issue for our family as we are all night owls and late sleepers but may be something to consider for others. We have no complaints and are looking forward to staying here again!
We had a wonderful stay! Liz was fantastic and saw to it that everything was covered, including what I'd call an intuitive customer service by remembering something I had mentioned weeks before. She went ahead and had some rubber tubes pumped up and waiting for us to drift the river from the neighboring park back to our location. She also gave us a thorough walk-through explanation of everything and then dropped off some new pans for good measure. It was a very relaxing stay --- floating on the provided tubes to the sound of the river; relaxing in one of multiple hammocks; and ending the evening by soaking in the hot tub. A very relaxing stay and much appreciated! Powell, Mary & the Kids
Always a pleasure
We keep coming back. We love this location so much and it’s perfect for our family of 4. Wonderful accommodations and perfect location.
Beautiful location, Great Hosts, Slight Improvements Needed
1. Hosts left many amenities throughout - s’mores kit, coffee kit, toiletries kit. Very thoughtful!
2. Even separate (very large) towel were provided for hot tub
3. The location is gorgeous! This is by far the best Pro!
4. Beds were all very comfortable.
5. There is ample parking
6. There are tons of movies to choose from if you get bored or want to relax.
7. Communication was great
1. It is listed as 3 bedroom. The 3rd bed is right in the master suite - not very romantic and very misleading. We ended up taking the small bedroom downstairs and letting our kids sleep upstairs.
2. I’ll preface this by saying we actually live by a river, in the country so we know all about bugs and critters. But, be prepared for TONS of bugs. Spiders. And bugs that look similar to roaches but fly. Pill bugs. Just tons of bugs.
3. We cooked a lot at the house. Two of the sauté / skillet pans were still dirty (they had been put away with food caked on them), so I had to clean them before I could cook.
4. There’s absolutely no cell service here for AT and T, and even though it lists that you can check email or browse the Internet, we were told on check in that the wife is a realtor and needed all the bandwidth so please don’t use it unless absolutely necessary. Not a big deal, except when it came to looking up directions for hikes or activities you’re pretty much lost until you get closer to town with service. If we had known, I’d have bought a map.
5. The hot tub was incredibly chlorinated. The host stated he didn’t use a lot of chlorine, but we were unable to use it more than once for just a few minutes because the chlorine content was so high.
6. One note in case you are light sleepers, the home is right next to the road. It didn’t bother us, but that isn’t shown in photos either.
Overall, we had a great time, feel it is a good value. The listing should be changed to reflect that it is not three bedroom but two. The area is just beautiful.
Thank you for your feedback. We work exceptionally hard to provide extras and make our guest experience amazing!
We believe you confused our listing - we have always advertised on VRBO, Homeaway and other sites as a 2 bedroom. And, our description clearly explains that the 2nd floor is a large suite with a king and 2 twins.
We believe you may also misunderstand the internet situation. There is nothing but satellite service at Riverside Escapes. The cabin's router has it's own download/upload allowance - which is limited. It does not affect the owner's use of internet. But, it is limited and cannot tolerate heavy downloads of movies, music, updates, streaming, etc. It is just for email and quick searches of google, etc. Ours is a riverfront escape - not equipped for gaming or heavy internet use.
We do apologize that our previous guests apparently put dishes away dirty. We'll double check more carefully between guests in the future.
While the cabin is by Old Marshall Hwy for quick and level access, we do not hear road noise in the cabin. It is a country road with low traffice, and our remodel included heavy insulation for sound.
Again, we thank you for staying with us and hope that your escape was memorable.

What A terrific place! The owners thought of every detail to make us feel welcome the house was exquisite. The island was a treasure. The fireplace was a place for relaxing. Highly recommend this place, will return
This charming river front cabin is only 20 minutes from the heart of downtown Asheville, but feels like a solitary oasis. Came to Asheville for a workshop in the River Arts Dustrict and found this well-appointed retreat a quick 20 minute drive away.
There are two balconies overlooking the river and a riverfront meadow with a pristine hot tub on one balcony. The master suite is the entire second story and you can lie on the bead with a beautiful river view. Every amenity is present including attentive owners and a private island you access by suspension bridge. Can’t wait to return!
