Coal Train House!!!!

Bedrooms 3
Half Baths1
Property type house
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms, 2.5 Baths, (Sleeps 6)

This spectacular home on the 'right' side of the tracks was custom built and completed in 2009 by owner Doug Sigler. Doug's love of woodworking and the skill developed by a lifetime of devotion to his craft are clearly evident in every room: cherry kitchen, master closet and dressing area, ash and bamboo floors, tambour vanity doors. These handcrafted details shine as brightly as the mountain views.

Cantilevered porches and a stone patio overlook the nearby Toe River a short distance from the train tracks. Deer will often come by to drink from the river and it's not uncommon to find wild turkeys gathering on the lawn. Trains pass by frequently. And yes, you can feed the fish from the dock on the pond (We'll show you where we stash the fish food.)

A brief verbal tour:

As you walk into the front door of Coal Train House, you'll find yourself in the Great Room, a large open living and dining space with a wonderfully functional kitchen to the right. A wide hall to the left includes the coat closet, a half bath and stairway to the lower level.

At then end of the hall is the master suite with a queen size handcrafted bed. There's a comfortable sitting area for reading and relaxing as well as a dressing room with custom cherry closets and vanity. A full bath with jacuzzi tub, walk-in shower and vanity with two handmade sinks completes the suite.

Sliding glass doors open to the stone patio and lawn on the lower level which offers two spacious guest rooms and full bath with shower. One room features a custom-built queen size-bed and walk-in closet; the other has two twin beds and a walnut game/card table designed by Doug.

Coal Train House is close to nature but far from the beaten track. It makes a great getaway for one or two couples. Children are welcome but supervision is necessary with both a deep pond and an active RR track in the back yard.

Penland School is 10-15 minutes from the house and supermarkets are about 20 minutes away.

Amazing house, Secluded yet Close, Great Views, Best Amenities Ever

  • 5 of 5

Must echo other reviewers in agreeing you just can't go wrong staying at Coal Train House! Immaculately clean; beautiful, unique furnishings and art; best equipped house we've ever rented (and we've rented a lot). Add the gorgeous view, pond, excitement of the daily train, beautiful (cool and clean) river and proximity to town, Penland School and other activities--the perfect vacation spot. Having a host actually meet you, and also the fact they live fairly close--huge plus. No one wants to show up at a rental, ready to relax, and not be able to get in, find the key, punch in a non-working code, or find essential equipment not working. K met us, explained the A/C thermostat, pointed out essential features, and answered our questions. Another plus is the fact that every need or want has been considered in this house--from the grill on the porch, to the very well-equipped kitchen (all basics, including oil, spices, mayo, tea, coffee, syrup, tons of plates, glasses, utensils, napkins, cutting board, toaster, blender--and much, much more that I can't recall). Linens and bedding are comfy and attractive, mattresses great, towels plush. No second hand "vacation home" items here, at all!!! Even the cookware is high end, as is everything else in this home. Thoughtful touches abound, including games, books, music, binoculars, cooler--even breakfast basics upon arrival (pastries, orange juice, coffee, creamer, fridge full of drinks). I can't think of a single thing that we could have possibly needed or wanted. So many extras...As for the home itself--perfect place for two small families or one extended, with multiple porches/balconies and lots of outdoor space to "get away," plus bedrooms on two floors and plenty of bathrooms. Outdoors you can bird watch, gaze at the view of the river and hills, hang out at the pond (hammock and pier down there--feed the fish, read, nap), or walk the railroad tracks about a 1/8 mile upriver to access a small sandy area for river play. Road into property is a smidge steep in places, but excellent condition on our visit, with lots of gravel, no "washboard" areas. As others mentioned, there is one small house on the same property, but it is not close and plenty of vegetation between the two homes (and apparently the home is rarely occupied). You would never know it is there, and you feel quite secluded, especially as the sound of the river is constantly in the background. No mosquitoes at all, despite the pond. Dog paradise, too!

Simply spectacular!

  • 5 of 5

This house could be a destination in itself! I just can't say enough about this exquisite property and its hosts, Kathie and Doug, whose attention to every detail and gracious hospitality assure their guests will want to return and stay longer next time. Doug is a master artist-craftsman who not only built this house, but whose woodwork has elevated it to a work of art; Kathie's special touches are apparent in every room. Everything in the house worked, was immaculately clean and comfortable -- every possible need, provided for. The views are lovely and the nightly light show (thank you fireflies) lent a special magic to the place. The sounds of the river below, the music of morning songbirds and the occasional toot of the coal train provided the soundscape for what was a perfectly enjoyable and memorable vacation stay. Rent this one with complete confidence!

Gorgeous modern cabin on beautiful lot

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed in the Coal Train House for our Thanksgiving break. We absolutely loved everything about it. The entire house is very clean and modern- it looks like it was just finished being built yesterday! The lot is fantastic with a huge yard for our dog to run around in and the amazing river behind it. Doug & Kathie are excellent hosts and supply literally everything you could possibly need for your stay! We will definitely be back!

My husband and I were here for our second visit. We spent over two weeks and loved it as much as the first time. The house is beautiful and Kathie and Doug are both very attentive and caring. We had a lot of rain during our stay but it did not dampen our enthusiasm for the lovely home and area. We hope to be back again.

Staying in the Coal Train House is like living in a work of art. Doug's woodworking and craftsmanship are truly fabulous. He and Kathie treat you more like guests than renters. They were both so gracious and welcoming and the house lacked for nothing.

All I can do is concur with the other reviews. Our dog was able to run free and Beau even left tennis balls for her. This is a special spot. I hope to return.

If you like the photos and reviews, the Coal Train house is even better in person!!!

First I would like to thank Doug and Kathy for being so awesome. We were coming to the area for work instead of vacation (which ended up being a little bit of both). Our schedule was not set in stone unlike vacationers so thank you Doug and Kathy with working with us on the schedule. The property is just amazing to look out and see the pond and the Toe River. One of the contractors stayed with us a couple of nights he is an avid fly fisherman and thoroughly enjoyed being out on the river. My 3 year old caught the most fish with his Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle pole in the pond. Everyday we would see deer, turkey and would watch Osprey catch fish in the river as well. The trains came by sporadically my son absolutely loved them the engineers only honked if we were waving to them. As far as closest grocery stores about a nice 15 minute drive into town. Also for the travelers that cannot get away from the internet and need phone service since we travel we have a wifi jetpack for our internet, it worked better at the Coal Train house than at our home just outside of Atlanta and our phone service was perfect. If you need a little more room or the Coal Train house is too big they are building a one bedroom cabin on the next hill over that should be ready anytime. Our two dogs never once barked at the train. We all enjoyed our stay so much. We would come back and highly recommend.
