About this property

Living on the Edge in the Highlands.

Inhabit this private & spacious apartment in a historic duplex with comfort and personable charm. Spend a whole day exploring this walkable and hip neighborhood in the heart of the Highlands (but well away from the noisy bar scene) with easy access to parks, restaurants, cafes, galleries, boutiques, pubs, groceries, movie theatre and I-64. Well-maintained with owner/host on site to ensure attention to detail but give you privacy.
The space
Why stay in a tiny hotel room when you can have the run of this 1300 sq. ft. apartment? Many recent improvements include bathroom remodeling and re-decorating with new furniture and art. The space incorporates original art, oriental rugs, solid wood, handcrafted furniture, and a kitchen stocked with essentials. Most extra-basic cooking equipment can be available with a little notice. Other amenities include WIFI, Netflix, a large flat panel TV, HDMI cord upon request, comfy recliner, a large master bedroom w/walk-in closet, cal king bed with quality linens & bluetooth clock radio with USB, bluetooth speaker, sitting area on front porch, outdoor dining with gas grill in fenced yard, and washer and dryer in basement. Close the pocket doors in the dining room for a work-from-home situation with a desk, chair, and bluetooth printer. The front yard is a pollinator habitat/flower garden. The backyard has been lovingly developed to be a sustainable urban farm with a tea garden, vegetable beds and mini-orchard. THIS UNIT IS CURRENTLY HYPO-ALLERGENIC. THERE ARE NO DESIGNATED SMOKING AREAS OUTSIDE.
Guest access
This is a complete and private apartment with two entrances. The front door opens onto the porch, which I reserve for guests but I frequent the backyard, where I may be found working in the garden. I'm very proud of THE OASIS and happily give tours to anyone with an interest or investigate it on your own. The backyard includes a gas grill and patio table with umbrella. Guests are welcome to use the outdoor dining space. You might even be offered freshly harvested vegetables, depending on what's available. Simply let me know of your plans, and I will happily clear out of the area.
Other things to note
Garage space is optional with advanced notice but it is very small. It's only possible to park smaller vehicles there. (I drive a smaller four-door sedan and getting in and out off the alley takes careful navigation.) Former guests have utilized the garage parking while others had no issue parking on the street. Street parking is only a challenge on weekend evenings during peak hours as restaurants are so near.

Cleaning is optional for longer stays.

About the host

Host profile image
Having traveled in every cardinal direction outside the U.S., I am familiar with the excitement of exploring new places. My travels include living in Vietnam before the post-war economic embargo was lifted, so I am on the adventurous side. As a self-proclaimed foodie and avid music lover, my advice on where to go here is impeccable. My passions include urban farming and a style of gardening that promotes pollinators and wildlife. Additionally, I am very fond of my historic neighborhood of the last 20+ years, in a city I grew up in. I love to show it off and lead visitors off the mainstream path. My attention to detail and outgoing nature help me keep my guests happy.

Why they chose this property

I fell in love with this antique duplex in this historic neighborhood and stewarding it is a labor of love. It is so convenient to everything that it's possible to not need a car for daily life. With so much commerce in walking distance, also being on the edge of a wooded 400 acre park makes it ideal.

What makes this property unique

Despite being near a commercial corridor, the small yard gets visited by many birds and there's a sense of peacefulness so that you don't have a sense of being so close to hustle and bustle most of the time. Thant's why I call the yard, The Oasis.
