Overview

About the property

Cozy studio with 2 double beds, full Bath, sleeps up to 4

Our old Railroad Bunkhouse (circa 1870s) in historic Truckee, is still a work in progress. But downstairs is the completed Huddle-Up studio; quaint and cozy. There are two double beds; a Murphy bed and the Huddle Up loft (named by our granddaughter), both with fresh linens, and down comforters. The full bathroom has an antique footed tub with shower, clean towels and accessories.

The kitchenette is perfect for simple fare. A coffee pot, microwave, toaster oven and refrigerator (no stove) compliment this galley-type kitchen. TV, DVD/VCR, WiFi. Parking and snow removal provided.

The location is excellent for those who are looking to enjoy the shops, art studios, wine tasting and restaurants in historic downtown Truckee. We are located in the old Brickelltown neighborhood, across from the railroad, just a 3-minute walk to Commercial Row and the AMTRAK station. Nordic and downhill ski resorts including Squaw Valley, Alpine Meadows, Northstar, Tahoe Donner, Donner Ski Ranch, Boreal and Sugar Bowl are a short drive. Donner Lake, the Truckee River, Lake Tahoe and the Tahoe National Forest offer abundant recreation alternatives in close proximity. The Legacy Trail along the Truckee River, for walkers, runners and bicyclists, is a short distance from the front door.

We have lived here for over 30 years, on site, upstairs. If you have any questions please ask us. We look forward to your inquiries. Val and Buff/ Railroad Bunkhouse/The Huddle Up

About Val Kelly and Buff Cano

Val works in health care, Buffalo is a carpenter, designer and great cook. We've lived in this house over 35 years, raised our children and grandchildren here and are lucky to have a very large extended family. We like meeting people, like to travel when we can, and hope to one day finish 'this old house'. Buff grew up in Southern California but found Truckee to be more his style after a trip to the Sierra. Val, originally from Michigan, lived in New Mexico before moving to Truckee.

Val Kelly and Buff Cano purchased this studio in 1985

Why Val Kelly and Buff Cano chose Downtown

Living in downtown Truckee has been wonderful. The heart of the town, the history and the community all combine to make this a great place to call home. Winter and Spring weather can be hard to manage with heavy snow, chilling temps and long storms, but the sun shines most of the time. Summer and Fall takes hikers, bikers and stargazers to amazing places.

What makes this studio unique

We can walk anywhere we need to be. The town has grown around us but we still feel the comfort of a tight-knit, warm community. There are interesting and talented people all around, as you will see. Truckee is unique in many ways and there are still areas unexplored.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Easy downtown access, very comfortable. We'll be returning.

Stellar

So have you ever discovered something and you don't want to tell anyone about it because then it will be unaccessible? That's the Huddle Up. If not Saint Patrick's Day I would not reveal this much 🇨?🇮?🍀?

Very nice owners; my daughter loves it

  • 5 of 5

The owners are very considerate, available and helpful. The place is small, but that may be the reason why my daughter likes it so much -- perfect size for the two of us. Clean, well maintained and stocked. Just keep in mind -- there is no stove, so do not plan to cook anything fancy. But the location is great -- you can walk to any place in downtown Truckee, so if you are planning to dine out, this place is perfect for you. The rail tracks are very near, so, if you are a light sleeper, you may need to use earplugs. Was not an issue for us. We loved it and will stay here again, if the place is available.

Owner's Response: Thanks for visiting! Yes, the trains can be loud and are an ever present reminder of Truckee's unique history. Earplugs are a must for visitors and we keep a large supply. Hope your family will stay again, every season here presents a new adventure. Val and Buff

Loved our stay in this cozy studio! Perfect location!

  • 5 of 5

Stayed 2 nights with our family of 4 adults. Great location as a home base for local adventures to Tahoe and Donner Lake or just walking down the street to the restaurants and shops of Truckee. We had everything we needed from warm blankets, plenty of towels, complimentary toiletries if we needed them and an excellent movie selection. The train and street noise was not very noticeable but earplugs were provided if needed. My only suggesting would be bring slippers as the floors are concrete but covered with floor rugs in most places. Thank you for the great stay!

Excellent!!

What a treat to stay at "the Huddle". !! Val and Buffalo could not have been more helpful and caring (including calling me the night before to warn us of impending weather). The place is cute and cozy and could not be in a better location. Can it give six stars?!

This is the cutest of units located in a historical landmark building at the west end of Old Town Truckee. The interior of this apartment is perfect and has everything you could want. The unit is very European feeling with its smart and efficient use of space, only this unit is much better thought out than most of its Euro cousins. There was plenty of room for us on a week long summer stay. Had we been skiing, we probably would have left our ski's on the car which I do anyway. {We found ourselves so delighted that we are already planning some wintertime stays here.)

The hosts are the sweetest couple that made our stay all the more memorable. We just fell in love with these folks. During our stay, the front exterior of the old manor house was being restored lovingly by one of the two hosts himself... but don't worry about noise because he still drives his capable wife to work at 10:00 am and only begins to putter after setting her free at work. We were envious of the lifestyle of a semi-retired cabinet maker restoring such a piece of history. Did I mention that we absolutely fell in love with our hosts? Staying here is like social time travel to a slower more gentile era. The real historical passenger train station is but a block away and people still use it... for train travel!

The location! Wow. This is right on the west end of Old Town Truckee. We walked daily to different coffee shops, breakfast places, friendly bars, and fancy dinner restaurants. When we returned from each day's outdoor adventure, there was no reason to move the car ever again. Incidentally, the parking is just 2.5 steps from the front door on a red brick parking pad. Convenient to say the least.

In north Tahoe you can spend lots more to stay in any level of luxury but you sure don't need to do that. Just stay here and BE a part of the community that others just visit.
