Come to the Big Island, unpack your bags in The Kona House au nd begin the perfect tropical get away!

The Kona House is in an ideal location: one hundred feet from Magic Sands Beach, a mile and a half to Keauhou Shopping Center and three miles from the heart of old Kona Town. You'll have access to shopping, movies, great restaurants, shave ice, galleries, golfing, snorkeling and diving tours, live entertainment, parks, beaches and harbors . If you are an explorer this is a great starting point for traveling south to the Volcano or north to the majestic Kahala coast and mountainous Waimea town.

The Kona House is a child friendly destination and serves as relaxing family retreat. Warm sunny days keep our pool warm enough for evening dips while you BBQ on the huge, roof top lanai. Or, put your feet up listen to the chirping birds in the old banyan tree and the rhythmic sound of the waves hitting the shore at Magic Sand Beach and order in. If you are really motivated walk the hundred steps to the beach and applaud the sunset. It's a good show and guaranteed daily.

The Kona House is a generous, 3500 square foot double story house. The space is designed to allow privacy and quiet on wrap around decks while providing a large group area for watching TV and playing games. There is also an office with hi speed wireless internet access for those who need to stay in touch with friends or work.

The Kona House has a hidden secret. A one bedroom, completely equipped apartment with a private entrance that is separated from the main house by a hallway. It is the perfect getaway for a couple.

The Kona house has been beautifully landscaped with local plants and is especially proud of it's old Banyan Tree.

thanksgiving trip

  • 3 of 5

We were here for the thanksgiving holiday with all our children. There were 11 of us total. The house size was perfect for the amount of people we had. It was nice to have the pool in the afternoon, when it was too hot for the beach. The kitchen size was great as well. We were able to cook our thanksgiving dinner without incident.

We were disappointed about a couple things. One of the rooms didn't have an air conditioner. It was a downstairs room, and it was very hot and muggy for the 2 people sleeping in it. The refrigerator was a big problem. At one point it was 50degrees. At this point we should have thrown all our meat and dairy out, or risk someone getting sick. We had spent over 400 dollars on food for all of us. The sign to tell us to keep it closed was impossible to follow due to the number of people in and out of it daily. After breakfast alone the temp went up 15 degrees. It is clear the fridge hasn't been cared for in a while. The last item is the beds. Very hard and uncomfortable to sleep on. We actually went to Costco and bought new pillows just to make it comfortable for us.

Overall I would say 3.5 stars. Not sure we would come back to this house, mostly because of the problems listed above.

Owner's Response: Thank you William for the review. The refrigerator situation was very unfortunate. We do have another refrigerator down stairs that we had brought up stairs, hoping to solve the problem. But, I do understand that not having the main refrig working is inconvenient. We were able replace our main kitchen refrigerator with a brand new refrig, so we should never have this problem again! I am happy to refund any money spent of lost groceries. As far as the beds being uncomfortable, this is a first. I will definitely look into that. Aloha Catherine

Fantastic stay!

  • 5 of 5

We had a group of 11 at this wonderful spot and all had a fantastic time. Lots of room and the bedrooms were nice and peaceful for great sleeps. The showers had great pressure and lots of hot water and towels. The house is fully equipped with dozens of pairs of water shoes, snorkelling gear, beach towels, beach chairs....even a large cooler with wheels that we took along to hold our picnic items on our day trips. Washer and dryer were a bonus and worked great.

The beach is really as close as advertised with a path across the street. The pool was hours of fun and just the right temperature to cool off and was a big hit with our group and used daily.

Everyone in our group would highly recommend this spot - it's the best deal in Kona.

It had everything we needed

  • 4 of 5

It had everything we needed. We were in Hawaii for my daughter's wedding and there were eight of us staying at the house. We were excited to have a pool to cool off because we knew it was going to be warm, Hawaii is warm and more humid in the summertime. three of the bedrooms have air conditioning so some of us had it pretty cool for sleeping. The house is provided with a lot of fans freestanding and ceiling which really helped keep the air moving. The kitchen has two refrigerators a great stove and oven at all the utensils and cooking supplies you would need. There are items to go in the pool and we left blowup chair for the next folks to use. There are Sand shoes and floaty things, there's a large deck with the barbecue and a great table we had a barbecue for 15 people and it was perfect. We had one little glitch there was a tropical storm coming so we had to postpone the wedding from Saturday till Monday but Monday was a beautiful day and everything turned out fine. The home is huge and it gives everybody their own private space. Also as it says there are beaches that are really close when you can walk to one that's just down the road a bit where we went snorkeling. I would stay there again. The owners and the property manager are very nice people and if you need anything you just give them a call and they will help you immediately

