About Grant Castle

Owners on property in main house on the 3 acre estate. We live here about half of the year. Our son is grown and on his own, so it is very quiet here.

Grant Castle purchased this cottage in 1998

Why Grant Castle chose Mount Desert Island

Our family has vacationed and lived in the area for generations, so it was preordained that we would end up somewhere nearby. When we had a chance to buy this place we jumped on it.

What makes this cottage unique

We found this property 20 years ago abandoned because of the time and expense it takes to keep an oceanfront property up to date. It took us 18 years to get it right, but now it is a truly first class environment.

Fantastic Fall Escape!

  • 5 of 5

We had such a wonderful week on Mt. Desert Island using this wonderful cottage for our base. It was so fun to explore all the places on MDI and then return to this peaceful, beautifully landscaped setting and well furnished, clean and designed cottage. We enjoyed being on the quiet side of MDI even though we had to drive to our activities for the day. If there wasn’t so much to do on the island we would have been content to just sit and enjoy the property. We got up to watch the sun rise a couple of mornings from the sea wall just steps away from the cottage...totally worth getting up for! Enjoyed hearing the lobster boats going out to their traps every morning, the sounds of the ocean and seeing the deer eat apples off the tree right by the cottage!. If you are looking for a peaceful escape to recharge, this is the place! Becky and Grant are so welcoming and great hosts. We took their recommendations and went to the Common Good in SW Harbor for delicious popovers while supporting a great cause, and to Thurstons in Bernard twice! We also enjoyed the Atlantic Brewing Company in TownHall - great blueberry ale. It was fun to cook in the well stocked cottage kitchen too- we even bought lobster and cooked it ourselves! This was the perfect setting to make our dream Maine vacation come true! We’d come back every year if we could.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the great review. We are adding a heating unit in the bedroom to take off the occasional evening chill. We took all the remaining apples (over 100) to Common Good so they could make great tasting things for a great cause. Come back!

Fantastic Cottage Location

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I had the privilege of spending a week at this amazing cottage. If you are looking for a quiet, beautiful place to vacation, look no further. "Stone Beach" is perfect for two people. Grant and Becky could not have been nicer hosts. They were very informative about where to eat and what to do while visiting Mount Desert Island. Our favorite restaurant was Thurston's in Bernard. The granite bathroom is exceptionally nice. The king bed was very comfortable. We really enjoyed watching the deer in the yard every morning while eating breakfast and walking the seawall. We highly recommend staying here!

Exceeds Expectations!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I have had the pleasure of staying at quite a few wonderful places from Portland to Lubec. Seawall Cottage at Stone Beach is truly a gem! The location is spectacular with the overall property being serene, offering great views and the pictures of the grounds do not do justice for the beauty this place offers.

It's no wonder the reviews are so high, the 5 stars are deserved. My wife and I will definitely plan a return trip to this wonderful spot on Mount Desert Island.

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for staying with us. As the first guests of the the season, you were troupers to live through the water heater's failure with great tolerance and style. Please come back and join our regulars!

Special vacation spot

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is perfect for a single person or a couple, is fully equipped, clean and comfortable. Great views of the ocean and Duck Island and Little Duck Island. Quiet, except for the sound of the ocean, birds, and the occasional lobster boat. Good restaurants within a very short drive; Red Sky was particularly excellent. The owners are very attentive, responsive and pleasant. Special place.