I would love to give this beautiful home 5 stars but just cannot. This house would have been perfect for our family of 12 but it was so hot during our stay that we couldn't enjoy the house or being in each others company because we basically had to sit in our bedrooms to get out of the heat. Before booking this house I was told by the owner that 4 out of the 5 bedrooms had a/c. Turns out that was not the case and only 3 of the 5 did. Although the abundant vegetation outside the house is beautiful, it badly needs to be cut down to allow some sort of breeze to reach the lanai and upstairs of the house, as this area which holds the kitchen, dining and living area which was almost unbearable at times. Certainly didnt want to cook in the kitchen due to the heat. Had multiple issues with kitchen appliances and eventually we did receive a "loaner" refrigerator that actually kept our cold goods from spoiling again. The dishwasher quit early in our stay and washing dishes for 12 people was a chore in the 90 degree heat, but eventually that was resolved as well. The pool was only serviced once in the 2 weeks stay so we did our best to keep it topped off with water and chlorine in it. The amenities in this house far exceeded our expectations! It had everything and more to enjoy our time! It is truly a beautiful home and close to one of our favorite beaches. The owner and manager were prompt in answering questions and tried to get our issues resolved in a timely manner. The refrigerator needs to be replaced and issues with no airflow upstairs need to be addressed before we would consider staying at this property again. Definitely would not stay during the June or July months.

Owner's Response: Aloha and Thank you so much for the review, we always appriciate your feedback. Yes, this summer has been unusually hot! We do have a/c in three of the bedrooms and will put a 4th protable one in as requested by guests, however due to the extremely high cost of electricity, we only do that upon requests. We do have fans in all the bed rooms and plenty of windows, but cutting back the foliage is a great idea! We have tried not to cut back too much because we do like the privacy that it offers. We did have appliance issues and fixed them as soon as we possibly could, we replaced the dishwasher as soon as the repair man could get one in and brought in a loaner refrigerator. Being on an island can be beautiful but challanging when you want things done quickly! There is an extra refrigerator in the guest area that they could use to avoid food spoiling. We do respond promptly and take care of all of the proplems and hope that everyone has a great time on the Big Island! Thank you Catherine

Wish we were back in Kona

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I love the Hawaiian Islands and have spent time on all of them with the Big Island being our favorite. So renewing our vows after 25 years in this special place only made since. We had a group of 8 family and friends joining us for a small ceremony down in the park next to Magic Sands. This house was a perfect fit for our 9 day stay. The house was well stocked with items to cook, snorkel, and bogie board. The lanai, pool, kitchen, and living area had plenty of space and we never felt crowded. Every evening we would eat out on the lanai and then hang out through the evening talking and staring at the stars.

The short walk to the beach (202 steps) was great for snorkeling and bogie boarding. The location was great for access to easily get to anywhere.

Our little group of 8 were from all corners of the continental US, so each of us dealt with the heat differently. It was nice to have the big fans so we could circulate air in the house. And having the two upstairs bedrooms with AC was great. The downstairs rooms stayed comfortable with fans.

I would recommend this house to friends. It was a nice home away from home. We miss watching the geckos.

PS: Loved having the grill on the lanai but they need to get some wire brushes to clean off the grill.

One of the best values on the Big Island

  • 5 of 5

This was our family's second stay at this beautiful house, our first being 5 years ago. Catherine has done a number of upgrades to the property since our last visit (new furniture, AC in the upstairs bedrooms, updated flooring, etc..). In addition to the huge amount of space (more than we actually needed), this house has close proximity to all the things we wanted to see and is across the road from the ocean.

The house is very well stocked with items that most other houses we have rented don't have (small things you don't think of, but come in very handy). It really was just like being at a friend's home, rather than a rental property.

It is not a surprise that you need to book early to get a spot here. We will continue to make this our Kona home on future trips !
